Sources tell TSN that while the Rangers thought they had the deal basically agreed to on Sunday night, the Flames weren't ready to pull the trigger, in part, because they felt they needed Jokinen in the lineup tonight against Philadelphia in Calgary.

I don’t know how I would feel if I we’re Jokinen or Prust. Oh hey we need you tonight but then you’ll be on a plane to NYC right after the game’’.
I still hate this deal.
Where even Dion Phaneuf can get traded. So don't think your untouchable.
It occasionally happens that a player is supposed to be traded, but for whatever reason the trade doesn’t go through and the player remains. But has this ever happened? What could possibly motivate a player who knows he is leaving? Wouldn’t it be better to healthy scratch them? Or does Darryl sit these guys down and say “boys, it’s all just rumours, you’re not going anywhere” and hope they will buy it?
Anyway, even though I am sick of watching Joker in a flaming C I would rather see what he can do with Hagman than see what Kotalik can do with anybody. If it means Kovalchuk or Lecavalier or whoever is coming somehow for the Joker, tell Olli not to the let the door hit him on the ass on the way out.
Yeah, if there isn’t something bigger afoot then this deal makes very little sense. Trading an overpaid/underperforming guy with 1/3 of a season left for an overpaid/underperforming guy with 2 1/3 seasons left seems like such an obviously bad deal that I almost HAVE to assume something else is up.
You’d have to assume that anyways though… the Flames just acquired 3 forwards we have another 2 up from the Farm (that don’t seem to be going anywhere… yet) covering for another 3 on IR (who in so far as we know don’t have season ending injuries). Somethings gotta give soon.
Talk about milking the shit out of a player. Obviously this backfired in the Flames’ faces as none of it should of gotten out of the bag. Thats what you get for dealing with Slats. ;) I feel bad for Joker and Prust though. This whole thing has turned into quite a mess. I still hope none of this trade goes down.

It’s limited. 3 teams he wouldn’t be traded to, one of which was Calgary. No idea who the other two are.

Wow being traded to EDM really messed with the guy that he turned around and negotiated NMC that included another Alberta team in his next contract (I’m assuming EDM is one of the 3 teams with CAL). Its one thing to have Dany Heatley refuse to play for you, its another to have Alex Kotalik refuse to play for you.

It’s all Steve Tambellini and Kevin Lowe’s fault, Or one of the two.
Big Bad McKenzie still thinks this deal won’t get made by the end of the day so take that for what it’s worth.

Given the Flames most certainly did not release this trade, this isn’t a case of the deal falling through backfiring in their faces. It is a case of some retard out east leaking the negotiations and now leaving the Flames to deal with someone else’s mess.
Brooksie? Maybe Torts is on to something after all. Apparently he attempted to break a trade that had Dion going to NY and that backfired in his face…so this could simply be all his doing in spite of that or once again being overly excited to news break a trade. Either way, you’re right…Flames have to deal with someone else’s mess.

As per Boomer...
Ian White takes over Dion’s #3, Hagman will wear 11, Stajan dons 18 and Mayers will wear 19.
i just wasn’t sure HOW unofficially…. like, if he’d be smart enough not to ask for it ? or if he’d want it and be told he can’t have it ? either way, i’m good with 18. lombo’s been gone long enough….. but hey, ian white ? ballsy move, man.

if prust sits tonight then the trade is on. watch for jokinen (in that case) to sink a couple own-goals as a big eff you on the way out…. or at least hit the posts behind kippy in trying
Or Joker will have a hat-trick and promtly be traded for a guy who’s been scratched the last 6 games.

Brent sounds pretty high on Hagman. I asked Kent about Hagman and Stajan a few days ago, hoping there might be a way to get both. Didn’t picture Phaneuf being involved though.
I did think of Toronto when it came to Dion briefly before deciding they didn’t have a package that was suitable imo. I don’t mind the deal now, but it IS a bit of a gamble and could turn out ugly.

Yeah okay.
So, Sutter feels Jokinen is so bad that he’s willing to accept a headache like Kotalik, and yet he’s going to keep Jokinen for a game because he feels Jokinen on the roster gives his team the best chance to win.
Are you sure that’s what your sources said McKenzie? Or did you just make that up?
Keep selling the Kool-Aid Bob!
Anyways.
Time and various news stories have given me faint hope in the position that Kent, RC and Res hold: that Kotalik is in and out of Calgary. His NMC names Calgary so he really doesn’t want to be here. Just judging by Sutter’s previous moves, doesn’t seem like he would pursue such a player.
So the ultimate destination for Kotalik might be the other two teams on his NMC. I believe one of these is Edmonton, currently mired in a horrible losing streak. Are we getting Penner or Horcoff?
Speculate!
Indeed. Helps us determine easily who has inside sources, and who is simpy reading the competition.

