Flames/Blues Post-Game: The Great Depression
The Flames have scored more than 3 goals once in their last 13 games.
Jarome Iginla is mired in perhaps the worst drought of the last decade.
The PP is amongst the worst in the league.
The Flames are currently in 9th place and battling with the Red Wings for the final play-off spot. They have a negative goal differential.
There's no real good news in Flamesland right now. The forwards managed to generate some chances after they went down by a goal or two, but many of them were shot wide or into a block. Story of the last two months for this club. Clear looks at the net are rare. None of the money players up front can seemingly do anything of note. The bounces are going universally in the wrong direction. Things are bound to turn around to some degree, because the SH% is below what could reasonably expected of an AHL squad right now.
There's not much left to say at this point. We have to sit back and wait to see if this storm blows over.

On the plus side…they play the worst team in the league pretty soon. God help them if they lose to the Oil.

What is: Phrases about the NHL that I never thought I’d hear… granted that’s mostly about the Wings but still.
True. IN the Wings defense, they’ve been decimated by injury and had crap luck all year. I’m guessing they get healthier in the last 30 and some pucks start going in.

They’ll likely get everyone, including Franzen, back no later than right after the Olympics. They’re also shooting 7% 5 v 5. That’s unlucky. The Flames 5 v 5 SH% is still middle of the pack, but that’s basically an artifact from shooting 15% the first few weeks.

And of all the teams to be ‘battling’ for the last playoff spot, I’m not comforted that it’s Detroit. Although, in all honesty, I think them making the playoffs is a foregone conclusion and the true battle will be with Nashville/Phoenix/Colorado/Los Angeles. (Not to mention the teams behind, but let’s think positive).
This is killing my fantasy team. Good thing I also have Gaborik and Kopitar.
On a more serious note, what can this team do to right itself? I don’t foresee a large break-out anytime soon, especially with Dawes and Mosser out.

Went to bed just before the Blues scored
Good call. Another day, another pathetic showing on the tally sheet.
I read on the Yahoo recap, apparently the Blues first goal was a lucky bounce that deflected in off Sarich. Typical. Talk about the bounces going against Calgary all the time. This is getting ridiculous, everything is going the right way for the other teams but the wrong way for the Flames. Guaranteed had that situation been reversed last night and the chance had been for the Flames the puck would have deflected the opposite way and went wide.
Right off Dustin Boyd’s skate, actually. The replay was very clear.
They’re due for a bounce or six. Whether that’s enough to get them actually winning more games than they lose is another matter.

There was a couple of bad bounces on that one.
It’s going to be absolutely fascinating to see what Sutter does at the deadline this year. Last season, he acquired a piece the Flames arguably didn’t need – not only just because Jokinen is more hype than player, but because the team was scoring anyways. Of course, I’m sure it was more about grabbing a guy he’d coveted for years than anything else, but another quality defender (on top of Leo) and another legit goalie would have been nice.
This year, his team isn’t as injured, but has glaring needs up front. To the degree that it’s doubtful a single trade will right the ship. He also has no real trade assets outside of defenders people may not want (at least, not until the off-season). His options are limited but both the results and optics demand he do something.
The only thing worse than watching the Flames cycle the puck along the boards and generate zero fucking scoring chances is listening to Peter Loubardias on Sportsnet. I can’t stand that vamped up excitement that flows from his mouth as if a 10 year old girl is lifting up their skirt in front of him.
On another note, maybe missing the playoffs will be a good omen. If you look in Webster’s, inept is defined as making it past the 1st round of the playoffs once in 21 years. The makeup of this squad is not magical by any stretch. This should be the last year for the “core” guys.

Does Ville Leino interest anybody? At 26, the Finnish winger is inexpensive and rumoured to be available. Probably wouldn’t cost a whole lot either. Could be an astute move, no?
I hold him in higher regard than a Nystrom or Moss or Boyd. His skill set is light years ahead of those three.

He makes 50k a year more than Sjostrom, and I suspect he’s a cut or two above Freddan. Worst case, he’s the same. Best case, you get lucky the way the Flames did with Juice when Florida gave up on him. It’s like anything else, though. What will Detroit want, and will they do a deal with a team that they’re battling with for a playoff spot?

Ya… kinda forgot about the whole battling with Detroit for a playoff spot thingy – not used to them being down so low.
Worth the look though IMO.
I might have overlooked that one myself

On the other hand it may be the kind of kickstart needed. Theres a lot more on the line when you’re battling with a former teammate for something.

Yeah, I doubt Detroit wants to get rid of anybody at the deadline, as they’ll have a good chance of getting into the playoffs once they’re healthy again (and there’s obviously nobody the Flames could give them who would help them in that area right now, with that kind of trade).

