Cgy-NYR trade call is happening now. Deal is exactly as @DarrenDreger reported it last night - Jokinen/Prust for Higgins/Kotalik.

McKenzie says the trade is going down.

If this isn't a precursor to another deal, then I'll lead the "fire Sutter" parade.

I’ll have something more detailed tomorrow.

For now, my short version:

Kotalik is terrible. His contract is terrible. If Sutter doesn’t flip him for something else (be it another player or basket of fruit) it’s an absolutely brutal acquisition.

Higgins was once a good player who may or may not be recoverable. He’s probably a step up from Nystrom et al.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 1, 2010 9:48 PM PST reply actions

This fruit basket concept is intriguing. Can we really trade players for baskets of fruit? Because I think 3-4 fruit baskets on the team would provide an optimal balance of defense and offense.

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 1, 2010 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

they would have a resonable cap hit.

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 1, 2010 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

Terrible idea, if we sign the apple for 1.2M we’ll be woefully short on orage not to mention having zero chance at getting banana.

Banana’s on the downside of his career.

At least Higgins’ contract is done, so even if he can’t be salvaged, they can cut their losses. Kotalik’s contract is a gigantic black hole.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 1, 2010 9:51 PM PST up reply actions

I guess I should add: I’m still glad to be rid of Jokinen and it kinda sucks to lose Prust.

I would take a 3rd Round Draft Pick and some cash for him.

If this deal was a Two for One deal it would make sense but there is going to be no room for Conroy if and when he returns which f’ing sucks.

i’m not sure how long it will take me to get over the blatant insolence of the sutter group. as much as i dislike jokinen, that shit is fucking brutal. even if there is a flip, that’s horrendous player management.

Not on TSN’s website yet.

I’m not sure if it’s fire Sutter or abandon the ownership group. If Sutter’s hand is being forced here, then I have no faith in our overlords.

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 9:54 PM PST reply actions

well the jokinen trade was an ownership deal, right ? so wtf is this then ? sweet jesus, lombardi, prust, vandermeer and a first rounder for KOTALIK ?

by walkinvisible on Feb 1, 2010 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

This ownership doesn’t meddle like that. Never have.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 1, 2010 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

they do approve, though, i’m guessing…. i know there has been meetings, of late.

by walkinvisible on Feb 1, 2010 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

That is true. I was confident that they would stand pat after the losing streak.

The Phaneuf trade is defensible from various angles but this move in isolation screams of desperation though.

And either the ownership approves of the desperation, or they are the catalyst for it.

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

I think Sutter has a blank check to run the org from a hockey side of things. I doubt he needs approval for trades.

As I said, blame the douche out east that leaked the trade. The Flames did nothing wrong there, but had to eat the crap that assholes like Dreger forced down their throats.

Darren Dreger is the scumbag out of all of this. He’s the idiot who put four players through 24 hours of stupidity because of his own selfish need to be the next Eklund.

by Resolute on Feb 2, 2010 8:39 AM PST up reply actions

agreed. Dreger really ran with this one and put Daz in a horrible spot. i know every single point matters and all which is why they had to play them last night…but sometimes it is more important to save face and just sit them out. hindsight being 20/20, they obviously did not help prevent the anemic play against the Flyers…so it was all for null. professionally speaking though, and its my opinion, since the cat was out of the bag…i sit them.

by maimster on Feb 2, 2010 7:58 AM PST up reply actions

I might have to look at that again. It might be just for guys who haven’t had it kick in yet, like Dion’s deal giving him an NTC July 1.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 1, 2010 10:15 PM PST up reply actions

You are correct. Section 11.8 (a) of the CBA. Unless the Leafs so choose, they are not bound by the NMC Phaneuf had that was going to take effect July 1.

by Resolute on Feb 2, 2010 9:23 AM PST up reply actions

there’s a legal basis behind this though…its rooted in contract law…first of all, the new team wasn’t the initial party in privity with the player so there needs to be some form of consideration exchanged between them to uphold it… in a trade scenario there is no consideration exchanged between the team and player…just consideration exchanged between the teams. so the lack of consideration exchanged between the player and his new team leads to not upholding the NMC. understand though that there was consideration when the player signed with the original team which is why it was the clause was legal in the first place. third of all, depending on the waiver provisions of the contract, by actually getting traded you waive it the clause….so there you go. :)

Maybe, it doesn’t matter that much. I just think 2.25 for Higgins is awful, and 3 for Kotalik is awful. I guess Higgins is a UFA…so there’s that.

