Examining the Thinking Behind Sutter's Mid-Season Rebuild

Let's assume for a moment that this is the extent of Darryl Sutter's moves for the season. Instead of agonizing over hypothetical future deals for other top six forwards, we can look at this newest collection of players and ask outselves...what is Darryl thinking?

Each trade has been assessed on it's own potential merits, but it's time to look at the psychology behind the moves in a broader sense. What contributed to the gutting of a club Sutter was defending as adequate a few short months ago?

Star-divide

Over-Steering

Although frequently portrayed as stoic, Sutter's recent actions are those of a man desperately working against the sand in the hour-glass. After their recent 1-in-10 run, the Flames will need to go 16-9-1 in their final 26 games in order to garner 95 points (the proposed post-season cut-off point in the Western Conference). That's a 62% win rate, one well above the Flames efforts to date. Make no mistake, Calgary is battling for it's play-off life and Sutter for his very job. The amount of dollars, promises, coaches and players that have passed through this town in the last few years, without any real change in results, leaves the final accusatory finger pointing at the man upstairs.

There's more than just mere panic here, however. There's a definite purpose to the madness; one that extends beyond an effort to merely correct the Flames offensive woes I think.

Darryl Sutter's a guy that has stepped on a few landmines during his time here. Some forget that this his first go-round in the role of GM and many of his years have been spent learning on the job. As such, there's evidence of Daz over-steering in reaction to previous mistakes or perceived short-comings.

For example, during the mythical Cup run in '04, the club ran low on defenders due to injuries to Lydman, Gauthier and Warrener. That the team muddled through the rest of the play-offs with rookies Montador, Commodore and (briefly) Brennan Evans was a small miracle. Ever after, Sutter has made certain to stack the club with NHL-ready blueliners (and re-stock the organizational depth via the draft besides). As a result, the Flames are now swimming in defenders.

More to the point, last season the Flames were first in the NW and third in the Conference at the trade deadline. Although the team was dealing with some injury problems (Langkow, Bertuzzi, Giordano) and were already pressed tightly against the salary cap ceiling, Sutter gambled on Olli Jokinen. It's a gamble that sunk the team. More injuries hit the club, Jokinen's relatively expensive salary ate up what little cap space was remaining and the Flames stumbled badly down the stretch and into the play-offs. It was a massive blunder. This summer, he canned Keenan, fortified the blueliner further and made it clear throughout the organization that reducing goals against was the new imperative. More over-steering.

Of course, the team trundled along uncertainly under the weight of it's expensive blueline. The GA went down, but so did the GF. Enter the next correction - Flames need scorers! But, this time the strategy was informed by last year's trade deadline failure: Sutter's current efforts look to be exactly opposed to the tact he took previously. Diversification rather than consolidation. He's cleared out cap dollars while adding bodies to the pile. The Flames now have some 17 forwards and more than 1.7M in cap space - there's literally zero chance they'll be caught in a similar predicament come March/April. It may not work to get the club over the hump, but by god they'll never be caught with no cap room and a 3 line roster again.

Reclamation Projects

Of course, one thing that has remained constant throughout Sutter's reignin Calgary is his taste for reclamation projects. He's hit some homeruns (Huselius, Kipper), had some moderate success (Dawes, Nolan) and failures (Zyuzin, Friesen, Amonte, Bertuzzi arguably).

Seeking out "buy low" acquisitions is a sensible GM strategy for uncovering potentially undervalued players, particularly in a cap environment. However it's one that requires nuance and a thorough understanding of the guy in question. Is his value depressed because of circumstances? Bounces? Or was has he rightfully bottomed out? Sometimes a change of venue works to re-invigorate a player's career. Correctly identifying those players is the key to buying low. On the other hand, there are many reclamation projects that represent bad bets. Guys who have to rebound fully in order to provide value for their dollars, for example. Guys at a certain age whose performance is on the decline, etc.

Unfortunately, Sutter has been rather indiscriminate in his reclamation projects over the years. He's made good bets and bad ones. As long as the guy was "good" previously, but isn't now, Sutter has figured "potential rebound!". Kotalik, unfortunately looks like one of the bad ones to me (he was never that good), but it remains to be seen.

Overall, the recent round of moves seems bizarre and unprecedented, but arguably are a result of established Sutter habits. The severity and extent of the changes were no doubt augmented by the losing streak and resultant threat to miss the post-season, but there's still something utterly Daz-like about them.

Very well written, definitely sheds new light on Sutter’s schemes. One positive thing in all of this is that the Flames next next 4 matchups are softer eastern conference teams (with the exception of Ottawa being hot right now).

