Phaneuf, Sjostrom, Aulie dealt to Toronto for Stajan, Hagman, Mayers, White

Per TSN

Phaneuf, Sjostrom and Aulie to Toronto. Not sure on the return yet.  Heard speculation of Kaberle, Stajan and Kadri.  Heard speculation of a three way with Anaheim (Toronto also got Giguere).   I hope it is the three-way and we got something from Anaheim, because Toronto has very, very little that I find appealing.  Of course, it isn't like TSN or anyone out east cares what Calgary got, so we don't know yet.

Shocked, to say the least.

the Calgary Flames have shipped defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Iab White.

Well, that’s one way to upgrade your offence, I guess. Nicklas Hagman’s a good player, at least in the counting-numbers, fantasy-hockey sense. I don’t watch Leafs games — they give me hives — so I don’t know beyond that.

Seriously. I hope Sutter loses his fucking job.
-Ian White is a d-man who, like Gio, is highly underrated and has great underlying stats.
The good stops there.

We just traded a franchise d-man, one of our best penalty killers and a great prospect for ANOTHER washed-up grinder, and two second liners who have expiring contracts. Seriously. How many second-line players do we have now? 6? And it STILL dosen’t shore up our problems-backup goalie and first liner for Iggy to play with.

This is a far lesser return that I imagine when I advocated moving Dion. Hagman and Stajan are decent enough players, but they fact that they aren’t even signed through next year…

Mayers is also useless. White is decent enough defender and I like the way he’s shaping up…but…

Sjostrom is no big loss. I don’t think Aulie is either.

Hagman and White

are the two main parts of this deal coming from Toronto.

Hagman was actually NOT playing that much with Kessel, nevermind that Kessel is a scorer first and a playmaker second. Hagman is a solid guy who can and will score around 25 goals every year.

White is a solid top 4 d-man who plays his heart out every shift. You will love him.

great trade

I’’m going to go against the grain here and say that this is a good trade for the Flames (and the Leafs). Stajan and White are solid players with a lot of potential. Hagman basically IS Sjostrom with a little more scoring touch, and Mayers is a wild card with promise. All are offensive players, and this is a team that needs offense in a serious way. Phaneuf was a great character and is a solid d-man, but with Giordano, Regehr, and Bouwmeester, it’s not like the Flames are hurting on the back end. Giordano and White are both better offensive d-men than Phaneuf, so we’re not really losing anything.

by remotedevice on Jan 31, 2010 9:54 AM PST reply actions

Ehhhh… Stajan is a perfectly acceptable 3rd line centre (with offensive upside) on almost any team. White is definitely a solid top 4 d-man, he plays his heart out every shift and you will be VERY happy with him. Hagman is a solid second liner who will pot ~25 goals every year… Mayers is basically useless.

by Huey2k2 on Jan 31, 2010 9:57 AM PST up reply actions

I wouldn’t call Mayers a wild card with promise. I would call him another useless 4th liner that’s taking a spot away from a young guy.

This isn’t directed at you specifically, but I do find it comical that so many people were trashing Phaneuf all year long, and so many wanted him dealt, and yet they are all pissed today that they got what they wanted.

What were they expecting? Sidney Crosby for a “terrible, lazy, stupid, selfish defenceman who can’t score, hit the net or play defence anymore”?

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 10:07 AM PST up reply actions

Let’s not generalize here. I know a lot of folks who were reluctant to trade Dion whenever is was mentioned. They may be the same folks who are lamenting the trade now.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 31, 2010 10:09 AM PST up reply actions

Oh, no doubt. I have a few people in mind (not here, mind you) that I am thinking of when I state that.

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 10:10 AM PST up reply actions

i, for one, have come to terms with it. rumour was that dion has had fistfights with iginla and bourque in the past month. it’s well documented that reggie HATED him (infact, dowbiggen just talked about this on the radio). he was lazy on the ice and his offensive productivity was more or less gone. buh-bye.

“hagman is solid,” said my huge leafs fan buddy. stajan is a solid two-way guy, and ian white is a cheap minute-eating defenseman who, realistically, is better than dion and 5 million dollars cheaper. RFA means he’s sign-able. our top 4 got a lot stronger with this dude.

it’s a shock to see one of your core guys out the door, and i’m sad for all those folks with #3 jerseys, but if you sit back and think about it we got a couple of decent players and a whole lotta cap space for an underperforming 6.5 million dollar “semi-roving” blueliner.

For the record…I didn’t want him gone. Never suggested it. Was one of my favorite players on the team. Though I won’t hide the fact I wanted Elisha gone. And I was of the opinion that if they did trade such a marketable NHL guy that they get something significant offensively to appease fans. But cap room is fine as well I guess, if that leads to a nice signing. I’m going to keep referring to this trade as a reset on button on the Phaneuf contract.

Go Flames Go

by Justin Azevedo on Jan 31, 2010 10:12 AM PST up reply actions

I like it!

In all honesty guys Im Remotedevice on this. I think this trade is what both teams need and am surprised by the reaction. Phaneuf is not a star and will not be. White has more points this year than phaneuf all on toronto. He was a bust they needed to rid him of his salary too.

