Battle of Alberta Game Day - Toilet Bowl
Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers
Pengrowth Saddledome
8pm MT
TV: CBC (HD)
Opposition: Copper and Blue
Well, here were are. Game days between the two Alberta rivals have been drained of meaning for some time. The delta between the two clubs has been large enough to make the outcome either foregone or meaningless (beyond bragging rights naturally) with Calgary the usual victors.
However, with the Flames and Oilers combining for precisely one win in the month of January, the stakes have been raised perilously high. Nothing is truly proven in a single regular season contest in the NHL, but the 09-10 narratives surrounding each organization will likely be built around whatever happens in the 'Dome this evening. That will certainly be the case for the Flames and the suddenly embattled Darryl Sutter. For perhaps the first time during his reign, serious rumblings of dissatisfaction with his efforts are starting to roll through town, with the added murmurs of a divided dressing room, unhappy players and a need to "shake up an environment" that may be anything from stale to outright poisonous.
I don't usually give breath to rumors of clashing personalities or dressing room mutiny. Partially because they are often merely hearsay and conjecture; ad hoc explanations for the struggles of a team when, usually, a much more banal explanation is obvious (bad bounces, bad roster, etc.). In Philadelphia, they talked of the "inappropriate" night life of the younger players. Ditto in Montreal, except with the added "gangsta connnections!" bonus. In Calgary, the dour expressions of the ruling brothers grim, as well as the blank, robot-like manner in which the players go about their business both on-and-off the ice may have given rise to the growing chorus of accusations of a souring atmosphere. Of course, failing to score goals and losing a bunch of games in a row is enough to put any NHL athlete in a poor mood, especially while operating under the burden of high expectations and daily scrutiny. It's certainly possible that more is going on behind the scenes that were aren't privy to, and that those issues are currently contributing to or exacerbating the Flames struggles this season. it's also possible that, even assuming the issues are in fact a reality, that a winning streak would cure the depression.
What can't be avoided, though, is the potential fall-out should the Flames lose tonight. Even if Calgary outplays the Oilers, but is jobbed by bounces or officiating; even if the scoreboard falls on the starting line-up during the anthem and the Flames are forced to play with their scrubs and back-up goalie all night. There's no outcome nor circumstance that will assuage the outrage should the Flames lose their 10th in a row to the hated Edmonton Oilers, they who boast the worst record in the league and are the only team currently colder than the Flames. Make no mistake, the city will explode in a fit of lunatic anger should the unthinkable happen. Sutter will have to flee to a panic room in the bowels of the 'Dome and reside there, desperate and alone like Hitler during his last days. Effigys will be burnt while player jerseys are tossed in the garbage in disgust. The disappointment will mint new alcoholics, women will lose faith in their husbands, husbands will seek the cold comfort of either isolation or nameless barroom mistresses. Men in suits will fling themselves off of tall buildings while some bearded juice drinker will point a rigid, accusing finger at "climate change". And, worst of all, Canucks fans will cackle in amusement from their perch atop the NW division. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Saddledome immediately imploded in noisy, Poltergeistian fashion if the visitors score is higher at the end of the night.
Someone's for the chop if the Flames lose this evening. Someone significant. Bank on it.
One way or the other, this should prove to be very, very interesting Battle of Alberta.

The line is -220 Calgary, so I feel good. Not as good as if we were facing the Avs but similarly good.
You’re right on the need for a win though, public opinion towards a double-digit losing streak would not be good. I’ll still root for them though, nothing you can do about a game that you dominate but get beat by bad bounces.
One step at a time though, domination first.
And I might be the only guy who’ll be unhappy with a lucky win tonight. Y’know what I mean?
Side note: I’m going to be cheering as hard as I ever have for a Leafs regulation win tonight.
It helps that I was a pretty big fan of the Sundin-CuJo Leafs in the late 90s playoffs (y’know… when the Flames weren’t playing games, sigh)
But yeah, 0-14-0 for the Canucks wouldn’t even begin to be karmic justice for those fuckers. That would show them for robbing us blind of the division last year, led by that crybaby assfuck Alexie Burrows. “Stealing points” my ass, that guy’s stolen more points from deserving teams than Stephane Auger ever will from the Canucks.
Up by two only a few minutes in? Vancouver looks totally flat, especially considering the Leafs played last night. I’ll cross my fingers and hope it lasts.
Go fuck yourself Vancouver.
Phew. Glad I got that off my chest.