I was at the Leafs/Devils game last night and was amazed how quickly Sjostrom played. He was on a line with Kulemin and Wallin, they were wheeling all night…..Makes me wonder what he could have done if Brent would have put him on a second line here. Phaneuf played pretty well also, couldn’t believe he dropped the gloves 6 minutes in – obviously trying to impress burke and wilson…….I think all the Flames need is a little jump, hoping Higgins and Hagman can provide that, and as long as the other new guys don’t mess up and our guys play a tight game we should be able to pull of some W’s here. DON’T GIVE UP JUST YET!

Re: Phaneuf, the Team1040 crew here in Vancouver asked Ferraro about his play last night on today’s morning show, and Ferraro said point blank, “If he had played like that in Calgary, he’d still be a Flame. But he didn’t, and Leafs fans who expect to see that every night should prepare for disappointment.” It wasn’t the answer the Team wanted to hear — they were clearly hoping for a “The Flames blew it” answer — but it did make me nod my head in agreement.

From Bob McKenzie’s Twitter.

Teams in mix for Kovalchuk include: Boston, New Jersey, Rangers, Philadelphia, Calgary, Chicago and L.A. Some more. Some less. Auction time.

Interesting. It’ll be tough to out-bid 6 other teams I’d think.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 3, 2010 1:05 PM PST up reply actions

I think the Kovalchuk deal happens tonight but yeah you’d think the front runners would be Boston and Los Angeles as they could possibly throw together the best deal.

But if Calgary were to make a serious pitch for Kovalchuk Kent. Who would you have in it?

Unless Donny W has a gambling debt owed to Daz, I don’t see him accepting Moss, Kotalik, et al for Kovi or Colby. But then again…Daz traded Phaneuf without telling any other GM for probably a worse deal than he could of gotten…so anything is possible in that good ol’ boys club.

Atlanta would demand youth with upside in lieu of picks (which the Flames have none). Backlund would be an expected request. Our 4th liners are not what Waddell is looking for

Kovalchuk is too expensive

Sutter is trying to rectify the mistake of not having a balanced payroll-too many high priced defencemen and too many low priced forwards. Kovalchuk is too expensive and would swing the pendulum to a few high priced forwards. Balance is needed. With many soon to be free-agents in the trade dividends its a dire situation. Topped by few draft picks-even a first round lost in the Jokinen deal-wow-no wonder Calgary looks like a Rag Tag bunch of loose cannons much like the NY Rangers. Still no back up Goalie so lets pray that Kipper takes his vitamins-and no draft picks in the two trade deals. Why not clean house and have a fresh training camp mid-season-at least the Olympic break will allow for try-outs. I hope more deals are coming-and we did get something in return for Jokinen, and we get a bunch of NHL Casino Chips for Phaneuf. I must say one top line forward and a higher draft pick would have been nice for a player like Phaneuf.

Kovalchuk would be a pure rental. His price would be irrevelent.

rental for what…a push to clinch the 8th spot? tonight might turn out to be a serious wake up call for us. if they struggle against CAR…we’d all better get used to the idea of being in the lottery in May…oh yeah we aren’t going to be in that either…oh well….

Yes. I say that without an ounce of sarcasm. At this point, the play-offs aren’t assured and Sutter is going to do whatever to get the team into the post-season.

re: reclamation projects: the cheap ones (freddan, dawes, arguably bertuzzi) are no-brainers. if they work, you’re a genius. if they don’t work, you’ve got yourself serviceable pluggers that can be dealt. the higher-paid ones (kotalik, higgins, mayers) have much bigger downsides for obvious reasons. gambling on those is ridiculous.

by walkinvisible on Feb 3, 2010 1:33 PM PST reply actions

There’s an opportunity cost that comes with reclamation projects as well. For example, signing Friesen for offense at the point he was at in his career was a terrible gamble – not only because it wasn’t going to happen, but it also meant the team forgoing other offensive options.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 3, 2010 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t see Higgins and Mayers having that big a downside since they’re UFA. The Flames have more cap space than before this little experiment began, so in terms of flexibility, they’re certainly no worse off having those two guys on the roster. Kotalik is a poor bet, of course, since he’s on the book for two more years.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 3, 2010 1:47 PM PST up reply actions

by Robert Cleave on Feb 3, 2010 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

Flames should forget about Kovi and try and land 1 or 2 cheaper yet still reliable guys……everyone’s attention is on Kovalchuk right now, Sutter should try and make something else happen.

by dotfras on Feb 3, 2010 1:42 PM PST reply actions

He’s the guy in ATL who gets all the really crappy assigments so that Kovalchuk can score at a high rate. Last year he had the best adjusted corsi rate on his team and played against some of the toughest competition. He also scored 20 goals.

He’s the type of guy that helps teams win, even though he’s not flashy. He’s the inverse of Kotalik, actually.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 3, 2010 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

Once, he’s scored 20 goals once. Other then that his offensive totals have been pretty ho-hum year in year out. He looks like he’s a pain in the ass to play against but nothing about the guy says “Go out and get me!!”

by Parallex on Feb 3, 2010 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

Not…really. He’s sort of like Rene Bourque or (last year’s) David Moss.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 3, 2010 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

His offensive totals thus far suggest he’s more this year David Moss. He always reminds me more of Glencross (with a more pest like attitude on the ice) to be honest.