my response to j.l’s take (which i commented there, but thought it worthy of discussion here):
my biggest question is this: who in their right minds (as a fan, teammate, coach or GM) would be satisfied with a player coasting along at 70% ??? the cliché is, of course, 110% every night (unless you’re markus naslund, then you cap out at 100%), but in my world i want a player that’s doing everything he can to help the team win. if dion has been holding back +/- 30% of his potential for the past two or three seasons, then good effin’ riddance. i think i’ll like this new #3 better. if dion wants to give his “all” in the big smoke, then good for leaf fans….
by walkinvisible on Feb 1, 2010 2:09 PM PST up reply actions
I wouldn’t mind Phaneuf giving his 50-70% if he was getting paid 50-70% what Darryl signed him for. That’s the ONLY issue I ever had with him – way too expensive for what he was giving to the team. Under 5 mil and I’d have loved him to stay on the Flames with his current play.
by SmellOfVictory on Feb 1, 2010 2:12 PM PST up reply actions
I think Bob McKenzie was attributing that percentage to Phaneuf not in terms of effort, but of potential. Certainly, there were games, far too many games, where it looked like Dion Phaneuf was only giving 50-70% effort, but you better start shaking your head really, really hard if you think that was exclusive to Phaneuf on this team.
I would say that there were certainly more games this year (and less last year) where it looked like Phaneuf was giving the cliched 110% than say, one Jarome Iginla, or one Olli Jokinen. All this talk of Phaneuf taking nights off is lacking reflection on everything we have discussed this year, and the relative efforts of all our “big-dollar-men.”
Dion Phaneuf should not have had to bear the burden of being both the big-scorer and big-defender on this team, and luckily for him, I guess, and for all of those who begged for this trade, it won’t have to be that way.
the tell tale sign for me was in the Hawks game. Im not sure if they showed it on TV but after a whistle Kopecky was giving Dion the business in the corner and he just stood there and took it. I was screaming “Hit him back”!!!! Seems to me he lost that mean streak that made him dangerous
Everytime someone tries to fight him, he probably gets horrifying flashbacks to the time he tripped while challenging Ruutu.
by SmellOfVictory on Feb 1, 2010 2:28 PM PST up reply actions
I think the guy did give his all unfortunately. Playing for Keenan did him in big time. Couple that with the rapid rise to superstar status and celebrity and you have a guy who is giving you 70% when he thinks he’s giving you 100%. Subconsciously the fact he “made it,” probably played heavy into his development and preparation. Then you have the rumors he parties a lot and it lends itself to the fact he probably isn’t mature enough to comprehend why he is sucking wind when he is trying. Face it, after he got the contract and fame, he had nothing to motivate him. Its like those kids whose parents buy them a Porsche for their first car…what the hell do you have to look forward to? Hopefully for him, cause I do like the guy, the pressure and scrutiny in Toronto will get him to re-evaluate his place in the league and he will progress into the player we all were expecting as Flames fans. Apparently, Team Canada didn’t really want to have much to do with him….what do you think that says? As he is right now and with that contract, the only place he belongs is LA…not Anaheim…LA. But their management isn’t so dumb anymore…and probably wouldnt of offered Daz any useful pieces.

Yeah, I agree with that for the most part. If the Flames had gone BSutt first, THEN Keenan, the younger fellas (aka Phaneuf) might’ve been prepared for the whole free-wheeling thing by now. I imagine it depends a lot on the type of player he is, though. For some guys, the contract might be the motivation, but for a lot of them, to quote Heat, “the action is the juice.” I can’t imagine being THAT good at something, with that much potential, and just phoning it in; if you’re in the top 0.01% of hockey players in the world, there’s some solid motivation to make a name for yourself based on your abilities (or at least the stats that come with them) as opposed to just getting a ton of money.
by SmellOfVictory on Feb 1, 2010 2:34 PM PST up reply actions
You see I don’t think the culprit was “phoning it in” because he had a big contract. I think a combo of the quick fame, press, celebrity, and contract made him comfortable mentally and in turn everything adjusted itself accordingly. Something or someone needs to light a fire under his ass…this trade might be it. Obviously it wasn’t going to happen in Calgary, he might become deaf to the Sutter tactics. You know not all of those kids who get Porsches as their first car aren’t hardworkers…they just have a level of comfort to their life and have to dig deeper for motivation. They aren’t always grinding and trying to stay afloat. I see maimster just posted below and talked about the contract…my point isn’t solely about the contract…its about all the outside factors that kind of all seem to happen at once (the contract being one of them) for him.

In that case, I agree entirely. It’s too bad he had those issues in dealing with it (although most people that age would); everytime I think of the stalled development, I think of Crosby, though – very similar situation (minus the celebrity girlfriend), but he handled it with excellence.
by SmellOfVictory on Feb 1, 2010 3:09 PM PST up reply actions
great comparison in that sense with Sid…at that point…it comes down to the human being, their upbringing, and mental makeup. Crosby obviously is a different individual that has processed all of this and made himself better because of it. This difference in personality is what makes him great though. Remember Crosby took a paycut to win…plain and simple, that’s a different type of cat right there.

Any idea what a player would do to get his number once he is traded to a new team. I read that Phaneuf is wearing #3 and Exelby has changed from #3 to #7. Does the team just take the number from Exelby or does Phaneuf “buy” the number from Exelby? If Phaneuf is paying how much does it cost him?
Did you see mckenzie reported that it was suggested to phaneuf that he take number 24 after the TV show? Those people are really something else In leafs land.

From what I’ve heard, numbers tend to be a seniority/reputation thing to a great extent. Since I’ve never even heard of Exelby I’m going to assume he’s not exactly an elite-level player, so when Phaneuf, one of Toronto’s two current ‘franchise’ players came over, he probably straight up offered his number to Phaneuf.
