Former Flame prospect Ryder runs afoul of the law
The troubled younger brother of the Bruins' Michael Ryder is in custody on armed robbery charges. He surrendered to the RCMP in Newfoundland Wednesday. The charge is related to the robbery of a convenience store in Bonavista, and a psychiatric evaluation is pending for the 22 year old.

I’ve always wanted to use this
But I know that Dan Ryder has had some serious issues I remember listening to the Overtime on the Fan last season and a caller called in asking Rob Kerr about Dan Ryder and Kerr really didn’t want to get into it.
30 years of the NHL's Best Hockey, It got us through some tough times.
You know on tomorrow’s telecast, Loubardias will be talking about this: “And Ryder, who is from Adam Pardy’s home of Bonavista, Newfoundland, is in great legal trouble…”
Really sad story. It’s always strange enough when a player just loses the heart for the game, but it happens. To see how far he’s fallen though is rather scary. Definitely sounds like the kid needed help and either couldn’t seek it out, or didn’t have anyone capable of pushing him in the right direction.
“Hey, that’s where Adam Pardy’s from!” was totally the first thought that popped into my head as well.
This is such a sad story and really speaks to professional sports’ and society’s attitude towards mental illness. I sincerely hope he gets the help he needs.
I don’t know if it speaks to people’s attitudes towards mental illness or not. As of right now, we have no idea what his issues are or what led him down this path.
well put Kent…personally i didn’t jump on the mental illness aspect…to an extent that’s a lot of legal jargon…sick or not, people have to own up for their actions. i’ve noticed recently that always giving these athletes excuses inhibits the problems that arise.

At this point, it’s hard to argue Ryder as being an athlete. He’s been out of hockey for nearly a year now.
What I meant is the excuses people probably made for him his whole life that that ignored his issues (whatever they may be) led to his meltdown. Those excuses occurred well before he stopped playing hockey. And he was probably cut lots of breaks before because he was a standout athlete which can create a monster in some.

i suppose on second glance, i could concede that telling the court your client “doesn’t believe {he} understands what is happening to him” is the simplest defense in such a situation. of course, i presume that the lawyer would have to back it up, somehow….
regardless, armed robbery, using a disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence, using a firearm in the commission of an offence and theft of less than $5,000 all adds up to the actions of a troubled dude…. end of story.

Yeah, that defense could mean almost anything in the courts. Hell Eric Tillman just got off with that sort fo justification because he was on back medication.
How bad does your life have to get if you’re resorting to robbing a convenience store?

Where is Michael and the parents in all of this?

I’ve been wondering the same thing. They’ve been silent since his troubles began a few years back. Since there are now legal issues involved it’s understandable that they’d want to keep relatively quiet, but it wouldn’t hurt to clear the air regarding Daniel’s condition, nevermind defending their kid/brother. I suppose any claims to mental illness are pure speculation at the moment, but if there is some truth to it it’s hard to deny that whatever is plaguing him has been swept under the rug by professional hockey and the Ryder family despite past incidents and rumour. This is kind of what I was referring to when I was talking about attitudes towards mental illness. That being said, I don’t know what the nature of the relationship is. These kind of issues put loads of stress on a family.
