Flames Back-up Options - Martin Biron

The need for a quality back-up has been an issue for the Flames since Turek took his ball and went home. Darryl Sutter has cycled through a number of replacements with limited success since taking the reigns and this year the team finds itself in the same situation. Curtis McElhinney is currently 71st in the league in terms of ES SV%. That's the single worst 5on5 save rate of any goalie that has appeared in 10 games this year.

I was a defender of the kid in the off-season, if only because I argued we hadn't seen enough of him to make a decision one way or the other. To some degree, that's still true given his still small body of work at this level. That said, he's repeatedly failed to put up results that give us any positive indications that he is, in fact, an NHL caliber goaltender. He's also looked rather shaky to my eye his last couple of starts, so it's not just numbers that are indicting his performance at this point.

Star-divide

Before we go further, it should be noted that the Flames are notoriously thin when it comes to trade pieces (aside from defensemen that is) and the first order of business in town should be firming up the forward position. In addition, with Kipper healthy and rolling along, there's no real impetus to improve back-up situation right now.

That said, I'd say that Martin Biron has become the perfect Flames back-up target. He's been bumped down the NYI depth chart by the resurrection of Rick Dipietro and his contract is absolutely perfect (1.4M this season). In addition, he'll be cheap because his results have been awful this year. So awful that they are deceptive. His overall SV% is a paltry .900...however his ES SV% according to NHL.com is .926 - better than Jonas Hiller or Carey Price and just .04 off the pace set by Kipper himself. Where his numbers get hammered down is the PK - .788 SV%. That's well below the league mean and, considering the fact that special teams SV% rates tend to bounce around like superballs, probably not indicative of his actual ability. Biron was a .915 and .918 goaltender for the Flyers the last couple of seasons and has a career SV% of .911. He's a legit NHL goalie.

If Calgary wants a Kipper insurance policy, Biron is probably the way to go. He's the third man out in New York, has numbers that will suppress demand for his services (thereby lowering the price to acquire), has good enough underlying stats to assure us he hasn't fallen off a cliff, a decent resume and a really favorable contract.

As great as getting Biron may be, the problem (as you mentioned in the article) is that we don’t have many trade pieces. So the question is do we have enough to give away in order to get a scorer for the top 3 and a backup? I see no situation where we would be able to get him and Tanguay…unless we can convince Garth Snow to take a 3rd rounder for him. But that’s going to be hard this year because the Islanders are a playoff team who will be buyers at the deadline.

Go Flames Go

McBackup is not an and never will be a NHL caliber goalie. Humorous to me is how D.Sutt has attempted to save some cash on the guy because Kipper is so reliable…but the real doomsday is the moment Kipper goes down for an extended period of time. McBackup and Leland Irving would be eye gouchingly painful to watch. To tell you the truth, Greiss (Nabokov’s backup) is more suited to take on full time duties if Nabby goes down than McBackup is. Its sad and honestly yet another item that separates the Flames from the legit contenders.

If Kipper goes down, we’re doomed anyway. Doesn’t matter who the backup is in that case.

by Resolute on Jan 25, 2010 12:06 PM PST up reply actions

Probably true, given the fact we can’t score. Even a slightly above average tender won’t cut it.

I totally agree McBackup is not the solution, but the Flames have honestly not developed a goaltender in their system since christ was a cowboy. Irving hasnt been given a minute of NHL time and has some respectable numbers in the minors. Not Kipper quality stats but it definitely warrants a game or two by now I would think. This year is McBackups last year with the Flames for sure.

Irving’s stats in the AHL are no better than McElhinney’s. Curtis was an AHL all-star one season in fact.

There’s no back-up solutions in the org currently. Luckily, there’s guys like Biron around the league.