I’ve read all of your comments and agree the optimistic view is best if possible. However, I’ve finally reached the point where I’m not positive it’ll turn. The compressed schedule this year makes the 30 games left seem more like 20, and they don’t look good right now. Realistically, everything they’ve got so far this year is on the back of an unexpected performance from Kipper and if that doesn’t hold, the West is too tight with to many three point games for them to eventually turn it around and still make the playoffs. And either 7/8 in the playoffs is nearly worthless (other than I’d rather watch playoff hockey than not).
I can honestly see it going the other way more, where they end up in bottom 3 or 4 in the west and regret trading away a top 10 pick.
No Maimster, no!! Don’t go to the Dark side!
:-)
You raise a good point about Kipper holding things together but imo that surprise (and it was a surprise) was counterbalanced by the complete disappointment of the forward corps (also a surprise, to me anyway). Last season this team was very good at driving possession, and I still hold that the loss of Cammalleri is not the answer.
I remember last season that Iggy played a lot with Cammalleri but Keenan also tried him with Bertuzzi and we know that’s just a bad idea off the bat. And I’m the first to condemn Keenan for giving Bertuzzi more than fourth-line ice time but to his credit he gave the big guy zero responsibilities and kept him from truly harming the team for much of the season.
And I don’t remember the most frequent lines used but I do know Iggy played sheltered ice time with players suited for it (Camm for instance) and just judging by my hazy recollection of how the centre depth chart shook out (Lombardi was frequently a second-line feature, for instance), he played significant ice time with Lanks as well. Which just makes perfect fucking sense, no? Play your best winger with your best centre, surely good things might come of it.
All that is to say a few things:
1.) MattF is prescient, he wanted to keep Keenan and get Smyth, so he foresaw both that B. Sutter would fuck with the roster and that the Flames needed another forward difference maker while I thought beat-them-line-by-line would work again no matter how the lines shook out.
2.) This team still has the capability to put together a terrific PVP line and last year’s so called “third line” could probably play secondary opposition to a draw. The problem is now forward depth will be an issue in the playoffs and plus it makes good sense both now and into the next two years.
3.) Capability and action are different things. If Brent Sutter doesn’t see the light regarding his forwards then I think he needs to be canned, no matter the PR consequences.
And finally:
4.) We’re basically talking about a seven game stretch where they dominated for two games, played well enough to win in one (or two) of them, kinda limped in one, and really stunk it up in two games. So the underliers of this losing streak aren’t as bad as they seem, and the odds of the next seven games going as badly in the win column are infinitesimally low. And the odds of the next seven after that, still infintesimaly low. And so on.
I make no predictions about playoffs because right now they’re on the bubble and luck is huge and I don’t have the intestinal fortitude for gambling with the kind of razor thin edges you get in hockey. But it’s entirely within the range of reasonable expectations that they make it comfortably, and less in the range of reasonable expectations that they miss. You know what I mean?
And I hope I don’t come across as a Flames apologist but I think you know I don’t. You and I probably both remember the NYR game where I put up that poll asking whether the Flames played well (having won), and I think you and I were the only ones who said “no”.
I think what I’m most concerned about (as an external factor that is hard to compute the effect) is this compressed schedule. There are a lot of teams this year who have results that don’t seem to match the underlying numbers, and I’m wondering if the constant games is skewing our understanding. Maybe that means nothing, since the Flames just played once in a week. However, there are a lot of games in the next 3 weeks, and then a lot of time to sit and think about the quick rush to the finish.
I do think the Flames have played well enough to win a number of the games they’ve lost, and I’m not just reacting to the losing streak. They also played poor enough to lose a number of games they won earlier. I understand completely that goals now are not a predictor of goals going forward. However, even when they were winning in late December, and dominating the Canucks (and Avs and Blue Jackets to some degree), they weren’t scoring goals. Their rate of shots/corsi and goals/corsi, over the past 25 or more games, is really low and I think they have a fatal flaw.
Maybe it’s coaching – I’ve been incredibly underwhelmed by Sutter (monumentally disappointed is a better term, perhaps). A underutilization of forward skills caused by non-optimum grouping may be the fatal flaw, which would imply it’s not fatal but fixable. I know everything has shown that defensemen don’t drive possession and offense, that’s the forward jobs. But maybe different/better usage of Phaneuf and JayBo drives a little bit more offense, and that may imply this is fixable. But absent a bright light appearing over the coach’s head, it feels like time is running out on solving this one particularly bugaboo.
The Flames may be turning into the sucker at the poker table, that can’t figure out in 2 minutes who the mark is becuase he’s the mark. They may be a team that other teams are now circling on the calendar. That makes me ill.
But hell, I’ll keep the faith. It can turn around quickly, and I’m not completely out of hope, I promise you. I sure would like to see a sign pretty soon, that’s all.
Re: compressed schedule: it’s throwing me for a turn too. Just now RCleave’s fanpost on Phaneuf’s arm caught my eye – that was 23 days ago. Three weeks! In that time span the Flames went from bad to dominant and then this losing stretch. I could use a break from important hockey, I think the Olympics will be good for that.
Re: reaction to the losing streak: that wasn’t directed towards you at all (although my use of the term “we” would imply otherwise), it was more of a general comment directed towards, well, Kent’s readership. A lot of fans, both here on this blog and my buddies who follow the Flames, are losing their heads. Sometimes I feel sooo aloooone :-)
Re: coaching generally: monumentally disappointed might not be a strong enough term, TBQH (Sutter style). It’s a sad day fan-emotionally when I have to utter the words “I wish Keenan were still here” but there you go, I wish Keenan were still here. Boy was I wrong on him.
Also, damn, Darryl and Brent are waaaay too fixated on this “top 5 GAA” thing, to the point where the Flames are not only not generating enough chances at times (when we know they can generate a ton with almost the same roster), but they’ve just become boring to watch. Being intentionally held back on the forecheck in the first period of a scoreless game against the dregs of the East? That kind of bullshit is highly disappointing to me, and I don’t go to many games at all at the Dome. Couldn’t imagine being a paying fan and having to watch that shit.
Re: defensemen: I think defensemen can still drive results. To be specific I think the study done on it suggested that the gap between the best group and worst group of defensemen is narrower than for the forwards. And that’s how it is on the ice anyway, you notice the forwards more, they’re just doing more. But I think Bouwmeester’s an excellent defenseman, he seems like he’s a guy who’s got the tools to drive possession. But he hasn’t done it quite yet, he’s just been merely excellent defenisvely. I think there was a news piece a while ago saying that Brent was forcing Bouw to play a low energy game, which is to say “REDUCE GAA!!!!” is still paramount in his mind. I wish the fucker would just let go of the reins a bit.
