The Calgary Flames are a team that may, and I stress MAY, be interested, however if they are they are going to have to talk about some of the "big boys" like Dion Phaneuf amongst others to be included.

Honestly at this point, why not? Its not like this team is going to improve over the next few years and they’d be breaking up something on the cusp. Missing the playoffs on the other hand, which this current team could very well do, would be disasterous for mgt. So make a move. I just don’t want to be at the expense of a player that could be used in the next few years (such as Phaneuf), but sometimes you gotta make the move for the present. I’d say though that Irving, Nemisz, and Backlund are off limits since they are all the Flames seriously have. Thoughts?

I don’t know. I really dislike Kovalchuk as a player. I think he’s more sizzle than steak. And moving Dion for a pending free agent doesn’t make much sense either.
But as you say, what else is out there really?

In addition, it’s hard to argue that the Flames don’t need a Kovalchuk like player, however flawed he might be.

At this point Kent, I don’t know…something needs to give…if they don’t want to move Dion then fine…but D.Sutt’s gotta be ready to go this summer. Perplexed is the word that explains my thought atm vis-a-vis Les Flames.

Whats with all these trolls bitching on here now Kent? Ever since the losing streak started, they waste my time by coming on here and writing Calgary Puck-ish garbage.
On with the topic though, Kovalachuk is a 1-D forward and would have him for a grand total of 20 games because someone will give him 8mill next summer. It would be stupid to trade a young piece like Phanuef for a PP rental. Duh
I thought this was just a bit of a tongue in cheek comment after KingJafi made the comment
here.

I have often thought that myself.

Arial is my favorite font!
I get funny looks when I use Comic Sans.

comic sans is for children (and women who watch twilight). hey, baroque, how long do you think we can keep this thread going ? i like it cause it’s the most interesting thing going on between games. ;)

if it was a kovalchuk-for-phaneuf deal with a conditional 1st rounder (atl→cgy) if kovie doesn’t re-sign, then i think that’s actually a pretty decent trade.
by walkinvisible on Jan 22, 2010 1:45 PM PST up reply actions
Meh. We give away a d-man who is still capable skill wise of being a franchise player for a scorer who may give us an extra playoff round? Doesn’t the future look bleak enough right now?

I’m hardly adverse to moving Dion Phaneuf, and I understand the desire to make a change, but trading Dion for a rental would be the ultimate act of desperation, IMO. He’s flawed, lord knows, but he isn’t just some shmoe that gets tossed into a trade package willy-nilly. There’s almost zero chance that Kovalchuk would stay beyond this season at any price the Flames could afford, so you’re pissing away a good asset for a couple of months of a guy that will take a hike as soon as July 1 hits.
The other thing that seems pretty clear to me is that Darryl Sutter has a few hills he’s willing to die on, and my suspicion is that Dion Phaneuf’s long-term existence in Calgary will be one of them, short of a request from Dion himself for a change in scenery.
I absolutely 100% agree with you about Sutter and the Dion “hill.” Dion is practically a Sutter except for the name on the back of the jersey and the fact he isn’t from Viking, AB. I think it’s funny the media is hanging their hat on Dion being traded, considering it was “alledgedly/supposedly” made up on a blog, but my bet is on someone like Robyn getting traded. He still has some value and trading him for a rental would not be the act of desperation trading Dion in that same scenario would be. I’d be curious to know which centers are actually being offered up to D.Sutt these days considering a Flames dman for a center is the flavor of the day.

I’m not sure I agree with the theory that Sutter is never going to trade Phaneuf. I honestly think Sutter has realized (perhaps, after conversations with his brother) that Phanuef is not Sutter-like. Sure, he feels good about drafting him when he did (because that’s his only high-round success) but I think he knows now that with Gio becoming the player he is (better than Dion no matter what the QualComp numbers may say), with JayBo around and with all the young D in the system, that Dion is expendable.
Sutter makes curious moves, but it seems like when they’ve not been great he’s been willing to go a different direction. I believe that will happen with Phaneuf.
Of course, trading him for Kovy would be a bad idea.
He has been willing to ‘fix’ his poor decisions for the most part, but unfortunately he tends to either replace them with another poor decision directly, or if he actually fixes them, he soon makes a move that nullifies his good choice.
Off the top of my head:
Good moves:
-picking up Cammaleri (now nullified)
-picking up Bourque
-picking up Tanguay (now nullified)
-picking up Dawes
-if he drafted Pardy, then good job on that
Poor moves:
-letting Cammaleri go in exchange for Jokinen/JBo (as much as it is “directly” for JBo, the decision to grab Jokinen was basically a decision not to resign Cammy the following season)
-getting rid of Tanguay
-the Jokinen trade (bad move times ten)
-almost all of his draft choices
-loading too much of the salaries on the back end
Neutral moves:
-signing JBo (he’s got his benefits, but ANOTHER expensive dman? Oh great)
-drafting Phaneuf; as WI mentioned, that draft year was basically shooting fish in a barrel in the first round. He could’ve done better, and would’ve had a hard time doing worse
-most of the various moves amonst the bottom two echelons of forwards

