For 1.5M to boot. Can't imagine what Holland is thinking here, although "desperate times" and all that. The Wings are looking decidedly less super human heading into the new season.

i’m not shocked that bert got a job, i’m shocked that bert go that much t over league minimum.

That’s incredible. I guess if you save money on Goalie’s there is an increased chance you will spend it on awful players, which will further result in the need for better goalies. Bert’ll be happy.

D for 3 and now goal for 21 years, of course I'm a goaltender apologist.

This might be the best news of the summer, better than Bouwmeester even. Or maybe not. But it’s still awesome and it proves even the best (ie: Holland) aren’t perfect.

Where was Stevie Y on this one?

I disagree.

I think $1.5 for 44 points in 66 games is a bargain. Especially if you pair him with someone who can babysit him defensively.

He’s not going to play top 6 minutes.

Hell, Primeau’s making 1.4 ;)

That -13 stands out though. As worthless as plus minus is as a stat, there is no doubt that Bertuzzi is a major defensive liability out there.

Glad he’s gone.

Best of luck to Todd Bertuzzi this hockey season ;-)

Seriously, I’m with wi on this. Why would anyone offer him much more than a training camp invite? Oh, well, if Red Wing fans really want a good idea of how Flames’ fans felt last year, here’s a blast from the past. He’s a black hole in his own end, and they can have him. Even guys like Langkow and Moss couldn’t really help him.

Earl Sleek had Bertuzzi nailed dead to rights in the first comment on that link – Bertuzzi had to be carried by his line mates. When you look at most of the goals Bertuzzi scored, he was the recipient of some great work by someone else – either a puck battle won, or a breakaway pass. There aren’t many goals I can think of (certainly not that made the top goal lists) that feature his hard work leading to a teammate’s success. That is the one saving grace for Detroit on this one. There are plenty of players out there who can carry his ass.

What were they thinking?

The Flames, I mean…to think they could have had him for 1.5M…he’s worth that in shootout goals alone! Can’t believe they let him get away to the hated Wings…

…oh hell, I can’t keep it up! Another bright day in a bright summer for the Flames…

i wonder if babcock can stand him.

i remember zetterberg saying in an interview something like “in detroit, if you dont play defence, you dont play at all”

It’s great, because if he can’t it means they have less cap flexibility to get someone who’s not a total liability. Great signing for the Flames and every other Western Conference team but the Wings.

maybe, JUST MAYBE, babcock and staff can actually teach him something where keenan/playfair didn’t bother.

Has any coach in his entire career taught Bertuzzi how to play D? Hell, was Babcock able to the first time around?

Bertuzzi was last in plus-minus, last in giveaways and second last in minor penalties taken. James Mirtle noted that he was “inconsequential to [the Red Wings] success”. I agree. But he has the potential to play a role in their downfall.

So really, why even waste the time on this guy? Baffling signing by Detroit.

The largest reason I wouldn’t sign Bertuzzi is because of injury history.

I think that his crossover to Detroit is testament that he can’t play a physical game any more and he’s moving more towards a puck possession style of play.

I think he’ll fit with the Wings.

the largest reason i wouldn’t sign bertuzzi is because of the ENORMOUS lawsuit he’s facing in october. no way you can convince me that his game won’t be affected before, during and after this.
