Let the Bouwmeester era in Calgary BEGIN!
TSN is reporting a 5 year deal. I'm hearing 6.6M per year, but that's not confirmed. Assuming it's real, I think I can live with that cap hit.
We'll get into salary analysis and budget issues later. Now is the time for initial reactions.
Put me down as "pleased".

Very Pleased
I have to say Sutter is a genius!!!
If for nothing more than that Vandermeer for Prust deal (that was a thing of beauty)
while i’m not convinced that they’ll all be staying, a defensive corps of regehr, jaybouw, dion, sarich, and gio (and pardy ?) is effin’ formidable. i would think that sarich would be the oddman out, and that gio’s value contract is now untradeable. woohoo !!!
[this is, of course, the kiss of death].

He can always bury that salary in Abbotsford. If he was willing to go that route with Eriksson, eating a million-four for a year to help the cap situation isn’t beyond the pale. That and not succumbing to signing Bert for cheap would be good all around.
Oh, and if Kiprusoff has another poor year, it’s all on him, because he has a pretty fair group in front of him, at least on D.

Nice work, Darryl!
Now, our new coach will straighten out Dion, Pardy will re-sign, and the Flames will have the best D in the league. (Just don’t trade Dion for Heatley, please!) Dump Primeau and Darryl regains his hero status. Ship out one or both of the Finnish connection and start planning the Cup route!
Everyone is Wrong!!!
About who is getting traded and who isn’t.
First Phaneuf is going nowhere i repeat nowhere.
Kipper is going nowhere (with a better D he will be much improved and win the Vezina)
Jokinen could be traded but only for a cheaper scoring alternative who will play good defence
IMO Sarich is the likely one to be traded he has doesn’t have a no trade clause and his 3.6 million salary is easily moveable (when Mike f’ing Commodore makes 4 million/year 3.6 for Sarich seems like a steal). Where I don’t know, for who I don’t know and don’t care.
i totally agree about sarich being the most tradeable, especially if sutter gets an affordable pardy contract. if all the blueliners currently on flames payroll return, we’ve got 6, with the 7th guy being pelech (i like this a lot).
if we get rid of sarich for capspace, pelech becomes the sixth guy which, paired with a jaybouw or a regehr, could feasibly fasttrack his development (but would allow for some pretty sad goals against, i’d imagine). all in all it’s pretty rosy on D.
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions
He’s a right shot, so maybe with Gio or reunited with Pardy on the third pair.
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions
jaybouw shoots left.
infact, the only current flames blueliner that shoots right is sarich.

oh. you said pelech.
yeah. F*&#! i can’t even think about pairings right now it gets me too giddy.

Trading Sarich makes a lot of sense. His value is pretty high right now since he had a good season last year, but his contract is the biggest of our non-key players. He’d be a good fit for a team with a lot of cheaper young players looking to add some experience. LA comes to mind, or maybe St. Louis?
When Brent Sutter was hired, he talked about restoring Calgary’s reputation as a defensive team. I have to admit, I doubted he could do it with what we have, but I don’t anymore.
also ? i will give full kudos to darryl. jaybouw could have easily gotten “scott gomez money” or “dany heatley money” and somehow trading jordan effing leopold and a 3rd round draft pick we didn’t have two days before ellicited the comment “I was encouraged by the commitment Calgary showed by acquiring me prior to July 1”.
darryl, you really effed up the cap at the end of last season, but i trust you’ve learned from your mistakes. i like this move, sir.
He is already on the Flames Roster
Checked out Flames homepage for some info and they’ve already inputed him in.

i wonder how aucoin feels about this signing ?
probably pretty good, i would imagine…..
(sorry, shinpad. thanks for your hard work)
He’s unemployed, unless Pardy doesn’t resign and he takes a lowball contract. Even then, he’s likely out. They got more out of him than I ever anticipated, but it’s time to move on.

Good numbers. And to think he’ll only be 30 years old at the end of the deal. I’m jealous!

One interesting thing I just noticed is that Phaneuf and Bouwmeester are both UFA at the end of 2014. That might be a fun summer for the front office.
uh. i’m thinkin we don’t need to worry about this, just now.