Somehow though, I feel like saying “Well, he used to be good, but if he’s not he’s gone soon” just isn’t a winning thought line

Right, but we’re comparing him to Kotalik…who was NEVER good.

I was just thinking back to the summer. You know, after Jay Bouwmeester was signed. I remember all the discussions about the embarassment of riches that Calgary was dealing with. It was a simpler time. I miss those days. You know, before people realized that you had to actually score goals to win hockey games.

copypasta FTW.

 Trade went through.

Flames fans breathe a sigh of relief now that Joker’s unproductiveness and massive contract are gone, but the faces of relief quickly change to faces of disgust at the mediocrity of Kotalik and the fact that they just got an American Joker in Higgins and he’s sticking around for 2 more seasons.

I realize I`ll be crucified by my fellow Canuck fans for saying this, but I really like Nigel Dawes. Beautiful hands and great speed, awesome pick up for Calgary management, do you guys think Sutter will take Bernier and his stone hands for him?

PLEASE. WATCHING HIM TRY TO STICKHANDLE IS LIKE WATCHING JOHN TRAVOLTA ACCIDENTALLY SHOOT MARVIN IN THE FACE OVER AND OVER AGAIN. HORRIFYING YET SOMEWHAT AMUSING.

How can the Flames ownership approve this? How???

I am assuming they approve all deals because money is involved after all. If they don’t they are just stupid.

Operating under that assumption – why??? How many season ticket holders called in to cancel their tickets for next year? Enough to matter?

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 10:34 PM PST reply actions

Not many I suspect. I haven’t lived in CGY since 1985 but I expect that Flames tix are still a status symbol

by paul-marc on Feb 1, 2010 10:36 PM PST up reply actions

The money’s the same for this year, so maybe Murray Edwards gives Daz free reign unless there’s a real expenditure.

STH’s aren’t giving them up unless it’s a bad team for a few years. Corporate tickets are still viable in the market, as paul-marc says.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 1, 2010 10:37 PM PST up reply actions

That’s my thinking as well (on the tix) – the Flames are going to make money next year.

Tinkering, I could have agreed with. Even the Dion move can be looked at as a long term financial adjustment and roster balancing, but this is beyond a shake up. It’s a blowup, especially with another move maybe in the hopper.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 1, 2010 10:43 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, the Dion “core” thing is overblown, the only core thing about any of the core players is their contract term. It was a hockey move, adjust strength within the roster, the need to do so coudln’t be denied, the only thing to debate is “was it enough?”

This… no direction or vision or sense of a plan.

That Joker interview was pretty sad. Lost amongst it actually is the “slap in the face” comment. But aside from that, Olli is a consumate professional. Slightly embarassed by the Flames franchise tonight.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 1, 2010 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

This isn’t tinkering. The Flames sent their alleged number one center and a very well regarded, if incomplete, 24 year old defenceman who was in the first pair. That sounds perilously close to a blow up.

by Robert Cleave on Feb 1, 2010 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah considering it’s mid-season this is a bigger roster shake-up than MTL this past summer.

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

by Kent Wilson on Feb 1, 2010 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

by Robert Cleave on Feb 1, 2010 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

yeah I thought of MTL this summer too…making those trades…signing guys you normally wouldnt sign…and refusing to sign pretty much all your UFAs including a guy your fan base was in love with regardless of his play is pretty much a shake-up…

the fact this is happening in the middle of the season makes this definitely a roster shakeup…especially if all these guys stay till the end of the season.

And the FUNNY thing! A chunk of the problem can be attributed to puck luck (no one tells the Hockey Gods what to do) and another chunk laid at the feet of Sutter.

Iginla-Langkow together could play against the best, they played against the best for fucksakes for 7 games, kicked ass in 5 of them, and a bad-bounce game split that duo up. From a risk-management perspective that has to be tried first.

I’ll say this: we lived through 96-03, we’ll survive this. Although my own fandom was severely strained, I ended up having to follow the Leafs at playoff time for instance.

