Joker's Insight Into Phaneuf's Trade
"The biggest thing is, (former Flame Dion Phaneuf) wasn't accepted by the Calgary fans, even though he was once a Norris Trophy candidate." - Olli Jokinen
Via: Toronto Sun, stolen from: Litter Box Cats
Jokinen seems like a pretty straightforward guy in terms of interviews, so in my opinion this deals a pretty good blow to the whole "lockerroom cancer" theory being tossed around. I still don't think it was the worst trade in the world, since he seemed to be struggling pretty mightily in Calgary regardless, but it's one less factor to consider in the trade (assuming you choose to take Jokinen's words as fact).

I wouldn’t read too much into it if I were you. I imagine we’ll never know the full story unless someone involved writes a tell-all book about it in the near future. No player is going to come out and call someone a “cancer” regardless of whether the person was or wasn’t. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, the compelling hockey reasons for the trade existed regardless of whether Phaneaf was a cancer or a grand ol’ superfella (That being over commitment of $ in the defensemen, probable return, and existence of NTC/NMC in alternatives).
Frankly, I think this is a better team now (I Heart Forward Depth).
They may not directly say something that harsh, but I have heard players and coaches speak relatively candidly about guys they’ve worked with in the past (granted, a lot of those players were retired at the time of interviewing). There’s also a difference between just avoiding saying something and flat-out denying it. I’m not saying Joker’s take is the ultimate statement on the topic, but I still think it deserves to be lent some credence.

And sadly he seems like such a nice guy. Kind of makes me feel bad for all the smack I’ve talked (though I realize that, when you get paid that much money to do something, being a nice guy isn’t quite enough).

UPDATE 3:20 p.m. EST: We dish it out, we can take it. So in the interest of fairness, we yield the floor to Katerina Jokinen (photo here), whose email address we’ve independently verified as being that of Mrs. Olli Jokinen. From the PD inbox, unedited:
I have a pretty thick skin when it comes to articles written about my husband and I’m not very easily disturbed or get upset so I don’t want you to think about what I’m about to say comes from a wrong place but PLEASE consider changing your proffession if writing crap like this is it.
I honestly cannot remember reading a worse article in my life! Really really really BAD writing.
Yikes!
Where is this from?

Jokinen’s POV is understandable. Fans of this team loved Dion from the moment he was drafted through his first three NHL seasons. He took a major step backward last year, and the fans got frustrated. That was when Jokinen arrived. He only knows the frustrated fans, not the ones that worshiped him before.
Yeah, Olli’s got a likeable personality and all but if he really wanted more support he should’ve just played better.
I think the truth is that we’ll cheer for just about any asshole, if they’re effective. I mean I hated Bertuzzi with passion and fire but I wanted him to succeed while he was here.
Maybe it’s the same with VAN fans, you wonder how they can cheer for douches like Luongo but they’re effective and they help the team win.
Or fans of Avery’s teams, they probably swallow their pride because Avery makes their teams better.
Character is important but winning and playing good hockey are too. Iggy’s a great captain and I cheer for him and endorse him even now that he’s declining but my support was built up in no small part through years of potent offense and dominant EV/PP play.

Joker spends three or so days with Avery and starts running his mouth, something he never did in CGY. Interesting to say the least…

I hope Dome drops by here again, because I’ve got a reply:
Nicely put, Dome! I didn’t want to give the impression that I thought the fans were actually what drove Phaneuf out (I personally think it’s just that he’s the overpaid guy who Sutter could get the best return for and was made redundant by Bouwmeester); I was more latching onto the part of the statement by Jokinen that denied the rumours of Phaneuf’s lockerroom cancerishness. I fully grant that my choice to take what the Joker said at face value, as well as ignore the rumour of Phaneuf fighting Iginla, is one that appears mighty naive, but I just don’t think that a little fight would be enough to get a “core” player traded in most circumstances, and that the entire concept of a “lockerroom cancer” in any situation is grossly exaggerated by those who run the rumour mills in order to pique interest. Many people love drama, and if every trade was just assumed to be for practical purposes, interest level would certainly not be as high as it is with all of the speculation that has been occurring.
Nice to be mentioned in an article, though! Feel free to take me on anytime, baby.
I tried to comment on the domebeers site, but signing in using AIM didn’t work, and I quickly became sad and gave up. I may make another attempt tomorrow, but just in case something goes terribly awry, this will be my backup.

Hi Smell!
Two things:
One: naive is a fighting word, so if that pissed you off, ill copt to that.
Two: I still think Im not crazy, that is, I think he was traded for reasons that go beyond ‘practical’ purposes. Evidence? All the talk by hockey insiders about Dion. IE: Mr Cherry refering to him as a ‘rock star’.
Also, Im quite happy Blago reads my blog. I knew I was huge in Chicago.