Flames seem closer
The team seems closer to breaking out of their slump. Until this last losing streak Calgary would win a few and then lose a close one by one goal usually. After the San Jose thrashing the Flame’s confidence waned considerably. If they win I hope they return to their old selves and start putting winning streaks together. The bright side is the call-up of Backlund and the line juggling. My idea of a number one line is Borque, Langkow, and Iginla-which seems like a no-brainer-but the Jokinen-Iginla pairing remains. Jokinen should centre the second line with Glencross and Dawes-or Lundmark. Moss? Whats happened to Moss? Is he hurt? Playing through injury? Anyone have some ideas for new lines? I think we should try to find a player to gel with Jokinen at the trade deadline if he is destined to stay-his stats aren’t horrible-but the chemistry? The Brothers Grim could learn from the Finn’s who like to Brood-they are a dead-pan group-Kirpusoff is a great goalie because he isn’t flustered easily-he shakes things off and has Brooding concentration. Sure the team lacks personality-we need a Eddie Shack type-Fleury would have at least injected enthusiasm into this listless group of Buzz-kills. Maybe the Sutter’s should hire a Beautiful trainer to perk up the morale-not to appear sexist or anything-but do something to inject some life into this bunch. Maybe the fans at the Dome can try over the top antics to spark the team. Make some noise!! Get involved!!!
this flames central place is pretty cool
Bummer it’s filled with flames fans :)
Gonna be a good night folks.

Damn was Samuelsson a grotesque diver in Detroit too? Or is the diving culture in the VAN organization just infectious?
not really
Notorious for missing the net, but he wasn’t much of a diver at all.

Oh my gosh, the puck just bounced off the stick of the League’s Leading Scorer Henrik Sedin™ when he was in a scoring area, instead of being right of his tape and in the net.
Did not know this could ever happen.
Two horrible calls. Dive by Samuelsson followed by Sedin holding the stick called as hooking instead.
Called for the slash afterward. Legit.

Well of course the Laughs can’t keep a lead and leave Kipper’s BFF to hang out to dry.
And Sedin’s-Burrows in not the best line in hockey.
At least it's not 97-98.
The goddamn Sedin sisters strike again.

Haha I was thinking that every time he said it (which was at about 30 second intervals). I would say they’re one of the better ones, though. Soft minutes or not, they know what they’re doing and they play well together; I’d say the main thing that keeps them from being absolute tops is that they don’t have the pure skill of other top lines (Chi, SJ, etc)

Flames in the retro reds. Thought we already wore them vs Edmonton?

I just checked our site’s photo library, Res. They wore the regular unis both of the other nights.

I’ll be damned. Was figuring they got approval to do it an extra night. Change things up a little.
And don’t remind me about western night. I hate country, and am fucking SICK of hearing Paul Brandt.

Eh, no matter how good VAN is (and I’m not convinced they are all that, again there is the issue of their bottom 6 being just so terribly terrible that they could lose them games) there’s only so often you can come back from 3-0 in a season before you’re due for a correction.
I look forward to the tears on Luongo’s face when that day comes. A grown man should be able to take his lumps.
Well if you consider that VAN’s top line is on pace to go way beyond their career averages, I’d probably say that a lot of their success is due to bounces going their way. There’s probably a reason why nobody (even the players themselves) figured they’d be scoring so many goals. They remind me of the entire Avs team in fact…
