Randy Sportak says it’s a one year, 650k deal…which is less than his qualifying offer I would imagine. Can’t see why Boyd didn’t just sign that.
Good news for the team though.
Yup. His QO would have been about 741,000 plus 5%, so 770K-ish. One way deal for less, maybe? That’s about 200K less than I would have guessed, given that an analogous player (Dawes) got 850K for 2 years.
As for the roster:
Dawes-Langkow-Iginla
Bourque-Jokinen-Moss
Glencross-Conroy-Sjöström
Prust-Boyd-Nystrom
McGrattan-Stuart
I wouldn’t be surprised if things start that way. That does presume everyone is healthy. With Bourque still on crutches, maybe that’s a reach. If things go well, Boyd forces his way into the top nine, and Conroy continues his slow move down the depth chart. I still expect Conroy to be a good player, so that would only occur if Boyd has a solid camp.
Nystrom and Sjöström might flip spots, and I’d rather have VDG than either of the last two guys on the list. We’ll see if Sutter means it when he says one-way contracts are no guarantee of a roster spot. It’s not exactly an elite group, IMO. The Flames will need a lot of things to go right (Dawes), and things from last year to keep going right (Bourque, Moss, Glencross). If they do, Sarich likely finishes the year in Calgary. If not, he’s the guy most likely to be on the move.

…and with Boyd and the one-way deals, that’s 23 guys signed for 1.4 million under the cap. I wonder if Sutter can cope with all that space ;)

Incredible. I don`t know how Sutter has done it this offseason but he has. Gotta give props to the guy. Boyd was my final concern and for 650,000 – that`s incredibly low. I would have preferred a two or three year deal myself but oh well.
1. So we finally eradicated Aucoin, Bertuzzi, Ericsson and Roy as UFA`s
2. We traded Primeau for two fringe prospects- Stuart and Stralman(!)
3. The old warrior Rhetsky is off the books
4. Re-signed Boyd, Lundmark, McElhinney and Pardy for under 2.5 mil cap hit
5. Took care of business in Abbotsford
6. Acquired Sjostrom, Dawes, Jaffray, Kronwall and Murray
7. Traded Vandameer to get Prusty back
8. essentially traded Leopold for Bouwmeester
and err…9. McGratton (at least he’s super cheap)
That’s pretty much all the checkmarks I wanted and then some. What more could we ask for? Renegotiate Phaneuf, Kipper and Iggy and get them to give a collective 3 mil/year back?
He’s got his brother on the case as well, and I think that was pretty important. Sutter certainly cleaned up a lot of things this summer, several of which were his own doing (thought I’d get that in before walk invisible comes around). Unless someone knocks his socks off with a trade offer, I think he’s done for the summer. He’s got Jokinen’s expiring contract coming off the books for next year, and the only other major 2010 FA’s are Bourque, Boyd and Conroy. Solid work, all things considered.

True, That’s a total oversight on my part and an important 10. Upgraded the coaching staff.
And hey, like I was told when I was young: If you make a mess, don’t think you can ignore it, get cleaning it up. That’s what Sutter’s done.
There will be a hoard of fresh faces at camp this summer on D, at forward and behind the bench. That should be good for some excitement come pre-season. …or… now.
Sutter has gone about cleaning up all his own blunders this season, whilst not making any new ones (McGrattan aside). It’s an appreciable step forward for sure.
I have more faith in Boyd than most here – I think he deserves a real shot at top 6, without getting jerked around by Keenan (and subject to the Bertuzzi Rules, which stipulated he needed 19+ minutes a game minimum). If he spends another year on line 4, I think that is an extremely poor sign for the organization – as noted many times, there is a lack of upside forwards in the system, but he’s one of them and they need to give him the chance to prove it. It’s a long season and he needs a real chance.
Having said that, the cheap contract makes me nervous that they don’t see him as anything than fill at the bottom of the roster.
I like Boyd – a lot. I’ve liked everything I’ve seen about him since I first saw him skate as a Flames prospect.
That said, he is still finding his legs at this level. He was a step behind pretty much everyone last year in terms of moving the puck in the right direction and defensive capabilities. He’ll have to improve markedly in order to get real top 6 time on this club I think – Glencross, Bourque, Moss are well ahead of him in this regard.
At some point, the org may just move him to wing full time. I think that might help move things along.
Agreed that he is a step behind, but I think that’s because he hasn’t got the chance to play with anyone other than pluggers most of the time. I understand that the numbers filter that factor out a bit and his were still pretty pedestrian. He needs to get stronger, not sure if he’s taking a step forward in that department this summer.
With all that, still, I thought they wasted a year of his development last year and it may have been because they wanted to keep his potential salary down this year (that was a theory at one point that had merit). However, he has higher upside than Glencross, Bourque, Moss (as much as I love those guys) and part of the organizational responsibility over a long season is to take a chance on pushing him to a higher level, even if there is some short term pain. I think they need to take the risk, even if it loses a point or two in the standings.
I agree, though, he should be moved to wing.
It’s true that Boyd hasn’t really gotten true at-bats yet – hell, Keenan didn’t even play him on the PP. Part of it is Boyd’s weaknesses as a player and part of that was the organizations “win now” agenda.
Players like this just eventually end up “getting it” though. One season, they take a giant step forward and there doesn’t seem to be much of an explanation why aside from being a year older. If and when that happens with Boyd, I’m willing to bet Brent will shuttle him up the depth chart.
Bourque – Langkow – Iginla (facing stiff competition) Line 1
Dawes – Jokinen – Boyd (getting the fleshy underbelly) Line 2A
Glencross – Conroy – Moss (getting the toughest competition) Line 2B
Nystrom – Prust – Sjostrom (going all ‘road warrior’ when they get ice time) Line 4
McGratton in the box
From the article:
"They never called me," Bertuzzi, an unrestricted free agent, said Thursday night from his home near Kitchener, Ont. "No calls from them whatsoever. So obviously, I’m out of their picture.
"
I am really enjoying this off-season.
