Sources are rumbling that a deal is nearly complete that would send Atlanta's franchise player to the Kings.

FTR claims that Kovalchuk may be headed to LA soon. Another hit to for the "flip Kotalik for Kovalchuk" thing.

I will just reiterate my theory that it’s a 3-way trade between Calgary, LA, and Atl.

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 2, 2010 8:15 PM PST reply actions

FROLOV.

That would be great. And therefore I really, really doubt it. Who gets the turd in that deal? If Kovalchuk and Frolov are changing hands and Im the guy left standing with Kotalik, I’d be steamed.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 2, 2010 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

Nobody in Atlanta cares about hockey anyway. It’s better for everyone if they get all the crap deals. :D Regardless of how far-fetched it may seem at this point, I am keeping the faith/delusion for one last go-round, and if I’m right then I’ll look like I’m prescient. Maybe I’ll get a job as a scout or pundit if I toss it on the resume.

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 2, 2010 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

I live in Atlanta and I care about hockey

Just invalidated your argument. But nobody cares about Calgarians except Calgarians, so no one that matters will care.

BAM

Poor jokes aside, yes, Atlanta is struggling as a franchise right now. You can attribute that to many shortcomings, mostly in the front office/ownership. The sports fan base here has huge potential but it’s also very fickle, so they can share some of the blame. But people do care, I believe, it’s a situation where you don’t want to get too attached to something that’s going to disappoint you or eventually leave. The inability to consistently ice a winning team, keep faces of the franchise type players, and the constant rumors of relocation definitely keep people away.

They have bumbled the cultivation of hockey in that city since day one and when Kovalchuk leaves, you’ll see a small amount of fans disassociate themselves with the team altogether. It’s not that they were Kovalchuk fans before they were Thrashers fans. They know that any good talent is going to scram at the first chance they get because the ownership is such a mess and the chance of signing high profile free agents doesn’t exist.

As I read through this blog, I see a fair amount of delusion going around.

NOBODY WANTS KOTALIK. HE’S A BAD PLAYER WITH AN EVEN WORSE CONTRACT. QUIT PRETENDING YOU’LL BE GETTING ANYTHING FOR HIM OF VALUE, IT’S RIDICULOUS. Hopefully, that rational, yet very loud statement will resonate with the dum dums that really think Atlanta has any interest in someone that was just traded away from NY as a salary dump.

by Cracker! on Feb 3, 2010 5:45 AM PST up reply actions

It’s not delusion so much as silliness originating from other sources. Kovalchuk to Calgary is a TSN thing, as apparently, was the idea that Kotalik was part of the package. Nobody really believes it is realistic.

So really, go fuck yourself if you are simply going to come here and call people deluded or “dum dums”.

by Resolute on Feb 3, 2010 6:38 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I apologize for taking the Kotalik talk out of context

But from an outsider’s perspective, it was easy to confuse with delusion.

I understand your wrath, Atlanta has got hosed in deals…and for your team to get the shittier end of the stick in 2 deals in as many days…I can empathize with the place from which your dickish retort originates.

by Cracker! on Feb 3, 2010 6:58 AM PST up reply actions

Well, shittier end of the stick in one, no doubt. The Phaneuf deal is a couple years away from being decided, imo.

And believe me, I agree that Kotalik won’t be the centrepiece for any deal involving the likes of Kovalchuk (Lecavalier, Richards, etc.). If nothing else, the talk is more or less an attempt at staying sane.

So… Moss, Higgins and McGrattan for Kovalchuk? ;o)

by Resolute on Feb 3, 2010 7:11 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe for a Kovalchuk bobble head doll

It does, however, play better defense than the real Ilya.

I think Colby Armstrong is a more legitimate acquisition for you guys given the trade pieces you have available.

by Cracker! on Feb 3, 2010 7:29 AM PST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure I made it quite clear that my statements were delusional when I mentioned Kotalik being part of a 3-way trade. However, if he does go to Atlanta for whatever reason I may have to rub it in your face now, just a little. =D

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 3, 2010 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

If true

I would expect it to look like this:

Atlanta gets Kotalik, Moss, and LA prospect (a real good one too)

LA gets Kovalchuk and minor flames prospect to replace theirs (think Seabrook or Armstrong/Chucko)

Calgary gets Frolov

by canadiancolts on Feb 2, 2010 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

that seems pretty fair, i think.

by Passive Voice on Feb 2, 2010 8:50 PM PST up reply actions

You’d probably have to go much higher on the prospect list. Howse? Nemisz, Negrin or Pelech certainly. Probably Backlund if we were going to be more realistic.

I appreciate this on a great level, particularly if it’s in reference to Zoolander: The Greatest Film Of All Time.

Either today I was quoting Major League, another great movie, in describing Ales’ skillset…so why not…its a reference to Zoolander which is equally as good of a movie.

Hell, no ;-) As usual, there are just differing opinions. I don’t know how many more nights we can go until 2 or 3 am around here, but I have a feeling Daz is likely going to force us to find out.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 2, 2010 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Colby Armstrong ends up being part of some sort of move. I have my doubts about him staying in ATL.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 2, 2010 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

That’s a player we should be targeting. I know a guy like Kotalik may seem sexier because he’s a multiple 20 goal scorer, btut Armstrong is the superior player.