No. If we did, we would be winning.

by Justin Azevedo on Feb 3, 2010 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

I remember betting on Armstrong being a Sutter pickup a couple years back (last year?)

Now though I think we have enough Armstrong like guys, even if he is at the top end of his niche.

by therealdeal on Feb 3, 2010 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

Im not so sure about that. It’d be nice to have another Rene Bourque play with Iginla I think. Glencross is a decent 3rd liner, but he’s lost against the big boys. So is Boyd, Backlund, Kotalik and Higgins. Moss was great last year but seems two steps back now. Dawes played well enough in that role I guess, but I don’t think he’s ideal. Stajan and Hgaman are decent, mid-level comp guys but I don’t think they’ve ever gone against heavy lifters.

The Flames basically have 3 proven ES outscorers right now: Iginla (although that’s becoming debatable), Bourque and Langkow. Armstrong is probably closer to their level than others on the club.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 3, 2010 2:25 PM PST up reply actions

Armstrong’s a right shot as well.

Hagman/Bourque-Stajan-Iginla
Bourque/Hagman-Langkow-Armstrong

or Stajan and Langkow flip lines, take your pick, really. If Moss was at his level from last year, I doubt we’d be having this discussion, but he hasn’t been there, at least so far.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 3, 2010 2:30 PM PST up reply actions

It’s not that I don’t like Colby Armstrong, I’ve sung his praises and he has lots of upside. By the looks of his desjardins numbers though he’s playing middle of the road competition (lesser than Kovy) and is scoring at ES at about half the rate. AND he’s coming from the east…

My personal feeling is we need someone who can put the puck in the net, and I’m not sure the Cheese is going to get that done very consistently.

On the other hand my goal of spreading his nickname worldwide will become a lot easier if he plays for the Flames.

by therealdeal on Feb 3, 2010 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

that is an excellent nickname.

by Passive Voice on Feb 3, 2010 2:53 PM PST up reply actions

A. Kovalchuk (+ 1 other?) goes elsewhere for two or three immediate players and prospect/pick

then B. Someone like Armstong + pick for Sarich + Dawes/Moss/other

I don’t think Calgary has anything to match the offer straight up for Kovalchuk….or the cash to sign him next year.

BUT, we do have abundance right now, and likely they will be looking to fill the hole(s) with numbers. That’s the only way I can see us being involved.

by LawrenceS on Feb 3, 2010 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

First off, Great article.

Quantity over quality seems to be the imparative here. Sutter has been talking lately about “distribution of wealth” and all of that crap. It’s bull shit. There is no point to having 9 players who are 2nd and 3rd liners. Sure, depth is good, but when you have one Elite player, you can’t expect him to succeed against first lines. There is one, maybe two players in the NHL who can take on a first line all by themselves-neither of which play for the Flames. So, you spend big money on the first line and top 3 d-men, middle money on the 2nd line and 4/5 d-men, and hope you’ve drafted a couple young kids who can play 3rd and 4th line minutes. Sutter’s philosophy, at least this year, is to spend mid-range on 10 forwards, and go big bucks on the rear end. There are still 3 d-men who make over 3.5 mil/year and only 2 guys up front making more then that.

Go Flames Go
Where Ales Kotalik is the saviour of the franchise. Yuck.

3.5 is a rather arbitrary cut off point… lower that to 3.0 and it’s the same # of d-men but 4 forwards.

by Parallex on Feb 3, 2010 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

That’s still insane. And I went 3.5 because it is half of what the highest paid player on our team makes.

Agreed. Distributing the skill/salary more evenly amongst the lines is not necessarily a poor decision (Pittsburgh has done a pretty good job of it, for example), but Sutter is not doing a good job of it by using overpaid players and too many lower-level players.

Kovalchuk?-give Boyd a raise instead

I’m not sure how this will go over but I think its better to pay players within the organization and ultimately keep them than to through big money at one "Star/Saviour. Boyd deserves an extention and raise-Lundmark deserves a commitment. Anyone believe in team morale? Landing a big name as a rental is just like saying the GM is a Madame at the SaddleDome Man-Ho Ranch where the Money comes before the Game. You pay to play. Yes the money is relevant. Signing rentals is relevant. Respect and Morale are desired to build a winner. If rentals work the the Madison Garden Cat House would of raised the Cup ten years ago, instead we have a salary cap to curb the rental approach and achieve parity between have and have not markets.

Possible Explanations

a) Scorched Earth Policy – Making it tough on his replacement.
b) Showboating – Hoping to steal JFJr’s current job, whatever that is.
c) Suckholing – Hoping to become Sather’s assistant.
