Trade Deadline Summary - Let's Just Play Some Damn Hockey Already
Darryl Sutter can't help himself. He may not be as loud and self-promoting as Brian Burke but he can't let a trade deadline go by without thrusting himself into the spotlight. He has once again proven himself unpopular with the readers of this site for the continued re-making of the Flames. I'm on record as being more of a fan of Daz than most and even I don't see any good news from today's moves.
And yet...I don't really see bad news either. In fact, I see no news. I'm trying hard to be outraged, or excited, or interested in the moves that Sutter made today and the truth of the matter is, I don't really care. The trades before the Olympics mattered - they reshaped the team, for good and for bad, and changed the look of the roster (in concert with the contract extensions) for the next few years. The impact of those trades on the rest of this year are measurable.
But today? Let's take them one by one.
Curtis McElhinney for Vesa Toskala. A bad backup that we're tired of watching in Calgary for a bad backup that other teams were tired of watching. Neither one can replace Miikka Kiprusoff and the Flames are screwed if they have to. Neither one will play more than two games the next two months. Toskala was once considered good. That's about the sum result of that trade. Moving on...
Dustin Boyd for a 4th rounder. Don't like this, again I'm a huge Boyd fan and always have been. And yet...I realize I'm a fan because he's always been a Flame, and because he has a good back story with the Canadian junior team and I've always liked the Moose Jaw Warriors. I really don't know if he was worth more around the league than a 4th round pick and neither does anyone else in the outsider's world. And in the Flames current setup, a 4th round pick is worth more than Boyd was. We can argue that he was handled poorly, but it's been four years and the ship has sailed.
Steve Staios for Aaron Johnson and a 3rd. The complaints about this trade are that he is a 3rd pairing D with a big contract. Is he better or worse than Pardy right now? I don't know. Was he better than Johnson? Probably. Either way, a pointless move that has little impact. Trying to project the impact into the summer, though, feels like a fool's game. Sutter always seems to be able to deal with contracts that he doesn't like, which would be a skill if he wasn't responsible for causing his own problems in the first place.
In summary, not a good day for the Flames but not bad enough to cause the wailing that has accompanied the trade deadline threads, in my opinion. Let's just play some hockey, already! Let's make the playoffs, let's give ourselves reason to live and die for a few more weeks, let's enjoy the collective experience and leave the summer for the summer.

In truth, I’m finding the comically exaggerated reaction to the trades – everywhere – so entertaining that I also can cardly find the will to be upset. You can count me in the group of Sutter apologists as well – the list of GMs to get their teams into the playoffs each of the last five seasons is very, very short – but I do have to say that, regardless of the names involved, I half want to see Sutter fired exclusively for trading with the Oilers.
Other than that, it has been an entertaining day. Leaf fans trying their damndest to encourage us to become suicidally depressed over acquiring Toskalol, not realizing he is an upgrade! The fourth guy on our FIFTH line for a 4th rounder, while not a good return, has led to much gnashing of teeth.
If nothing else, this team is damned entertaining. For that reason alone, I’d renew my season tickets for next year, even if the very, very strongly hinted outdoor game does not come to pass.
How is Toskala an upgrade? Have you looked at each players stats?
Trust me, as someone that’s watched him play a lot over the past three seasons, he may seem like an upgrade but that’s solely on pedigree. The man is a disaster.

If Steve Staios’ contract ended on June 30, 2010, I’d consider the day a slight success for the overall good of the team. The Boyd deal was sloppy, and I hate the waste of an actual player for a low-odds lottery ticket, but he can likely be replaced in his current role for analogous dollars. Bailing out the Oilers of a self-dug hole on the Staios deal annoys me, though.
Of the whole day, having the Staios contract next year annoys me the most, too. But Vandermeer pissed me off this time last year and Sutter made him disappear somehow. As for bailing out the Oilers, if anything it made a 10 foot deep hole into a 9 foot 6 inch hole (sorry about not using metric, I’ve been down here too long!).
I hear ya, everyones bitching about boyd and its like we traded Gretzky. Just like Lombardi, he wasn’t going anywhere here. Lombardi is playing decently in PHX because he is the number 1 centre on a system team, not because he’s actually that good. Boyd may be alright on Nashville but come on its not like he was going to do much here, every time he had the puck he was molested like a john wayne gacy victim before he could make a solid decision. A poor mans cogliano, with his smurf like stature and cement hands

