Kronwall - one way deal
According to cap geek, Staffan Kronwall's 500k deal is one way, meaning he will be the Flames de facto 7th defender next season. Not terribly surprising if true, but it's mildly odd that Sutter would agree to a one-way contract for what is essentially an AHL defender.

As of October 10, 2007 the only players on a 1-way contract who are not subject to waivers [and thus not subject to recall waivers] are:
- Andrew Greene, NJ Josh Harding, MIN
-
- Vadim Khomitski, DAL Ville Koistinen, NSH
-
— Staffan Kronvall, TOR
- Joel Lundqvist, DAL Cory Murphy, FLA [will be exempt for all of 2007-08 only]
-
- Alexander Semin, WSH Hannu Toivonen, STL
-
— Noah Welch, FLA
This is a little bit dated but is it still possible that he is exempt?
exempt would be amazing.
otherwise, i can’t explain the deal, short of “buh-bye [insert player name]”. sarich ?
I dont think it necessarily means the end of anyone…if there’s one thing we know about Sutter, it’s the fact that he likes to have lots and lots of defensemen (and he doesn’t mind sinking lots and lots of money into them).
I know the Moose picked up Jason Krog’s salary last year (600,000), and it isn’t like the Canucks’ ownership is poor. I wonder if the ownership in Abbotsford is willing to pay the Flames a piece of change in order to insure they have a competitive team on ice?

I don’t really see any defenseman moving happening soon, but that doesn’t mean that isn’t part of a long term plan in which flexibility is key. Likely, Sutter is positioning himself that if he needs to move a “D” man, in favour of more scoring for example (like in that giant hole on the right wing after Iggy that we have) come the season’s second half, it could easily be an option. I also believe that Sarich’s value right now is lower than it would be at that point in time barring any sort of terrible season or LT Injury because of the other URFA’s available. Last year I didn’t see Lombardi finishing the season with us and this year it could be Sarich if the scoring is ugly low as it looks to be.
I personally would like to see this unit of 6 get a full year’s go at things to see how they do and rather have Sutter focus on getting something for Primeau and put to rest the whole Bertuzzi, Roy, McGratton issues. Those are four players I wish we could take a mulligan on right now and use the money/roster space to go shopping for a young fast scoring right winger.
Slightly unrelated Flames history question
Speaking of one-way contracts and waivers and such…does anyone on here know how much money the Flames payed ages ago to “assist” the Theo Fleury deal to go through. I remember hearing there was some waiver claim (which didn’t make any sense to me) and a payout to stop the trade from being blocked. I never heard how much the Flames paid.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
This is pure speculation, but perhaps Coach Sutter sees something in Kronwall the way he saw something in Oduya. Oduya started as a 6th-7th defensman and turned out to be a pretty good top-four defensman.
As a Swede, I do think that Kronwall and Oduya do have similarities as to where they were before Oduya “got better”.
Despite managing only 1 assist in 55 NHL games, Kronwall does possess the talent to maybe be a 12-16 point defensman in the NHL.