But this team was more competitive today than it will be tomorrow, I think.

Two more years each on their deals. That doesn’t make them assets, that makes them problems for a lot of teams given they’re both 30 plus.

BUT NOW…

you can’t try and convince a team/teams to take both Sarich AND Kotalik.

Oh God.

I just thought of something. Darryl the other day was talking about spreading the money around. I can only hope he was taking the piss, because Hagman + Kotalik (each with $3M salary) fit his proposed salary structure to a T.

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 11:29 PM PST reply actions

Ok, let's work this through logically.

What do we have? Tons of wingers, depth at D, Great #1 Goalie
What do we need? Backup, Top line center/winger
What do we need to get ride of? Sarich’s, Kotalik’s contract.

by LawrenceS on Feb 1, 2010 11:29 PM PST reply actions

Whos’ available for the “needs”.

Top line: Kovalchuk, Lecav maybe. Neither of which I like but these are the offensive players that could be had. The guys I really like are the guys that can’t be had, e.g. the Nash’s, Hossa’s, etc.

For backups: several. Biron, Harding, (possibly one of MTL’s goalies although they seem content running the tandem), anyone else?

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 11:33 PM PST up reply actions

Neither of MTL’s goaltenders wants to be a backup, though.

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 2, 2010 1:50 AM PST up reply actions

Vinny is going absolutely nowhere…he has an NMC and loves Tampa…and you don’t even want to know about his contract…

"Where do you go from here, Dion?" "I go to Toronto."
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.

by KingJafi on Feb 2, 2010 7:01 AM PST up reply actions

If we get rid of Sarich then we need to look for a Dman in the offseason, a possible Pardy in the top 4 is not comforting. Fortunately I believe there are a few Dmen who are coming off, Seidenberg, Hamhuis?

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 11:35 PM PST up reply actions

I can’t realistically think of any package that makes sense. There are only really 5 or so teams certainly in selling mode:

Edm, Clb, Tor, Car…maybe the Islanders and Blues, but not really.

None of those teams address our goalie issues….except Biron…or maybe ugh…Legace.

SO it has to be a big time rental player – UFA.

Kotalik is a RW and a right handed shot…so I dunno if he could play LW. Therefore, he’s useless to us, cause he’s no upgrade to Moss.

I can’t get my mind around it.

by LawrenceS on Feb 1, 2010 11:43 PM PST up reply actions

The only natural centres coming up UFA are Marleau (not going to happen) and Olli.
LW – only one is Kovalchuk, Frolov and Tanguay…(but I can’t see it being Tanguay)

There’s aren’t many out there that aren’t: too old, in a playoffs race, in the conference….

by LawrenceS on Feb 1, 2010 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

I wonder if STL will decide on a starter. If so Conklin might be had.

Toronto has laready given us all the forwards they cuold spare, I suppose we could always take Whitney from CAR. EDM has a couple guys worth talking about but as Kent has told me before EDM and CGY have never consummated a trade once. With CBJ it’s Nash or bust and unforutnatly that’s a bust.

Goddamn what a pickle.

by CofRed on Feb 1, 2010 11:38 PM PST up reply actions

Dallas won’t give up he who has been their best player this season for three 2nd line or worse players. I don’t think it’s plausible

by paul-marc on Feb 1, 2010 11:40 PM PST up reply actions

I do this trade in a heartbeat. Richards is a fantastic difference maker and you can’t pay these guys enough in the cap system.

Which means it won’t happen, unfortunately. Dallas is still in the playoff hunt and thier need is in goal.

If Darryl feels like the fanbase could tolerate pain this season (via another short playoff run or no playoffs) then he’d be wise to trade Kipper for Richards while Kipper is stopping pucks at a high rate.

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 11:40 PM PST up reply actions

I have to think that he was there for a reason , and the hold up on the Ranger deal was not because the Flames needed the players for tonights game. There is no way the aquired players are here for long and that makes sense.

ANother thing that is worht mentioning is a Kovalchuk type would likely have been more likely obtained with Phaneuf. The returns on the Phaneuf trade are real forwards, the returns on the Jokinen trade are fake forwards. The former obviously valuable to teams that need to win.

