Yes Virginia, there is playoff hockey on the horizon
While the Flames season appears lost, the Hitmen are beginning their second season on Thursday. Calgary won the Scotty Munro Trophy as regular season champions for the second year in a row, Brandon Kozun won the scoring title with 107 points and Martin Jones was the top goaltender in the league. Eight players scored 20+ goals. Calgary finished the regular season on a 23-2-0-1 run. There really is a team in this city that knows how to win in the clutch.
First round match-up is against the Moose Jaw Warriors.
March 18 @ Calgary
March 20 @ Calgary
March 22 @ Moose Jaw
March 23 @ Moose Jaw
March 25 @ Calgary*
March 27 @ Moose Jaw*
March 29 @ Calgary*
Y'all should check a game out... if only to see what an effective powerplay looks like.
In other news, the Okotoks Oilers won their second round AJHL match-up against the Canmore Eagles, and now face the Fort McMurray Oil Barons for the right to get absolutely destroyed by Spruce Grove in the league championship. SAIT and Concordia are tied 1-1 in their ACAC championship series with games three and five scheduled for SAIT Arena on Friday and Sunday.

And hey- if you don’t want to cheer for some team that’s not named the Flames, the Guildford Flames are set to make the playoffs. I think. I don’t actually understand how their standings work, but they’re fourth over in the British Premiere League or whatever it’s called.
You have to admit though that it would be funny if the Oilers and all of their affiliates were relegated down a level.
There is no way in hell I’m giving up on the Flames yet.
As for the Hitmen, I’m Wheatie fan first then a Hitmen fan but seeing as Brandon has locked up a spot in the Mem Cup.
Would love the Hitmen to be there right with them but Moose Jaw always gives Calgary a run I could see this going 6 again but Calgary looks destined to be the WHL representative in Brandon.
GO FLAMES GO!!!
Moose Jaw doesn’t scare me at all right now. Not only are they fading, their only success against us came against our backup goaltender, not Jones. I’m not about to punch Calgary’s ticket to the Memorial Cup though. The Brandon Wheat Kings are the only team in the league that scares me as a Hitmen fan, and we’ll very likely have to beat the Wheat Kings at some point. But Saskatoon, Tri-City and Vancouver are all teams that can beat us, while Kootenay and Medicine Hat – one of whom will almost certainly be our 2nd round matchup – are more than capable of winning a seven game series.
It is also ironic that the Flames never bid for the Memorial Cup this year primarily because they were worried about arena scheduling conflicts if the Flames had made the third round of the playoffs. Brandon is a fantastic host city for the tournament, but I think we all know that if Calgary wanted it, the CHL would have looked at all those $$ and given it to us.