My thoughts on the trade can be found here:
Boyd for a 4th Rounder:
Everyone is talking about how he didn’t do shit here, which is probably true. My main objection with this trade though was that we traded a 23 year old player for next to nothing. Boyd was a good bet to provide value for his contract in the future, A MUST for a team to be consistently successful the new NHL.
Toskala for Tobasco
I have no complaints about this deal, since we get an EXPIRING contract in return.
Staois come to Calgary
This trade was the worst…. yes, even the Jokinen deal earlier this year. Kent’s one word summary echos my exact thoughts: YUCK. The guy is probably no better then a 6th defenceman at this point, and that 2.7 million cap hit next year will be disastrous in terms of the cap. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see Ian White get flipped for a 3rd this off season if I have learned anything about DAZ recently.
M F that was a shameless plug when you linked to your thoughts.

Another day of being beatdown
not by necessarily bad moves, just seemingly no point moves. Man 04 seems so long ago now, doesn’t it?
I like your positive spin on it.
So what if everyone counts us out and the occasional troll from Vancouver or Edmonton tell us were dumb. All we are is fans, we can complain, we can try and play GM but we’re not. That’s why they call us fans.
Just go out and watch your team tonight, watch them every time they play if you can. With the Goalie we have and the leaders we have anything can happen. This is the first time since the lockout that the Flames are in this position (With the exception of 06-07 where we had 96pts and were a 8th seed) where we’re not sure the identity of this team.
In 03-04 of course the team was gritty but nobody talked about the Flames and when they looked at the Standings and April was here and saw that the Flames we’re in a playoff spot, Everyone was like “How the Hell did they get there”.
I know that it’s stupid to compare this to 03-04, new league and all. But we can’t do anything and all we can do is ride it out tonight, Friday and for the rest of the season. I can say tonight I feel more confident about this team for the first time since November. If you worry about money, contracts, NTC’s, Draft Picks it just gives you a headache no one likes talking about it and nobody likes hearing it that’s the reality here.
The best cure for this is watching the game and cheering on your Calgary Flames.
Shit Happens.
Most of Abbotsford’s defence is in sick bay. They could use the help.

Still very surprising how well they’ve done on this past “Road Trip from Hell” for the Olympics.
Delmore hasn’t had a great career, but he also hasn’t had a bad one maybe this just comes from playing in Detroit where even the 4th Liners are quality. Still he won’t be out of place he know’s how to play and if somebody gets hurt up on the big club defensively, I’d call him up in a heartbeat over Kronwall.
What you see is, What you get.
GO FLAMES GO!!!
Andy Delmore is with his seventh organization after this move. I wouldn’t say he has no chance of ever playing again in the NHL, but I don’t like his odds.

Well that’s glory of having a defensive core that we have. Delmore won’t have to play unless it’s an absolute emergency and he isn’t a liability if it comes to that.
Depth is always a good thing to have.
What you see is, What you get.
GO FLAMES GO!!!
He hasn’t played a NHL game since 05/06. I’m thinking the Flames’ depth isn’t his issue ;-)

Wow I just saw that. Played in Europe but the NHL/AHL is a different type of monster.
But did we see any upswing in Riley Armstrong? Don’t think so, Which is why I’m not really bothered by this deal haha.
What you see is, What you get.
GO FLAMES GO!!!
Oh, it’s a good trade for Abby. Sutter just admitted that Pelech is out for the year and Negrin is done until mid-April. Armstrong is a career AHLer, and so is Delmore. The deal’s just about making sure the farm has enough D.
