Iginla Rumors Persist
Regular Hockeybuzz blogger Matthew Barry posted this yesterday:
".. I was told by a member of the press that two sources, one from Canada, claimed that Calgary had offered Jarome Iginla to the Kings in exchange for Brayden Schenn, Andrei Loktionov, Thomas Hickey and the Kings 1st round pick. He also went on to say that this will probably be confirmed by a legitimate Canadian newspaper."
Two thoughts come to mind.
Does anyone actually believe Iginla could be moved? And if he is indeed on the block, is this return acceptable?
I would have to say, yes. But if we do lose our heart and soul it would be one of the toughest things I have ever endured as a Flames fan.
Thoughts all?

Daz has already ruined the team for years to come.
My expectation level and threshold of pain is already so low. This wouldn’t surprise me. The whole Sutter family is what needs to be traded from that organization.

It's all over the place
It’s been on The Hockey News website, Duhatschek speculated on Monday, ESPN said LA was asking, but thinking for the trade deadline. Then, his ice time was reduced somewhat the other night against Detroit, probably in an attempt to give him a chance to play against their bottom feeders – then the speculation started to pick up.
This would represent a complete about face from what they did over the summer. Bringing back Jokinen and Tanguay, hanging on to Staios and Sarich – all in an attempt to give this group one more shot. I advocated a tear down but did not include Iginla in that because I thought ownership would want to see him here to get 1000 pts and 500 goals. I also thought that it would be difficult for teams to commit to 3 years at $7m for a declining asset.
I also was impressed by Iggy last spring when he said he would look at waiving his NTC if ownership approached him. I actually thought that was a shot across the bow of the other guys with NTC’s – maybe it was – maybe no one bit, and Sutter decided to go the veteran route instead of the rebuild.
The return is pretty good – Schenn looks like a certain NHLer; Lotkinov played pro at 19 but is not very big(Langkow sized). Same with Hickey – you’d better have an excellent skill set to play defense at 185 pounds.

Any trade with the Kings must include Justin Azevedo the player. Whether we include Justin Azevedo the blogger is up for negotiation.
Can I swap out Azevedo for Kozun?

Azevedo the blogger would be leaving irregardless.

I would feel much better about a potential Iginla deal, if I got the sense that we were about to embark on a true rebuild. However, using the Phaneuf deal as a baseline…I am scared shitless about our return if we do move him. And if we do move him, who the fuck is this hockey team?

Yeah, everyone knows my stance on this. Its stupid as fuck and I will never cheer for this organization again if that were to happen.

It would take a lot to get my faith back. That’s for damn sure. If I wasn’t a die hard fan, just looking at this team over the last couple years, I would scoff at it while feeling pity. It sucks being on the end of everyone’s joke.

understand
As a kid I was a Leaf fan. Owner Harold Ballard was like Steinbrenner on stupid pills- a loud mouth who ran down his players all the time. Unlike Steinbrenner, Harold was crazy cheap too. The way he treated his coaches and players was abysmal. He ran both Lanny McDonald and Darryl Sittler out of Toronto, to say nothing of how he had treated Mahovolich and Keon before that (and before I was old enough to pay attention). To this day, that’s what the Leafs still mean to me and I can’t cheer for them.
Having said that, I don’t think that Iginla has been or will ever be treated like that, but I would understand your complete disappointment if it were to happen.
This would be a steal for Calgary
So I absolutely support it, since it hurts LA, and of course I want any team that poses an actual threat to the Canucks to be weakened….
/runs away and ducks
Not so sure...
Brayden Schenn is probably two-three years away from being an impact player, given L.A’s depth on defense, the Hickey loss is probably negligible, and Loktionov is a wild card. As for the first, that pick would be 25th and up, I would think. Who knows who the braintrust here will select.
Iginla makes L.A. a legit contender…now. As far as your comment about “actual threat”…we are well aware of the state of our franchise. No need to be a tool.

Hickey isn’t exactly ripping it up in the AHL either.

That trade is quite a deal for the Flames prospect-wise. I love Iggy and want him to retire as a Flame, but this is how teams rebuild. They move valuable assets before the assets depreciate. The Flames have Iggy as a result of trading Nieuwendyk and Regehr as a result of trading Fleury. It takes HUGE guts for a GM to do it and the backlash from the fans can be immense.
That said, Darryl Sutter has positioned this team as good enough to compete for a playoff spot and a reasonable playoff run. It would be admitting defeat pretty early to trade away the team’s best offensive threat with the season not even one quarter complete.

Matchsticks & Gasoline, Sports Opinionated, Pink Shirt Wise Guys: Italian Soccer Podcast & occasionally even Puck Prospectus. Apparently I have commitment problems.
While I’m normally quick to disregard anything from Hockey Buzz, the fact that others are reporting on this too makes it….interesting.
I love Iginla. I’d love to see him retire as a Flame. Hell, even if traded he still might. But the fact is, the franchise comes first for me. If trading Iginla means we get multiple blue-chips plus a 1st rounder and start the rebuild- please: do so. Fact is, I want Calgary to be competitive again and I want Iginla to have a shot at a Cup; the Flames being competitive and Iginla winning a Cup can only coincide if they happen separately. To me, this is a Ray Bourque situation, and that’s how it’ll stay.
If this trade is a real possibility, pull the trigger. Pull it hard.
Im late to this party, but I want to say that Schenn for Iggy is a terrible deal. This team, if it trades Iggy, and you can go to Domebeers.com to see my thoughts on the matter, needs to get a forward back, not a dman.
Media members read Domebeers for some reason (probably the excellent writing) and I was emailing them about this (and no, it wasnt P Stein), and they wrote back to me a bunch of ‘off the record stuff’, about how Elliot Friedmans coloumn was closer to fact than fiction. I still dont know, it sounds to me like a bunch of media members came up with this trade and are peddling it themselves. Again, Brayden Schenn? Why? We need a forward and a draft pick higher than 25+.
dude
Brayden Schenn is a forward. A centre to be precise. 99 point in 59 games in the WHL last year. 19pts in 15 playoff games. The proposed deal also included Lotkinov – also a centre.
So, sorry if that sounded snarky – I agree with you – quality forward prospects would absolutely be neccesary.
Yep
Reminds me of a smaller version of Ryan Getzlaf from watching him in the dub. Big fan.

I was thinking Maple Leafs. Now that I get off my arse and look, it appears he is a forward…
Suddenly, I become more open to this move.

Other suitors...
So, if we do move our beloved captain, who else would have the cap room/assets to make a deal like this work.
On first blush, I can maybe see Philly (assuming Carter involved for cap reasons and I would love to see him there if he has to go anywhere), St. Louis, L.A. as possible front-runners.
A few wild-cards though maybe. Carolina has a lot of young talent in the system and aside from Staal/Ward don’t have a lot of money tied up…internal cap may prevent a move like this though. Nashville maybe as well. A Colin Wilson/Jon Blum/rights to Radulov package would interest me.
All kind of pie in the sky stuff…but interesting nonetheless, to me anyhoo. Anyone else have some ideas/possible fits?