Oh, come on, you’re spoiling my “every silver lining has a cloud” mentality ;)
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions
let’s worry about getting pardy signed first, shall we ? and dumping primeau.
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions
I’m pretty sanguine about both things happening, really. I think Pardy is going to get done, and they can always spend the ownership’s money to disappear Primeau for a year.

new coach, new season, former teammate (jaybouw)…. could be good, to be sure.

what if KIPPER actually plays well ?!?!????! :)
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions
I can say this, I have been a big supporter of Kipper through the past three seasons, maybe even too strong of a supporter since I believed, and still do, that the system they were playing, under Keenan and Playfair was flawed. The defense was brutal, Phaneuf was brutal…it was rotten to the core. Well, now, with this defense, and with Sutter coaching…if Kipper doesn’t put up a top 10 tender season this year coming up…I’ll be the first to grab a shovel and start digging his grave.
if you’re not stoked, you’ve either got no pulse or you’re a canucks fan…. (hm. same thing i guess)

alternatively,
you could be a sharks fan, like everyone out here, and have no clue who bouwmeester is.
"The hard... is what makes it great."
hahaha… precisely why the guy didn’t hold out for an extra million.

So we have about 5.08 under the cap?
If Pardy comes back is that the end of our Free Agency or is there still someone out there that we can find for cheap and still let them be a vital part of the team this up coming season?
i’m thinkin trade. it’ll be either dion or sarich (and i presume the latter) for some decent forward parts…. sarich is good value for his 3.6 mil and would presumeably have a lot of suitors. hopefully daz will take his time on this.
Could they wait to see if the young guys can make a move? If Pelech or Negrin look like NHLers, someone will still need a solid second pair defenceman mid-season.
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions
agreed. again, hopefully darryl will be patient on this and not feel the need to pull the trigger imminently

Congrats!
Enjoy the passion. The outspoken demeanor. The vanilla responses to media questioning. It’s all good!
Hey, you guys need a first line center. Want Jokinen back?
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions
we’ve got regehr for biting sarcasm, jarome for the feel-good grinning interview, and noodles for the standup comedy soundbyte. vanilla is perfectly a-okay by me, so long as he plays a solid D.
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Bye Bye Boyd?
I doubt Sarich, Jokinen, or anyone else is going to be traded. But when you look at what it will cost to fill the 4th line and 6-7 defence spots, I think we’re open to an RFA poaching now. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if some team throws $1.9M at Boyd, and I don’t think Sutter can match that, even after burying Primeau in the AHL. Or maybe he matches, but then he does have to make a trade to clear some space.
trade...how about drop
rhett warrner and wayne primeau….that will give us cap sapce…
warrener’s not on the payroll after tomorrow, fyi.

WI, you should see Lowetide’s place right now, They’re having a mass freakout over the potential Heatley trade to Edmonton, and the fact that he hasn’t waived his NMC yet.
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions
Following along at Calgarypuck too. The difference in philosophy is staggering. We quietly get Bouwmeester done, while the Oilers big move is a giant, embarrassing mess. Would be a fantastic trade for Edmonton if he agrees to it though.
Sutter’s having a nice off-season. Moss’ contract isn’t out of line, Bouwmeester’s deal got done without a bunch of fuss, and he moved a real problem contract in Vandermeer. There are still more holes upfront than I’d like. We’ll see if they get addressed.
Heater’s a player, no doubt. I think the loss of Cogliano is a shame for them, because he might be really useful down the road, but they have a lot of similar players, and unless you can attract FAs, you have to give to get.
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions
how soon we forget that darryl sutter signed that ridiculously bad vandermeer contract just over one year ago.
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions
Live and let live, WI ;) He’s learning, maybe.
Seriously, it was a terrible deal, and a jaunt through the archives at Kent’s other place would reveal plenty of grumbling on my part about it. Good guy, bad contract, good luck in Phoenix. The end.
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions
oh, i hear you, it just bugs me when people say things like “good on sutter for moving a real problem contract like vandermeer’s” which the dude should never have signed in the first place. i know you know but…. y’know…. ;)

is it wrong that i actually howled at the comment made at 9:42 over at lowetide ?
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, the car crash one was sweet. And Heatley didn’t waive, so no deal. I’m not normally as schadenfreude-y as most Flames fans towards the Oilers, but reading over there has been an utter delight this evening.
by Robert Cleave on Jun 30, 2009 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions
it really is.
i also think the part that said the true travesty of the deal dissolving was that we’ll never get to hear bryan murray say “ladislav smid.” i also enjoyed the comment about what penner thought after his sixth baconator.

