Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

since trading for Alex Tanguay in June 2006 Sutter has given up a stunning 7 first or second round picks for players who have stayed less than a season (aside from Tanguay who stayed 2 years and Joikinen (sic) who will be there a little over a year if he lasts

A commenter at Spector's Hockey. I can't tell if it's an accurate statement, because tracing all the transactions between now and then is a formidable task. If it is though...yuck.

I don’t know either, but I do know that last year was the first time since 2003 that the Flames had a second round pick. I don’t look at the trade for Cammalleri in that context, btw, because there’s no way Sutter moves that pick if he doesn’t have the 25th pick – for -Tanguay deal in his pocket. That was really a player swap in practical terms.

Still...

That pretty much explains the lack of any solid up and coming talents in the farm system.

“lack” is pretty harsh. How about that’s why the farm isn’t overflowing with up-and-comers?

I was trying to be somewhat kind

I am told I am overly negative at times.

"Lack" is pretty accurate

I’ve seen the Flames’ AHl team play about 70 games in the past two years. Not much to get excited about. Good coaching and maybe a couple of 4th-liners, but no impact players.

The majority of the Flames more exciting prospects are (or were) all in junior last year: Negrin, Nemisz, Brodie, Backlund, Aulie.

Well, lets look at the deals…

2008-09
Sent 08 first and 09 second to LA for Cammalleri and a 08 second
Sent Tanguay to Montreal for an 08 first and and 09 second
Sent conditional 09 (?) second to Chicago for Bourque
Sent 09 second to Colorado for Leopold
Sent 10 first as part of Jokinen trade

2007-08
Sent 07 first to St. Louis for 07 first

2006-07
Sent 06 second and 07 second to Colorado as part of Tanguay deal
Sent 08 second as part of Conroy deal

On the whole, technically Sutter gave up a first and second for Cammalleri, who will only be here the one year, but he also got a pick of each back in the Tanguay trade. Net result: a wash.

Potentially gave up a 2nd for one year of Leopold, if he does not re-sign.

Unless I am missing some deals that involved first our second rounders, this commenter is full of shit. At most, we’ve given up two firsts and one second for players thst stayed <1 year, and that is only if you give the Cammalleri technicality. In truth, we’ve only given up the 2nd for Leopold, if he does not return.

Unless, of course, the commenter us using some silly logic in calling a player like Kobasew the equivalent of a “first rounder”, ignoring the five or so years we got out of Chuck before he was dealt.

Yeah, that seemed like a really high number. Now, if we started throwing 3rd rounders in there…
