The last thread crashed my brand new computer. Luckily I am a nerd and have more than one, so I can carry on uninterrupted!

haha! Good news…

we’re at about 1000 views per hour right now, so I’m glad the network has good servers.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

I wonder why everyone is coming here? Word must be spreading on yours and Robert’s good work!

by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 31, 2010 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

The Network does a great job of getting links and such out there. Plus, I think Calgarypuck is down.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 9:00 PM PST up reply actions

Oh hell, it wasn’t like these trades made any difference. That excellent post yesterday on what would happen if the Flames lost to Edmonton was what opened the floodgates. ;)

by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 31, 2010 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

Kudos to ya for staying on top of this

Sounds like Rob Kerr is signing off the radio station. Hehehe, “you can take the rest of the night off, Rob”

Hell, stuff like this is why blogging is fun. This and bitching incessantly.

Thanks for the spillover, my computer was melting down too

by Ken Williams on Jan 31, 2010 8:56 PM PST reply actions

fyi: when you broke the last thread (the dion trade) i was over there by myself wondering where everybody went. :)

by walkinvisible on Jan 31, 2010 8:58 PM PST reply actions

Oh, sure! I go and post my wittiest post of the night and you close the other thread right on top of it! ;)

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 8:58 PM PST reply actions

Well, now well all know about it and people can check it out…

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

So, what’s the coles notes version if we end up with Kovi?

Also, is there anyone else on the Rangers who fits the bill if the NTC is what is holding things up?

by Subversive on Jan 31, 2010 8:59 PM PST reply actions

Coles notes on the rumor:

Kotalik+Moss+other for Kovalchuk.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 9:01 PM PST up reply actions

Truly a very nervous time to be a fan of this franchise.

Basically a Jokinen for Kotalik trade is on the surface, trading a half a year of piss-poor sub-standard NHL forward-ing for two and a half years of the same.

If Sutter converts that into something worth anything on an NHL roster… then he’s either the luckiest son of a bitch ever or he’s figured out some grotesque inefficiency in the NHL trade market that has heretofore not been capitalized upon.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 9:01 PM PST reply actions

I have to believe that if Calgary is holding up the trade, it is because we can’t quite convince someone else to take him yet.

The most logical assumption from what’s been said tonight is that Kotalik will never wear Flames silks, one way or another.

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

All I can say is if Joker does end up going that’s 5.25 Mill off and bringing on 5.25 Mill?

Where even Dion Phaneuf can get traded. So don't think your untouchable.

by CofRed on Jan 31, 2010 9:01 PM PST reply actions

By the way, I had a dream last night that sent Phaneuf and Bourque and Backlund to Columbus for Nash.

Now I’m not a fan of Nash’s upcoming contract even though I think among the “long terms” it’s one of the lesser scale of high-risk. But surely that trade would’ve been better than what would transpire if this Kotalik trade goes through and nothing else happnes afterwards.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 9:02 PM PST reply actions

And of course I realize that it’s a pipe dream to begin with.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

a little shocked on today

Can someone give me a quick primer on Flames fans reactions on the days trades and what lies ahead for them (i.e. Kovalchuk?)? Thanks…

I’m pretty sure the Flames just got a lot better, which isn’t good for Nashville at all….

The six stages of grief for fans: Anger, denial, bargaining, depression, acceptance, unrealistic hope.

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

I think the Dion trade has gotten some mixed reactions, but Calgary got three NHLers for one. I think the fear is that Dion becomes a real number one Dman, and then you’ve basically traded a dollar for three quarters, which is never good.

This other stuff? Ask me again when it all shakes out. Kovalchuk is an all or nothing play, IMO.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 31, 2010 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

in short: we don’t like the Kotalik deal if it stands alone, even though we none of us are fond of Jokinen.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

So I’m watching Futurama right now (the episode where Fry blows up the giant brain), and I just got to the point where the brains says to Fry “A quantum interface bomb- are you insane in the membrane?”

If this doesn’t work out, someone should’ve said that to Darryl. He’s hitting the Flames with a quantum interface bomb.

BTW, I’m not a writer, or even a wannabe blogger (well, maybe lol). I was asked if I’d do game summary’s and decided it might be fun (which is why I try and keep it fun & light-hearted – Ken Williams). I didn’t even read blogs all that much a year ago, but this has been a frequent stop on my list in the past 6 months or so.

kotalik

Looks like its a Limited no trade clause. We’ll see what that means

by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 31, 2010 9:07 PM PST reply actions

Typically means he has a list of teams that the Rangers can’t trade him to.

