Just Trade Phaneuf Already...
I've been watching as many Flames games as I can. Phaneuf is his own worst enemy. His lack of offense isn't for lack of trying of trying on his part but maybe even the opposite; too much trying and not enough team play in the offensive end.
Every time he touches the puck, this guys shoots it. On PP he is taking a million shots from the blueline with folks like Iginla and Bourque hanging out around the boards or in front of the goal. Even with Jokinen QBing the point, Phaneuf is still gunning shots every time he touches the puck it seems. A bit more passing and working with his teammates would likely help him get assists and such and make him more valuable to his team.
I personally think you can trace that straight back to when he didn't get picked for the Canadian Olympic Team and I also think trading his non team playing self to Atlanta along with a boatload of whatever for Kovulchuck would be just the ticket because the Flames need another forward with presence out there.
Phaneuf, as a dman, is 4th on the team in SOG with 123 and only 12 assists. Bourque is 128 and Jokinen is 147..... Speaks for itself. Check out Duncan Keith's and Seabrooks assist totals by comparision. (35 and 18)
Something like that would possibly put Regehr on the same line with Sarich, Johnson or maybe Kronwall but at least Regehr wouldn't have to cover for Phaneuf's lapses in the defensive end.

I don’t know who said it in the GT, but it was mentioned that the majority of Dion’s problems probably stem from the last 2 years. Coming off of his sophomore season where he slumped a bit, Keenan was brought in. Over the next 2 years, he decided to run around like a beheaded chicken. All of those bad habits picked up while he should have been developing are now rearing their ugly head. It’s going to take a while to get them all figured out-maybe even the entire year. I know it’s going to be hard to swallow, as it presently is, but you just have to suck these things up.
If we get rid of 3, we will seriously regret it in a year’s time.
Go Flames Go
I’m personally torn on what to do with Phaneuf. On one hand I know he would bring in an enticing package that could help this team long term both cap wise and player wise (Or Jason Spezza anyone?). On the other hand, he has shown if he is put in the right situation, he can succeed. Is it a coincidence that his goal totals have tailed off the past two years without Tanguay or Huselius feeding him beauty passes on the PP? I think not.
Will he ever become a shutdown defencemen? I don’ know, but maybe adding a playmaker to this team would get him back to the 20 goals we are accustomed to.
Is it me or has the amount of trolls on this site increased ten fold in the last two weeks (ie. when the losing streak began)?

I wouldn’t call them trolls – most of them have actually contributed to the discussion. Plus, the site traffic has increased in general recently, so some of them are other teams fans.

Sorry for the troll reference…that’s just the frustration coming out.

No offense taken. I am a Blackhawks fan for reasons stated in my profile that go back to the '91 All Star Game in Chicago.
but I also remember the Flames when they were the Atlanta Flames and would let kids my age (then) in free if you were in the scouts. I lived in Georgia then and used to enjoy trips to Atlanta to catch either the Braves or the Flames.
Jerome Iginla is the classiest player in the game imho and I really like that he gives $2000 to charity for every goal he scores. His covering hotel and meals for folks living out of their car during the Olympics in Salt Lake City is an awesome example of the guy’s character and class. I do think that putting Iginla back on a line with Jokinen and Bourque and running Glencross/Langkow/Moss and then Dawes/Lundmark (yes he can center)/Boyd and use Nystrom/Conroy/Mcgrattan (Prust) would be effective. I say that because having someone with speed like Bourque on a line with Iginla and Jokinen will prevent teams from collapsing on those two and keep them honest or cost them a ton of goals to Bourque if they continue to key on Iginla and Jokinen as they do.
About the game last night, the Chicago announcers pissed me off and that wouldn’t be the first time but they are who they are. Call me a troll if you want but please offer something on what I’ve presented if you have problems with it (as some have done)
I wouldn’t say you’re a troll at all. I think some of the regulars here are just getting a little defensive because there has been a lot of negativity from everyone regarding the current team’s makeup of late (from outsiders and fans alike). It’s to be expected, though, since it really is not a team designed for great success.

i, for one, value all sorts of commentary (and an outsider’s POV is welcome in my books). one thing you HAVE to change, though ? jarome is spelled with an A, not an E.

If you’re just talking about the overall negative overtones of conversation, you simply have to look at the team to understand – if the new registrants had come in even last year there would probably be (at least on my end) less negativity.

Lets Face It
We have no one with any offensive prowess. Bring back Doug Gilmour, thatll do it. Or trade Phaneuf straight up for Patrice Bergeron, otherwise we are screwed.
