Flames unveil 3rd Jersey

No complaints on the jersey because I saw that coming, but I'm very disappointed that they kept that anniversary patch.

Old is new, and nostalgia is the new black, or in this case red, as the Flames released their vintage third jerseys Wednesday.

In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Flames in Calgary, the sweater is a throwback to the days of yore, an identical replica of the original and intended as a tip of the hat to the teams that built the foundation for the organization.

Star-divide

The retro jerseys, which were modeled by current Flame Craig Conroy and alumnus Jim Peplinsk at Press Conference this morning, feature a white Flaming C logo with yellow trim on the chest, white collar with yellow trim with the NHL logo right below the neck, as well as two yellow stripes with a white one between them around the bottom of the jersey and on the sleeves. The Flames 30th anniversary patch sits just below the left shoulder.

"I'm going to feel kind of nostalgic when I see that sweater, because that was our first sweater," said Flames co-owner Harley Hotchkiss.

"Sometimes I feel a bit lonely because I'm really the only one remaining of that original ownership group. I get some comfort of course from Jim Peplinski who's been around here for 30 years and can hold my hand whenever I'm feeling sorry for myself."

The vintage uniforms will be worn for the following five home games this season:

October 1 vs. Vancouver - Home Opener
October 6 vs. Montreal
January 2 vs. Toronto - Retro Night
January 30 vs. Edmonton - Stampede Night & Hockey Day in Canada
March 11 vs. Ottawa - Jersey Off Our Back

The new vintage jerseys will allow fans to relive the glory days, all while looking forward to a bright future with a promising season less than a month away.

"We think it's important to honour our history, and we think it's as important to focus going forward," said King.

"I feel good about our organization, about our team. We're in a highly competitive league as you all know, but I think we've got a well-rounded team and that we'll make a good account of ourselves this year," agreed Hotchkiss.

Langkow’s wearing Bullard’s jersey!

YES!!!

I’ve been waiting for many years now for the Flames to unleash a throwback and it has finally happened. What I find funny about the whole announcement is how cryptic and sneaky Ken King et al tried to be about the whole thing. They first mentioned they were going to go to black, then they mentioned that they were going to to do something very special, then they mentioned their third would be a throwback, then they scrapped the whole idea, then they leaked the 30th anniversay logo and dropped lines on their website about fans winning a vintage jersey…when all along it was always going to be a throwback jersey. I mean does it really surprise anyone? Were they really going to come up with a new logo for a black third? The Flaming C is classic (its like Montreal coming up with a new logo just for a 3rd jersey…we all know how well the fire breathing horse went over) and after Edmonton dropped throwbacks last year for their anniversary…the Flames had to do the same for their 30th. Its been a long waited move and I’m thinking I’ll get the Jay Boo throwback!

That 30 patch is the ugliest thing I’ve seen, otherwise it looks amazing!

So on January 2nd the Leafs will where there throwback alternate or is it only Flames retro night.

Because if the Leafs where there alternate it would be kinda of a era gap between the two unis.

i will eventually warm up to this jersey but i really wanted calgary flames HQ to actually design something cool so i could get a sjöström #11. obviously, the only thing i could possibly get on this one would be iginloob #12.

ie: pure disappointment (though not a surprise whatsoever. i knew in early august that that they were gonna do an 80’s era throwback.

i’m glad it’s red, at least. it’s the freakin’ C of red, for cryin’ out loud. anything else is preposterous….. ps: there should be another option in your poll: “meh.”

I’m with you WI, I feel “meh” about them too. Somehow it just doesn’t seem ‘long ago’ enough that they wore those jerseys. Didn’t they wear that jersey until 1993, and then had that nasty diagonal stripe one in 94? That’s only 15 years ago that they changed from this. I would have preferred to see either A: a departure from this, staying very close to the original, but perhaps making it slightly more modern. or B: Something from a very very long time ago, which I guess would mean either Atlanta, which is an awesome logo btw, or some other none NHL historical Calgary connection, which could celebrate hockey in Canada.

For example, when the Vancouver Giants wore the old Millionaires get-up it looked freakin’ amazing. Check it out yo!

pps: was jim peplinski ever actually captain ? his wiki says yes but i think lanny wore the c from 83-89…. ?

by walkinvisible on Sep 2, 2009 6:36 PM PDT reply actions

there were multiple captains that season because lanny didn't play all the games.

Oh, and that patch is really awful. It doesn’t even match the retro concept. It is really nasty.

Hey awesome

Always good to see my cousin Jim back in the jersey.

Slightly related: how awesome would it have been if the Flames would have gotten the old Atlanta Flames symbol for Abbotsford.

by Kent Wilson on Sep 3, 2009 5:27 AM PDT reply actions

That would of been super sweet.

I think the NHL owns the rights to that logo…I’m not 100% sure though. I remember talking to an NHL rep and him telling me that the NHL owns all trademarks to the vintage logos (Seals, Nords, Scout, Jets, etc.) except the Whalers (which is owned by the city of Hartford for some reason). This explains why there always has been limited Whalers gear available. Anyways, maybe the NHL has acquired the Whale trademarks because for the first time ever Whalers gear is being heavily advertised on affiliate sites and its under the Vintage brand.

And the Whale are appearing in at least one of the two games this year (2K10).

Brilliant.

Glad to see that it’s back. I’ve always been a fan of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” THe Flames didn’t need that ugly diagonal stripe in 1995; they didn’t need the fire-breathing horse; they didn’t need to make the “C” black on the red jerseys. I always liked their classic look; the white “C” has a photo-negative effect going on when compared to the traditional red one.