Basically, Edmonton and a couple other places he doesn’t like.

why in the fuck does he have a NTC. Jesus murphy

by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 31, 2010 9:10 PM PST up reply actions

I wonder what that implies. Maybe he submitted a list the day he signed the deal? I don’t get it

by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 31, 2010 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

and maybe the reason it’s not totally dead is that if you circumvent the calgary bit, atlanta would be fine ?

Sean: So, you’re telling me you’re behind all of this and not Daz?
Elisha: Yep. It’s been 2 years in the making and you almost ruined it all with that sloppy seconds comment.
Sean: Well thanks for getting Daz to go after Kotalik. That guy sucks. I heard the Joker is pure entertainment!

That would be good for the Flyers. We have this consistency issue. Maybe you’ve heard about it.

Good on the Flames for taking some big risks to (hopefully) improve the team. But at least you’ve gotten some offers you can live with, like 3 NHLers for one (as opposed to, say, Mike Smith for Claude Giroux).

What’s the consensus here – is there a plan?

Kent and Res and RC think there’s a trade after the Kotalik one. I remain unconvinced, Kotalik is a shiny dime in the Jokinen mold.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 9:48 PM PST reply actions

i just don’t know if i think that daz (and the daz hubris) would trade a first round pick, and then turn around and trade that guy for kotalik. it seems…. wrong. even for a gm.

by walkinvisible on Jan 31, 2010 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

There has to be a plan. the shine has been off Kotalik for awhile. Plus there’s simply too many bodies in town.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

too many bodies is another reason i think there will be more action. though technically we’re fine right now until guys come off of IR (if we ship backs back to abby)

by walkinvisible on Jan 31, 2010 9:50 PM PST up reply actions

With three on IR, everyone can stay for now. 14 (17-3) F 7 D 2 G = 23

by Robert Cleave on Jan 31, 2010 9:51 PM PST up reply actions

I would not be surprised if Conny stays on the IR for the rest of the year.

by Justin Azevedo 2 on Jan 31, 2010 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, we discussed that earlier.

by walkinvisible on Jan 31, 2010 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

I wasn’t sure if that had been mentioned in this thread.

by Justin Azevedo 2 on Jan 31, 2010 9:56 PM PST up reply actions

Like I said above, if it was that simple, then it would be done by now. Plus, something like this pretty much negates any cap room that could be use to sign the guys we picked up earlier.

by Justin Azevedo 2 on Jan 31, 2010 9:50 PM PST up reply actions

I hope there’s a plan. Saying I’m absolutely counting on it? Maybe not. I know if they make that move they need to dispense with 3 forwards other than Backlund tout de suite.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 31, 2010 9:50 PM PST up reply actions

technically, bob, they’re fine right now. even with backlund on the big club.

The ONLY things Kotalik bring are the PP point shot and some shootout wizardry. 2 more years @ 3mil – no thanks. Maybe its wishful thinking that another deal occurs right after, but I sure don’t like the idea of adding that contract to the mix.

by RossCreek on Jan 31, 2010 9:51 PM PST up reply actions

There definitely has to be a trade to get rid of players but I mean more in the “vision” aspect of it – what type of role is Sutter trying to fill? First line rental scorer? Long term difference maker?

If he is really going for Kovalchuk then at least that’s a plan. A stupid plan but nonetheless there is direction.

Acquiring Kotalik is just adding headache for the sake of it, no direction there.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

Why waste Joki’s 5M opening by filling 60% of it with Kotalik? Especially with Bourque and likely White (No idea on what Stajan will do) needing pay raises?

by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 31, 2010 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

The “why” is a good question, the reason it needs serious answering though is because the exact same question could have been asked of the Jokinen trade last season.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

He at least had the appearance of a useful player via counting stats. Not so with Kotalik.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

I understood the Joker move as part of a coherent, if flawed, philosophy. Sutter wanted a big scorer down the middle. Joker kinda had history in that role, but not against good players. That’s a misjudgment of his ability, but the premise wasn’t totally wrong.