All players are signable and sutter can choose who he wants to at the end of the year. (all wont be resigned)

I think i really like it because this trade doesnt put all of the eggs in one basket. the trade for jokinen was a terrible trade because he failed and there were no redeeming factors to it. Say hagman sucks, stajan may not. Mayers will suck, white will not.

I also think this is a big big addition by subtraction. Regher should be much better with white by his side. If not guess whos next to go?

Sarich wont go until the offseason now but he will go too. They would be spreading themselves much to thin on the back end if sarich goes next

by Brent G. on Jan 31, 2010 10:10 AM PST reply actions

Regehr has an NMC, I believe, so he isn’t going anywhere.

As far as Phaneuf not being a star goes, he’s 24 years old and has two all-star game appearances and a Norris nomination. He still has franchise calibre potential, which is why people are unnerved by the return. If he never gets back on track, then yeah, we did well on the trade. But if the Leafs can get him back on the path he had his first three seasons – especially in the soft Eastern Conference – this trade will look baaaaaaad.

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 10:12 AM PST up reply actions

It happens both ways though, just part of the gamble of making trades.

-Colin

by Colin S on Jan 31, 2010 10:13 AM PST up reply actions

Because I don’t make a habit of assuming the future is set in stone. Sometimes a guy just gets it. Toronto might have a coach that manages to make the light bulb go on for him. Or, he might well simply stagnate.

But Phaneuf is just 24. He is not at the end of his development path.

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 10:20 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed, certainly the risk is that Phaneuf will ‘get it’ in Toronto. But, so what, really. He wasn’t getting it here and there wasn’t enough evidence that he wouldn’t get it without a change of scenery. (Oops, triple negative there!). Anyway, I hope he makes it in Toronto, honestly. I certainly don’t hate him. But, I’m still glad he’s not here.

Better than a rental

I think this is preferable to other rumours I’ve been hearing, like Regehr for Kovalchuk. Rentals are for teams who have a pretty good chance of making a deep playoff run, not for teams who have problems with their core.

I was at a wine tasting thing last night for One Yellow Rabbit and I overheard some guy talking about how many goals Hagman scores, blah blah blah. I figured it was Leafs fan blustering, but maybe he had advance information! Guess I should’ve chatted him up…

In any case, I went on to discuss Hagman with my buddy and we both agreed that yeah, he’s a good player to have around to anchor the second line, but only on a team that has something resembling a first line, i.e. not the Leafs. What remains to be seen: will he land on the top line here?

I dont think they CAN do it sooner. Hes overpaid and everything but at the same time they should trade him for a forward but by doing that they are too weak defensively then. Sarich is still marginally better than johnson…

by Resolute on Jan 31, 2010 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Before reading all the comments, I just have to say I really like this. I’ve said enough about Phaneuf already, but I think WHite and Hagman are both solid or better and this is addition by subtraction. The fact that Sutter was willing to trade Phaneuf is all you need to know. Phaneuf is Jovanoski, version 2.0. He was not necessary on this Flames roster, White will fit in his slot just as well, and Hagman is underrated.

I admit, now that I’ve wanted this a while that since it’s happened, I guess it’s time for the instincts to be proven. If Phaneuf becomes a superstar, than so be it. Still, I think this doesn’t hurt the Flames this year and gives them more flexibility going forward.

by maimster on Jan 31, 2010 10:33 AM PST reply actions

Phaneuf is Jovanoski, version 2.0.

I agree with this. He’ll wow you with his talent at times and occasionally put a few great games together and then his brain will kick in and he’ll start thinking again and everything goes to hell.

Phaneuf right now is three times the player Jovanovski was at his peak. While he certainly has not consistently lived up to the hype, lets not sell Phaneuf short here.

Next people will be comparing him to Derek Morris…

I do believe Hagman can do well and thankfully he’s signed up, Stajan has a massive up swing but I still rather have Bourque then him. Ian White very solid and should fit right in and once Sarich is dealt even more so.

Whos to say white coming here wont be a huge mistake from their stand point. I look at phaneuf as a very good top 4 defender getting #1 money. This gives a good opportunity for a do over to sign white to a reasonable contract respective of who he is. white is a top 4 defender but not as good but they dont need him to be. Buow replaces phaneuf

Ok, my thoughts…

1: This is a shitty return for Dion Phaneaf, must be a locker-room problem. I genuinely like Hagman, Stajan and White though and this does give us way more depth at forward.

2: I’m going to be collecting a lot of “I told you so’s” today from folk who insisted that Phaneaf would never be dealt.

3: I’d rather we had kept Aulie. I mean it’s not like it’s due to a roster slot or cap reasons… yuck, means we had to sweeten the deal to get it done.

4: More moves must be forthcoming. Either waiver moves or trades cause once Conroy, Moss and Dawes get healthy we’re way overloaded at forward.

5: We couldn’t have gotten the big Ukrainian?

6: Toronto is now really thin up front.