But the teams that have Kovalchuk types don’t need to win, they need to sell hope and tickets for next season, and a big name will do that.

by R O on Feb 1, 2010 11:48 PM PST reply actions

exactly. I just don’t see Kovalchuk coming. Then again, I couldn’t have imagined any of this….so what?

Coey Sarich for Bryan Allen? Saves 700k for 2 years. Ya, no?

I like Coey. I think I will call him that from now on. I think I’ll have another drink too.

I hope nobody has beat me to adding Kotalik for our fantasy league :)

Honestly, the only way I can describe the past two days for the Flames is...

A firesale.

Everything is going, at the same time.

I guess I am the minority in my opinion, but I like what Darryl Sutter has done with these moves. Sure, you get shut out tonight but that isn’t the point. You cannot expect chemistry overnight. Give it a couple games and you’ll start seeing some positive results. I’ve got $$$ on it. The Flames will turn it around soon, much to my dismay.
Who said Jokinen for Kovalchuk? Give your head a shake!

No. Like I said, IT IS A FIRESALE.

You’re the 2nd Canuck fan to say something nice. It really is that bad isn’t it? Sympathy and positivity from Canuck fans. This is like seeing Steve Smith and Grant Fuhr in Flames uniforms. Wrong.

Hey! No one’s posting anymore.

But I’m still having fun!

Don’t go….Look there’s some Cheez Whiz….and…and…some ice……we find a blender and we got process cheese slurpees…it’s still a party…c’mon!

Can you imagine that puke? Ugh. It would put the ‘chunks’ in ‘blowing chunks’. But I digress. Let’s trade somebody for somebody and a 1st rounder.

we dont have a first rounder

do we?

by DarrenZ on Feb 2, 2010 1:07 AM PST up reply actions

It’s perfectly clear ;-D Our somebody for their somebody and their first rounder. Boston sucks right now. Maybe their GM will go crazy too. We could get Bergeron and Toronto’s 1st. Krejci? What other centres they got?

How about Sarich and Nystrom to Tampa for Tanguay and Eminger (is he still there, I’ve lost track)

by paul-marc on Feb 2, 2010 1:26 AM PST reply actions

No way the Bolts would go for that. They got rid of Sarich once already.

Good morning, all. Rough night?
I’ve said it before, and I’m sayin’ it again: sometimes it is a blessing to be a Flames fan in the Maritimes…went to bed last night after the first period, full of hope and blissfully unaware that my team still can’t score a jeezless goal against an NHL team.
So, let me get this straight…as of right now, Darryl Sutter should fear for his life. But, if he flips Kotalik and Higgins and +? for something decent, then he is the second coming of Sam Pollock. Either way, there is going to be a parade in Calgary soon. But will Daz’s head be on a stick and his body on fire, or will he be sitting on the shoulders of a jubilant crowd? Anyway, have fun.
Hey, paul-marc, wake up…where’s the rest of the cheez whiz? I gotta make breakfast for the kids

by rich snake on Feb 2, 2010 2:40 AM PST reply actions

As a Ranger fan (not trying to start anything), I really don’t know why Sutter made this trade. I can understand wanting to overhaul the roster, but at least get a draft pick for Jokinen.

You guys are going to be happy with Ian White though, whereas I think Phaneuf has plateaued, White is still on the way up, and without the albatross contract. Don’t write that trade off yet.

by Dave Shapiro on Feb 2, 2010 6:13 AM PST reply actions

Most of us, I think, are either in (cautious) favour of the Leafs deal, or willing to wait and see before passing judgment. But we don’t get the NYR deal either, and are hoping there’s more to come before all is said in done.

by SarahM on Feb 2, 2010 6:19 AM PST up reply actions

I really don’t know if you can possibly spin Kotalik for anything. I guess it’s just two reclamation projects in Sutter’s eyes.

Kotalik is a lot like Fulton Reed from the movie Mighty Ducks, booming shot, hit’s the net one out of every five shots. Doesn’t play physical at all though, and doesn’t like playing even strength.

by Dave Shapiro on Feb 2, 2010 6:21 AM PST up reply actions

There are a few things that are giving me hope, mainly that the Flames have an excess of wingers. And that I think Darryl still wants his job, even if he isn’t acting like it.