Kotalik, on the other hand, fills no role on the team. You can’t even dress that up.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 31, 2010 10:01 PM PST up reply actions

Well at least Sutter is basically admitting it was a bad idea. I was suprised when he said that its not a good strategy in his presser to overload with high priced stars while cutting decent depth

by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 31, 2010 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

Well, things better unfold quickly cause they’ll want this madness sorteed before the Flyers game and these guys gotta get on planes. (That’s assuming the GM’s had an agreement)

by LawrenceS on Jan 31, 2010 9:52 PM PST reply actions

well the thing i find interesting is that “trades like this aren’t reactionary” and have been going down for days. which makes me wonder why either GM would want this to go into tomorrow.

Robert, I was wondering how a Jets fan like you gets turned into a Calgary fan and not a Phoenix or Edmonton fan?

by Justin Azevedo 2 on Jan 31, 2010 10:31 PM PST up reply actions

Ah.

Well, the second the Jets left, I quit caring about that organization. I don’t hate the Coyotes, I’m just completely indifferent to their fate.

As for the Oilers, I hated them back in the 80’s. The fact that they killed the Jets all the time might well have factored in to that ;-), but still, I couldn’t stand them. When the Flames and Oilers met in the playoffs after the Jets were eliminated in those days, well, I wouldn’t have cheered for those greasy fuckers if hell froze over. The Flames were always my second choice team. I mean, how could I hate a team that the Jets were able to beat in the playoffs, right? So it was a bit by default, but here we are.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 31, 2010 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

Ah. My Uncle, who lives in Winnipeg, is a Jets fan who now cheers for the Yotes, so I was just wondering.

by Justin Azevedo 2 on Jan 31, 2010 10:42 PM PST up reply actions

There are still some people who go that route, but there’s a mix teams that get support now. I think there are a few folks that hate the Coyotes outright, although that may be just as a placeholder for their dislike of the Commissioner.

It’s pretty funny that we’re playing Philly after a major trade. Remember last year how Jokinen scored 2 goals against them in his first game as a Flame?

I think CP literally exploded, there were so many of those asinine “jiz in my pants” pictures. Not that I don’t enjoy that sort of comedy (the song is brilliant) but the level of stupid in Flames fandom that night was off the charts.

Also I am now listening to Eric Duhatschek’s interview on the FAN (recorded earlier). I’ve seen him get praise being cutting edge or a good hockey eye or whatever but damn the dude does not know what he is talking about, not in the fucking least.

Especially when he talks about “serviceable NHLers”, I don’t think he knows what the term means. Not that I think that the forwards we got tonight are necessarily more than that but the Hat does not know what either “servicable” or “NHLer” means.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 10:51 PM PST reply actions

It depends how well Stajan does, and how much development he still has left. White and Gio are one and the same, at least on the surface, so I wont worry about him, and Hagman is established as the vet who gets you 25-30 goals. And Meyers is garbage, so we don’t really even have to include him. I think all three will do well, just not as well as Dion will.

I like Stajan and Hagman actually. I mean they don’t wow me but I think their legit top sixers in the same vein as Langkow. Hope Sutter keeps them actually.

It’s not really about the individual players but the language the Hat is using. He’s talking Norris trophies and free agency. The first illustrates a gross misunderstanding of how hockey games are won, the second illustrates a gross misunderstanding of how hockey business is conducted.

And the above is simple stuff, at least the language of it is.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

If you asked me what The Hat’s M.O. is, it would be representing what passes for the serious side of the conventional wisdom in the MSM. He’s not a public buffoon like some of the TV guys, but if you’re looking for hockey’s version of Joe Posnanski, it’s not him. He’s a good reporter on the general zeitgeist of the league.

As for serviceable NHLers, I doubt that a few GMs could explain the concept of “replacement level”, so my expectations of the press aren’t all that high.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 31, 2010 11:02 PM PST up reply actions

That’s fair. I can’t even think of a guy who delves into hockey truth in Canadian hockey MSM, maybe Ron MacLean will reference MC every now and then but that’s not asking the questions, and IMO asking the questions is just as important as finding the answers.

These MSM guys are failing us tonight though. Aren’t they supposed to have connections? That’s what they’re good for. All we have on this Kotalik thing is contradicting rumors.

by R O on Jan 31, 2010 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I’m surprised that the Joker trade went public, but from how things seem to work, if an organization is a bit leaky, and I think the Rags qualify on that score, stuff like this happens where somebody might jump the gun. It shouldn’t, but it does, and the Heatley deal was exhibit A. That doesn’t absolve the media guys, btw. They still have to do things correctly.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 31, 2010 11:13 PM PST up reply actions

And I’m out. Tomorrow is definitely another day. Don’t blow the place up.