If it ended up that the Flames moved a couple of pieces for him, I’d be happy.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 2, 2010 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

Happier than with Kotalik, that’s for sure. And I love Armstrong. However, he feels like one more of many similar players on the Flames…

by maimster on Feb 2, 2010 9:00 PM PST up reply actions

Kovalchuk → LA
Frolov, Armstrong → Calgary
Half of Calgary’s mess of recent tradepieces (Moss+everyone except maybe White and Higgins) → Atl

I don’t remember a trading deadline with as much intrigue as the last couple of days, and this isn’t even a trading deadline. Is this just a function of the age of blogs?

by maimster on Feb 2, 2010 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely more a function of the age of Sutter going completely bonkers.

You know, you usually trade to improve the team, now and in the long term. The trade made last night did neither.

A little bit about the blogs, to be sure. I think the complete lack of activity around the league also lead to some of this pent up stuff, and keep in mind that with the Flames in the middle of it all, we’re in the middle of it around these parts. It’s more drama than I’d prefer, but Sutter’s fighting for his job. That, as SoV has just noted while I was typing this, can turn up the batshit factor.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 2, 2010 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 2, 2010 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

The Abbotsford Heat.

by maimster on Feb 2, 2010 8:56 PM PST up reply actions

Lundmark has value. 4th round draft pick value mind you, but he’s certainly shown to be a serviceable player.

by Resolute on Feb 3, 2010 6:42 AM PST up reply actions

LA would be wise to trade Doughty for Kovalchuk. They have a ton of forward depth so Kovy would actually get the soft minutes he needs, and Doughty… well let’s just say he’s being hyped like Phaneuf from four years ago. You watch, he’ll take a step back once he faces real comp, the public opinion will turn, and then he’ll take two steps forward and nobody will notice.

by R O on Feb 2, 2010 9:07 PM PST reply actions

No offense, but that’s the worst trade proposal I have ever heard

by Justin Azevedo on Feb 2, 2010 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

Not if I was LA I wouldn’t. I don’t think Doughty belongs on the Olympic team right now, but he is a franchise-type defenceman. Would not trade him for a one-dimensional forward.

by Resolute on Feb 3, 2010 6:43 AM PST up reply actions

Doughty is the poster boy of young d-men right now. He faces mid level comp and is overrated offensively. I would not be surprised to see him get shit kicked in the Olympics.

by Justin Azevedo on Feb 2, 2010 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

Bang on. He will have excellent forwards in front of him, of course, but at the same time he’ll be facing Ovechkins or Malkins.

by R O on Feb 2, 2010 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

I wish I had extensive stats from last year’s World Championships. He was probably against 3rd and 4th line talent @ ES and I’m willing to bet his special teams time was quite small. Everyone talks of how he got better as he went on-in reality, he just played against longer vs. the 3rd and 4th line guys as Jbo and others soaked up more minutes vs. the top 6.

by Justin Azevedo on Feb 2, 2010 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly, M F. He is far too valuable- a 20 year old with 42 points so far. I don’t think he should have made Team Canada over Green or Bouw, but just because he isn’t LA’s first choice to defend Marleau, Heatley, Thornton or Perry, Getzlaf, Ryan doesn’t mean he is entirely ineffective

by Rod Blogojevich on Feb 2, 2010 9:34 PM PST up reply actions

Do you mean LA could get a lot for Doughty?

I don’t doubt that, particularly in the summer. He’s still salary controlled which is appealing to some teams, although the sheltering that a winning team would be required to put him under will boost his counting numbers to the point where his second contract will probably be huge.

Still, I think that Doughty’s public perception is a lot higher than his ability to help the team win, so LA would be wise to take advantage and start any big fish hunting with Doughty on the table. Especially as it appears this year they could be poised to do some damage if they make the playoffs.

In any case if I were really in Lombardi’s shoes I’d be chasing a goalie. But since there are rumors he wants Kovalchuk, the same logic applies (trade Doughty for big fish).

by R O on Feb 2, 2010 9:30 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t really by this sheltered stuff that gets thrown around so freely. Doughty faces top pairing QComp, both by Gabe’s traditional and Corsi measures, and looking at his Zone Start, which people would do, is a bit of a red herring. They’d see 55% O/D, and go “sheltered”. Bullshit. He’s been on the ice for more total D zone faceoffs than any other King. That isn’t sheltered, that’s playing a metric shit-ton in all situations. He’s not perfect, but go back to BTN now that Gabe has updated 07/08 and 08/09 for Corsi of Comp. He’s a mile ahead of where Phaneuf was.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 2, 2010 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I recall people saying that he did face the big boys every night….

by M F on Feb 2, 2010 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

Did you guys hear that some GMs didnt even Daz was trading Dion and had they known, they would of made a better offer than Burkie. I’m really wondering whether or not Daz did his due diligence on this one…or was he working this deal for months with Mr. Pugnacious and that’s that. Maybe we should of gotten Schenn instead of White…Leafs Nation would buy that if it meant getting Dion. You see where I’m getting at?

If the Flames are involved in a three way…who wants (ed) Kotalik? You would have to think that ANY team could have had him for nothing so what makes him of ANY value?

It makes zero sense to me if he is involved in a 3 way and the only way it makes sense is if Sutter sees him as a useful tool. Am I missing something?

hey – long tim surfer, first time typer

there are a lot of guesses (prayers?) here about possible flips of Kotalik. if that happens, great. though I think Daz is almost set on his new line-up.

many of the guesses have Kot + Moss + prospect for a Stud in return (frolov etc).

I like David Moss. I’m sure he’s a good guy. But he is not an asset anyone will be looking for in trade. cuz everyone has a david moss. I think Daz has baked his cake. no one trades quality (frolov or kovy) for quantity (three 3rd liners).

well. almost nobody.
