Interesting piece on NHL.com (Well... interesting to me since I don't follow NCAA hockey). Far be it for me to recommend copying Brian Burke but considering the lack of Top 60 picks the Flames have over the next few yeas (and overall weakness in the prospect pool at forward) I think Sutter would be a fool to not try and Woo guys like these ala Bozak and Hanson.

I’ve been wondering recently why the Flames don’t ever seem to go after these college guys, or if they do they’ve yet to put forth a convincing enough bid for their services

The Flames under Sutter simply don’t like College players. I think they currently have all of 4 in the system and none of them are worth a damn. They tried to get Chucko to emigrate to the WHL when he decided to go to the NCAA out of the BCHL if I recall correctly.

That might one of the reasons they ignored Schroeder when he fell to them in the last draft.

The Sutters see college players and start grumbling about “danged city folk with their slick haircuts and fancy book-learnin”?

Haha, could be.

Probably more to do with the limited games college players play every year as well as they tend to be long term investments (most stay in school until they’re 22 or so).

Signing an undrafted college player basically carries the same risk as any draft pick though, and unless you’ve got a real good player on your hands, the time it takes for a college player to develop into an NHL ready player is probably about the same as a player drafted out of junior. Some really good players have been college UFA signings, I’d like to see the Flames at least try to land some of these guys. It’s a risk-reward scenario like signing any free agent, but with their limited cap space, drafting history, and the fact that some of their best prospects likely won’t be ready to make the jump any time soon, it’s not a bad idea.

I was just thinking about this watching Maine and Boston in a ECAC Semi-Final.

Maybe it’s about time Daz takes a gander to watch some of the Frozen Four.

GO FLAMES GO!!!