A girl can dream, can’t she?

by SarahM on Feb 2, 2010 7:01 AM PST up reply actions

Well, the excess cap room needs to be used to re-sign Rene Bourque (boy would he look good in blue), and fill out the roster.

The verdict on these trades can’t be assessed until after the FA period in July.

Iggy needs a center though. I don’t think Langkow cuts it anymore.

by Dave Shapiro on Feb 2, 2010 7:55 AM PST up reply actions

Langkow has been Iggy’s centre for 7 of the 56 games the Flames have played so far. During those 7 games the Flames mostly dominated their opposiiton.

Iggy needs a centre, that much is obvious. So much so I think Darryl picked up on it and signed one.

by R O on Feb 2, 2010 8:04 AM PST up reply actions

Well to be honest as a Flames fan I really don’t know why Sutter made this trade either.

by Parallex on Feb 2, 2010 7:25 AM PST up reply actions

all this talk about Kotalik suddenly makes Jokinen look at least a little better…. just a thought….

by Rick J on Feb 2, 2010 6:29 AM PST reply actions

After last night, I’m willing to give this trade a chance. Kotalik simply can’t be worse than anyone else on this roster was.

by Resolute on Feb 2, 2010 6:45 AM PST reply actions

you’re not worried about 6 new bodies though? that’s a pretty daunting task…i mean you still need chemistry to seriously compete…right?

by KingJafi on Feb 2, 2010 7:04 AM PST up reply actions

Given chemistry is really just a synonym for winning, I would suggest we had no chemistry to begin with, therefore are at no greater risk in this regard.

It’s still a terrible trade, but fuck, after last night, I’m open to anything – even a guy who couldn’t hack it with the bloody Rangers.

by Resolute on Feb 2, 2010 7:28 AM PST up reply actions

Yes he can. He couldn’t even crack the Rangers roster that averages 1 goal for each of Gaborik’s 5.

by Dave Shapiro on Feb 2, 2010 7:57 AM PST up reply actions

You obviously did not watch last night’s game. ;)

by Resolute on Feb 2, 2010 8:32 AM PST up reply actions

Nope, but I watched enough of Kotalik to know what he can(’t) do.

So we traded one problem for another, but our new problem disappears at the end of the year.

by Dave Shapiro on Feb 2, 2010 9:17 AM PST up reply actions

My full thoughts here, but mostly this:
“Now, whether you believe we didn’t pull the trigger on the trade because Ballin’ [Brent]and Shifty [Darryl] thought putting Jokinen and Prust on the ice last night gave us a better chance to win or because Kotalik wasn’t waiving his limited NMC, something doesn’t add up….At all. My thoughts? The trade winds are still a-blowin’, and they’re a-blowin’ something big into Calgary.”

Kent, WI, anyone plugged in…. could you please pop by and tell us something’s cooking? That the end-game here isn’t half a season of Kotalik… followed by two seasons of Kotalik?

Lie if you have to.

by KingJafi on Feb 2, 2010 8:30 AM PST up reply actions

True, but I have a hard time believing we’ve put the team in a blender in order to pick up Ray Whitney.

by Parallex on Feb 2, 2010 8:33 AM PST up reply actions

hey as long as CAR takes Kotalik’s contract…the Flames attempt to make a push in the offseason with Whitney…and then spend money on wingers this summer…that would make sense. im really starting to get the feeling that dion was a problem off the ice…and the Flames needed a shakeup…so they made that trade. kotalik and higgins were moves to rid the Flames of Joker’s contract and kotalik would then enable them to get a more reliable forward like whitney. kovi is a pie in the sky.

Ah, and I had the feeling that Kent was taking RO’s words to heart, and lying!

by SarahM on Feb 2, 2010 8:34 AM PST up reply actions

Actually that’s not a bad idea. Just make up outrageous trade rumors and peddle them as if true, maybe one catches fire and by some cosmically comic series of events, it comes true.

I’ll start.

Kotalik for Halak
Kipper for Richards
Sarich and junk for Nash

:-D

There weren’t much in the way of rumours about this one until Dreger’s retard source leaked the trade.

by SmellOfVictory on Feb 2, 2010 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

Did I just read that Kotalik+ is flipping for Whitney? Or am I putting words on the interweb?

Obligatory comment just to make sure this thread doesn’t stay at 666 comments. We have enough bad happening right now as it is.