So I got in from my 8 hour travel day to SF today about 2 hours ago and just now finished catching up on the Jokinen/Kotalik business.

Totally off topic: I have just realized that the Avs have lost three in a row. Are they not getting timely goals and working their ass off defensively anymore?

They are just back to the drawing board. Apparently Sutter DOES want to get rid of Jokinen.

No clue why… ;)

Dregers morning Twitter says no one knows why the Flames are now stalling the trade.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 1, 2010 6:53 AM PST reply actions

cause its a bad trade and the owners just got wind of it. their memo to daz: hiring keenan is one thing, but there is no way we you are keeping your job because we have to evaluate a joke/prust for kotalik/higgins trade in the next season.

You know, repeating the same thing over and over and over gets tiring in a hurry.

You don’t like Sutter. We get it.

by Resolute on Feb 1, 2010 7:10 AM PST up reply actions

Peter Marher was on Lite96 this morning and mentions two things he is hearing for the stall:

1. Kotalik has given the Rangers a list of three teams he’d accept a trade to, and Calgary isn’t one of them.
2. The Flames are apparently asking for more in return.

by Resolute on Feb 1, 2010 7:09 AM PST reply actions

ok…so that means there isn’t something bigger coming. he’s simply trying to move the joker and his contract and get a decent return.

ps. i don’t dislike Sutter…im just sick of the fact that everytime he might be canned, he makes some bold move to save his job it seems. what happens if all of this doesn’t pan out and the flames don’t make the playoffs?

I still think its crazy Slats gave Kotalik a NMC.

by KingJafi on Feb 1, 2010 7:21 AM PST up reply actions

Frankly, I don’t think he has once made a move to save himself from getting canned. I also don’t think he has ever come close to being fired in the first place. For better or for worse, his big moves have been made to try and push this team deep into the playoffs. Unfortunately, they haven’t worked yet, for various reasons.

And the Flames asking for more could still mean something bigger is coming. Something else definitely is coming yet because of the number of bodies we have, but asking for more now could be the result of team #3 asking for more themselves. Dreger is reporting that there might be a third team involved in this all of a sudden.

by Resolute on Feb 1, 2010 7:28 AM PST up reply actions

fair enough, i might be a little more critical than deserved but i personally think the only time he’s been close to being fired was last summer…and he saved it all by getting his brother to come and coach and the bouwmeester signing also helped a lot.

Another issue may be Kotlik’s NMC – if Sutter wants to flip him, he’ll probably want assurances that he’ll waive it again.

by Kent Wilson on Feb 1, 2010 7:28 AM PST reply actions

MacKenzie now says that the deal won’t be done today and may not com to fruition at all.

I had the worst dream ever last night.

The Flames dealt a bad hockeyplayer with an expiring contract for an even worse player that is signed for 2 more years.

In social news, former Oilers winger Joffrey Lupul, recuperating from back surgery in Anaheim, is very cosy these days with 2008 Playboy Playmate of the Year, Canadian-born Jayde Nicole, who used to be with Bruce Jenner’s kid Brody. Nicole is from Scarborough, Ont.

From Jim Matheson (Edmonton Journal)

Yesterday’s paper before the Flames deal(s)…
Guess we were wrong to bang the drums for Ales Kotalik here, ragging on the Oilers for not going harder to keep the free-agent winger. The Rangers, who gave him a three-year, $9-million deal, sat him out six straight games. He’s reverted to how he played in Buffalo before coming to the Oilers. The spirit doesn’t move Kotalik enough. Heavy shot from the point on the power play, excellent in shootouts, not so good elsewhere.

by RossCreek on Feb 1, 2010 7:45 AM PST reply actions

“no one seems to know why Calgary is stalling on the Jokinen trade. has a 3rd team surfaced?”

From Dreger. Hopefully that third team is Atlanta.

by Justin Azevedo 2 on Feb 1, 2010 8:25 AM PST reply actions

Don't see Sutter ripping his team apart trying to get a Euro who hasn't played with Iggy.

What I do see is the Flames going hard after Lecavalier or Carter……Past experience with Iggy, both playmakers as opposed to a one man team in Kovalchuk…….Sarich used to play for TBay, anyone think a package including Sarich gets sent to Tampa for Lecavalier? Just trying to make some sense out of all this………..

by dotfras on Feb 1, 2010 9:55 AM PST reply actions

I think we all agree that this trade dosent happen if its not part of a larger deal. It’s just Kotalik’s NMC is screwing stuff up right now.
