Calgary Flames

Draft – day 2

Published

on

I’ll add the Flames newest additions to this post as they come in.

Ryan Howse – 74th overall – LW

A 31 goal scorer in the WHL last year, Howse is somewhat small (5’11”), but was the top point getter for a terrible Chilliwack Bruins club. His assist total and plus/minus were lousy (13 and -24), but mainly because the team was so awful. Kind of looks like a poor mans Landon Ferraro.

Update – Mike Remmerde doesn't like Howse at all:

Henrik Bjorklund – 111th overall – RW

Don't know much about Bjorklund aside from what his prospect sheet says. Interesting to see the Flames double dip in Sweden.

Spencer Bennett – 141st – LW

A big guy out of the BCHL who scored 20 goals and 41 points in 60 games for the Surrey Eagles. Not quite a PPG player in the second rate league means we're getting closer to the bottom of the barrel here. Remmerde says he has good hands and size, but average (at best) skating.

Joni Ortio – 171st – G

There's the goalie I expected. Im glad he was chosen so late. Beyond that, I'm surprised the Flames ventured beyond their typical fishing holes, although given Finland's reputation for developing puck stoppers it shouldn't be too surprising.

Breaking NewsAccording to the FAN960, the Flames have traded Jim Vandermeer to PHX for (get this) Brandon Prust! Good news my friends. Good news.

Gaelan Patterson – 201st – C

A 20 goal, 50 point center for the Saskatoon Blades last year, he was also a decent +31. Probably not a bad player to take a flyer on at the end of the draft.