Damn, I bet 2 or 3 years ago, Phaneuf could have been traded for Getzlaf

What do ya’ll think about Dion for Spezza?
by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 22, 2010 1:01 PM PST reply actions
Maybe toss in a dead weight player who makes a million a year to even out the dollars, since Spezza gets around 7ish a year compared to Dion’s 6.5
by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 22, 2010 1:02 PM PST up reply actions
Dion for Brad Richards would be sweet too, but that’s pretty unlikely considering Richards IS Dallas’ offense… But Dallas could conceivably consider it, since their only stellar defender is the aging Robidas, and they have young guys like Benn and Neal who may be ready to step up in the future. But that’s making Ribiero their number one centre, which Nieuwendyk probably doesn’t want to see.
by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 22, 2010 1:06 PM PST up reply actions
Only issue I have with this is Richards, while not old, is not young, either. I really, really want to see the Flames bring in someone good AND young, as opposed to fitting only one of the two criteria.

I think calgary should focus on trading Phaneuf for a upstart LW player. They would need to have a penchant for 2 way play to fit under B. Sutters system. Some feasible choices I would look at include: Ponikarovsky, Booth, or Cammalleri (why not?)
This year is a wash which removes the need to do this soon. Next year how I would focus all of the lines and money is to:
Booth (trade;~4.25 mill)-Langkow-Iggy
Bourque-Lombardi (FA signing:~2.5 mill), Armstrong (~2 mill)/Moss
Glencross-Stajan (FA Signing;~2.5 mill)-Dawes
Lundmark-Boyd-McGratton/Prust
Gio-Buowmester
Pardy-Regher
Pelech/Aulie/Negrin/Johnson
Kipper
Irving
Notes: Conroy likely retires, let jokinen go to free agency, trade sarich and phaneuf.
Lombardi is 2nd on PHX in scoring —> did he finally make the jump to a legitimate top 6? If not Stajan and him are interchangeable (who has 38 points in 51 games; he is only -2 on Toronto which I think is a win on that team)
Total salary leaving: ~15 mill
Incomming salary: ~11.25
This is very pre-emptive and border-line off topic but in all honesty this team would/should be very competitive night after night and they arent losing much in the process.
Now when they fire D. Sutter if only they would hire me we would be in business…
Too many young D-men. You can’t have only 3 guys who are capable of playing top-5 minutes. 3 AHLers/Youngins will lead to doom, especially if Reggie does nothing to get better. Besides, we don’t even know if Booth will play again, and if he does, at what level will he be?

I like a lot of that, although Justin’s point on the D-men is a good one. There would likely have to be another established defensive replacement (doesn’t have to be a 4 million dollar one, though); by next year Pardy might be able to handle second pairing, though, so who knows?
I’d rather have Cammy back than Booth, although it’s really unlikely that Montreal will give up one of their two primary offensive threats.

I say don’t touch Stajan, he is getting first line minutes in Toronto and playing with Kessel, he is probably similar to what happened to Dominic Moore last year, albiet a better player than Moore. Plus, Backlund’s gotta come up at some point here. Use the money for Stajan and go after one of Hamhuis, Volchenkov, Randy Jones, Seidenberg (sketchy because his value is inflated by playing in the SE, similar to another player we have on the blueline), Zbynek Michalek, or maybe even Willie Mitchell (I think he is pretty damn good but that may be too weird). There is a few free agent defensemen available this offseason.
Hey BTW Kent, your blog roll link to Hockey or Die has, well, died. I think they have a new URL. Heres the new link: http://blogs.thescore.com/nhl/

I also am just jumping to conclusions with Stajan, I am too lazy to look at his underlying stats. Maybe he is actually pretty solid, I just figure he gets plenty of PP time and such on Toronto because they don’t have many other options.
