Panthers @ Flames - What? Another preseason game?
Florida Panther @ Calgary Flames
Game Time: 7:00 pm
Opposition: Litter Box Cats
Coverage: FAN960 (radio) and Flames.com (live stream)
So last night wasn't the most engaging affair (sorry Saskatoon) featuring yawn-worthy line-ups from both teams and a lackluster effort from the Flames besides. I didn't listen to the match (being engaged in a keeper draft), so all I can do is direct the curious few to the Sun's recap and grading of the players. The only items of interest for me are Matt Keetley giving up another groaner and Adam Pardy playing another mediocre game against nominal competition. Both guys are fighting for their lives (albeit at different levels of the organization), so it would behoove them to get things turned around in short order.
If one hangs about water coolers or takes a gander at Flames messageboards, you might encounter some dissatisfied rumblings about Calgary's performance in the pre-season thus far. Which is ridiculous. The Flames have a giant, unwieldy roster (50+), more than half of which is made up of non-NHLers. In addition, the "team" is playing for a brand new coaching staff which is trying to overhaul the club's entire one-ice strategy. On top of that, almost nothing can be taken from a three game sample size, especially in terms of team-wide evaluations. In short: don't sweat it folks.
No rosters have been posted as of yet and I'll endeavor to update the post when they pop up. That said, I'm assuming we'll see a few more vets and stars this evening, given the cast of fringe players and hopefuls that appeared yesterday. The Panthers line-up is also a mystery at this point, but here's the cast they dressed in Edmonton on Friday. Despite a fairly decent mix of vets and rookies, Florida was obliterated by the Oilers 4-0 (shots - 38-18). If the Flames go with the stronger roster and the Panthers don't bring more to the rink than what they showed a few nights ago, it could be a long evening for Florida fans and players alike.
Instant update - Rob Kerr has this morning's practice lines posted. Things may change come game time, but it's better than nothing:
Backlund Jokinen Backlund Iginla
Dawes Langkow Glencross
Prust Jaffray Nystrom
Sutter Germyn Fleury
Cunning Sjostrom
Regehr Bouwmeester
Giordano Phaneuf
Pardy Stralman
Pelech
Kiprusoff
Irving

Wow
Backlund’s pre-season has been so strong, he’s slotted in on BOTH wings with Jokinen? Impressive.
Assuming that line-up stands does that mean Jaffray will have played in every game thus far? Nice to see Stralman suiting up again… I thought it was kind of strange that he hadn’t dressed since that first game where I thought he was one of the better players out there.
I think so. I figured he’d get a long look at training camp.
This will be the last night before a bunch of guys take the plane ride to Abbotsford I think. The Flames need to start collapsing things down and seeing what they have for the big club this year. Plus, the Heat’s training camp starts in a day or two.

I’m certainly worried about how the Heat have performed, but I haven’t seen much of the Flames yet ;-)
I’ll confess that I don’t frequent the message boards much, and the water cooler talk where I live is obsessing about these , uh, alleged professionals, so maybe I’m out of touch. That said, if anyone is worried about how a bunch of AHLers and fringe guys look through 3 games in a compressed pre-season, I can’t really help them at this point.
I’m very interested in the performances of Kiprusoff (unfortunately), Irving, Stralman, Dawes and Theo. As you point out, Kent, it’s time to cull the herd, and if it doesn’t happen after tonight, it will after they get home from Vancouver.
From the team website:
PROBABLE LINES:
Dawes-Jokinen-Iginla
Glencross-Langkow-Fleury
Sutter-Backlund-Nystrom
Cunning-Jaffray-Germyn
D-PAIRINGS
Regehr-Bouwmeester
Giordano-Phaneuf
Pardy-Stralman
GOALTENDERS
Kiprusoff and Irving
Interesting to see Dawes in the golden LW spot while Boyd has toiled with the fringe guys thus far in the preseason. I think we know who is going to get the first shot at the top 6 come October.
If that line-up holds, it also means Jason Jaffray is playing his fourth straight game. That’s a pretty good look for a guy who theoretically ranks about 15-20 on the forward depth chart.
