Is Heatley viable?

Assuming the Flames are making a run for the cup, how about Heatley? A talented Calgary native-too expensive perhaps? Suppose Sarich who's darn good and Jokinen a bonafied scorer were packaged for Heatley? Is there room for such a move? Wise? I like Chicago's approach with young talent developing into a Cup contender-should Calgary go for expensive veterans like Heatley or be patient and develop the talent they have-- waiting a few years for a Cup run?

Possible, I suppose. Viable? probably not. At $7.5 million, we would, as you surmised, have to give away some big pieces, for what would be probably only a 10 goal improvement on Jokinen at most, plus a pretty big hit to our defence. In truth, I think that trade would be a net loss for us, especially given Heatley isn’t exactly known to be a Selke candidate.

And then you get into his attitude. How he has handled himself this summer has exposed a lack of character from this guy. If I’m looking to build a team first environment in my locker room, a me-first prima donna like Heatley is not the type of person I am looking for.

Heatley viable?

Heatley almost signed with Edmonton. He could be a dominating force playing with Iginlia now that Cammerelli is gone. I’m of the mind that a few young players could be more economical and effective if they really want to excel at the NHL level. Any ideas on another free agent for the Flames? Sutter said he may sign another free agent. Bertuzzi should be signed in my estimation. Perhaps a goalie who can step in and play 15 games-Kipper is overplayed and —burning out in the playoffs? How about Brendan Morrison as a free agent? Taylor Pyatt? Theres a few good ones left. Boucher or Legace in goal?
I’m sure the Sutters are all over it but its fun to speculate.

Heatley is a cancer

As someone living in Ottawa, I have a front row seat for this three ring circus. The fighting has spilled out openly into the media, the other players are being dragged in, and the fans as the ones suffering. This mess has serious potential to derail the Sens completely for the next few years (especially with a guy in Murray at the helm… not a fan of the Murray’s at all). That trade with Edmonton would not have been full value, but it was a reasonable take that would have helped ottawa get some more depth. Now they are stuck with a guy they say is going to play for them due to that bonus they had to give him, and a guy who still wants out of town. This could be an Eric Lindross situation coming up (where Heatley sits for a year and wastes their money and his career).

No thanks to adding this guy to my team (or any other team if I was a fan of them). He scores a fair bit, BUT he is a notorious coaster on defense as well as not stepping up his game with the effort and speed of the other players on the ice.

I don’t really know what to make of Dany Heatley. Prior to last year, he was considered by many to be a top 3 sniper in the league. Then the team has an off-season, Heatley’s stock falls and then the trade request which has been grossly mismanaged by all involved. I’m not sure which “Heatley” is the real one – the 50 goal, 100 point player who was posting league best +/- figures…or the 35 goal defensive liability that whines his way into he coach’s doghouse. It obvious makes sense to make a move for the first player but not the second given the kind of salary and assets in play…

As someone in Ottawa

I can tell you that he may score the puck in bunches, BUT he takes games off, he does not move with any prolonged urgency (no matter the situation), and he essentially pouts if he gets moved off his favoured line pairings. This is not surprising to see this happen.

Also, he did kill a close friend through incredibly reckless behaviour, so I question his intelligence and common sense as well.

Heatley

Good point, maybe he needs a move to rejuvenate his career. Prior to the salary cap era he would have ended up on the Rangers. No doubt he has talent, the Sutters would reign him in and you might see a 50 plus goal season. Iginlia needs to play with another speedy forward, and Jokinen may fit the bill anyways-should we stay put? Another free agent I like is Brendan Morrison but younger players are cheaper and the point production may not justify another veteran. However, who is going to feed Iginlia? Remember Messier and Gretsky-not to mention Kurri. Do the Flames have the right player for Iginlia? Would Iginlia mesh with Heatley? We’re close we have a decent core already-Cammerelli will be missed-Is Bertuzzi the answer? Langkow should be the no. 1 centre. Jokinen is signed anyways, should that be it for free agent signings?

Heatley is SLOW

so he does not have that speed you mentioned for Iginla. He also is one of those that needs to be shooting at all times (though not at an Ovechkin level of shooting-itis).