also "is heatley married to lauren pronger too ?’ ZING !!!
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions
I laughed, then felt bad. Lowetide (and lack of diving douchebags) has made me warm up to the Oilers.
i was talking to my roommate and feeling rather fortunate to be in a city that players want to go to, with a team that players want to go to…. and for all the venom i had for darryl at season’s end does swiftly evaporate when he starts friday with jordan leopold and a 20th overall pick and ends up with bouwmeester and tim erixon.
i will still fistfight anyone who tells me that he was a genius for getting rid of the vandermeer contract.

Congrats Flames fans. That blueline is fucking insane if you manage to keep it together.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
this is awesome!!…and i really don’t see the flames trading anyone..also i have to give props to sutter for always finding some way to excite the fanbase which is alot more than you can say about of alot of GM’s out there…it has sucked losing in the first round but at least sutter continues to put forth an effort to make us better
dude. stop sweating warrener. the guy is done in a flaming C. wanna count the hours ?
by walkinvisible on Jun 30, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions
in just more than twelve hours, we rid ourselves of the following contracts:
-aucoin
-warrener
-eriksson
-bertuzzi
-roy
-cammalleri
and (unfortunately, unless something gets done) adam pardy.

Pardy is staying. Peter Marher, Roger Millions and Bicycle Bruce Dowbiggin have all been on Fan960 tonight saying that if the deal isn’t already complete, it’s merely a formality at this point.
Damn straight that’s good! That gives us a solid defensive core with a ton of growth potential. If I’ve done my math right, our defensive core is, on average, 1 year 4 months younger than the starting six a year ago. In other words, we’ve shaved off 2 years 4 months from the group. And the icing on the cake is, we’ve got a coach who’s preaching defensive responsibility.
Not to mention that outside of Giordano, Phaneuf is the smallest defensman on the team at 6’3" and 212, which is crazy because Phaneuf can be a destroyer. I’m not buying the fact that Pardy is 6’2" he is massive, he must be 6’4" at least. So we have a young, mobile, tough and massive defense for the next 4 years at least? Damn, life is good. Pardy will be back, I believe it.
Sutter’s trading ans signing skills as a GM are unparalleled in the league today. It’s safe to say that whatever Sutter wants, Sutter gets, one way or another.
The downside to that is, Sutter wants some pretty stupid crap most of the time. Thank goodness Bouwmeester happened to ring a ton of Sutter’s cowbells.
Maybe I am revisiting the past but I am seeing the days of MacInnis and Suter on the point…not the same styles of play, but the powerplay can’t be anything but improved with JBow and Phaneuf on a unit together.
i would love to see sjöstrom back in the ‘dome (he played for the hitmen, if i’m not mistaken), but realistically he’ll command too much money for what he’ll offer. i think DVDG has the potential to be as good without the pricetag.

Anybody thinks Aucoin will be back?
consider Pardy is priority, will they still have the CAP to sign Aucoin?
no chance.
besides, aucoin is playing baseball now.

I saw on a ticker this morning (either Sportsnet or the Score, can’t remember) that the deal was $32.5M (6.5/year). Keep in mind though that it wasn’t TSN.
i’m pretty sure it’s 6.6. it sounds like it’s ever so slightly more than dion.
by walkinvisible on Jul 1, 2009 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m taking the TSN line on it as well. Until TSN says “confirmed” then stuff from the other networks are rumors to me.

Havlat?
I would like to see the flames take a shot at Havlat but they would have to really unload some salary. They have depth on the blue line that could open some room. Havlat has what we need. Great offensively, tremendous speed and tenacity. Plays a sound two-way game. Can play either wing position.