Irving should still be given some NHL minutes nonetheless. Probably easier said than done, but I’d like them to give him a shot instead of wasting time with McBackup.

looking at irving’s numbers, this proposition scares the bejeesus outta me. i may be skeptical that backelhinney is nhl calibre, i’m also unconvinced that irving > cumac…. currently, my highest hope for kippy’s replacement plays in finland. in saying that, you can pretty much disregard what i say since i thought keetley was gonna be stellar.

by walkinvisible on Jan 25, 2010 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

McElhinney is an AHL goalie, who is playing in the NHL with an .874 evsv% and a .885% overall. Irving has a .909 overall and the Heat can’t kill penalties and are the most penalized team in the AHL, by a long shot (They have nearly double the minutes of about 10 of 29 teams). The point being, the fact that these even consider some level of parity is not benefitting the argument for keeping McL around.

Another way of looking at it is this. Irving may not be > McL, but nothing leads me to believe he would be worse, cause as you’ve pointed out…you can’t get much worse than McL.

SO, you have two goalies pretty much at equal levels, on slightly different development curves, AND, of course Irving is 5 years younger, which makes me think that in 5 years, he’s a very safe bet to be better than McL is today. So why waste our time with Curtis? Get a real NHL backup, or give the job to Leland.

by LawrenceS on Jan 25, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed on those points, Lawrence. Abby’s PK situation has been a complete disaster all year. I suspect if the Flames get to March 3 without acquiring a backup, the extra 60 or 70 grand in pro-rated salary between McE and Irving would be easy enough to swallow.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 25, 2010 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

but why would you promote an untested rookie to sit on the bench ?!? it doesn’t make any sense….. i mean, if you’re not gonna acquire a proven backup, why not leave napoleon dynamite in the A where he’s starting and if something happens (god forbid) to kippy then give him the start. i think it’s clear that cumac will only get another couple of starts this year --is it really worth it ?!?!

by walkinvisible on Jan 25, 2010 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

Leland Irving has played two years in the AHL. How much better will he get? I don’t know, but I also know that the Flames need every point they can get, and McE is not the best option in the org. The Flames come first, and I doubt that Irving’s development would suffer much if he came to Calgary for the last month. I’d certainly prefer a cheap, useful vet, but so would a few other teams, so that may not be in the cards. As I said, if they don’t make a move before the deadline, you can’t just leave McE in place. That’s a death wish, IMO.

by Robert Cleave on Jan 25, 2010 3:29 PM PST up reply actions

but why would you “___________” to sit on the bench?!? It doesn’t make any sense.

Fill in the blanks with whatever you want. Henrik Zetterberg was a 7th round pick, so giving away picks isn’t smart at any point.

We need a backup, and Sutter should be employing the best backup he can get, and afford. After that seive McL put on the display he did vs Anaheim, trying to stop pucks from half-way behind the net, he doesn’t deserve the job. IMO.

Leland HAS already played…

….well, everything that Robert just posted. Back to work.

By the way, I now acknowledge that when you questioned my sanity (or my analysis techniques, which don’t exist) when I said that Cumac was fine a couple of months ago, you were right.

I’ll still question everything else you write, though! :-)

Let’s get Noodles coaching Irving full time! He’s worked wonders for Kipper…

by maimster on Jan 25, 2010 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

Ahh, interesting. I didn’t know the PK situation was so poor on the farm.

BTW, nice to see you back in the comments section Lawrence.

by Kent Wilson on Jan 25, 2010 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I’ve been super busy.

The PK in Abby is horrendous. It’s quite possible, given the number of minutes short-handed, and their PK ineptitude, that Irving’s EV sv% is somewhere in the 925% – 940% range. I would be willing to bet it’s almost certainly over .925%

I would be willing to take a flyer on halak. I would toss phaneuf in the package and see what else we could pry from the canadiens.

I’m finally agreeing that McIlhenry is not NHL caliber and think Biron would be a fine target. Not sure it matters, considering pre-season projections for Kipper were awful, he’s destroyed those, and the team is still a 5-9 in the West kind of team. I haven’t seen a game in the last two weeks (which means I’ve missed nearly the whole losing streak), so I should be positve, but this is as discouraged as I’ve been. Just trading 5th rounders makes me sad at this point, much less 3rds or a player from the system.

Still would be fine trading Phaneuf, though!
