Incredibly, the Flames are still in a position to take the NW division, which seemed like a distant and fading dream just a few days ago. With the Canucks somehow failing to secure wins against the Oilers and the woeful Avs, a victory tonight and against those same Vancouver villains would pretty much wrap things up for Calgary when it comes to third in the conference.

Given their performance and spate of injuries the last month, that's perhaps all the Flames can ask of the hockey gods right now.

LA is a club we're all going to fear in a year or two, but they aren't there yet. That said, there isn't a team in the league the Flames can take for granted right now. The big guns are shooting blanks, the power play evokes guffaws in NY Rangers fans, Kipper is being compared to Tommy Salo by Oilers fans and Todd Bertuzzi.  Just…Todd Bertuzzi. Oh…and Robyn Regehr and Cory Sarich are down "indefinitely", while Dustin Boyd plies his trade on the farm because the organization doesn't have enough cap space to recall him.

What a clusterfu**.

Notes:

– On the bright side, I think the Flames are in line for an offensive explosion a la the Anaheim Ducks at some point in the near future. So there's that.

– Warren Peters has been recalled by the team, while Negrin has been sent back down to the farm. Now the Flames have 2/3 of a 4th line! Woo-hoo!

– Since this complaint seems apropos: aside from Rhett Warrener's salary, which contract looks like the most egregious waste of cap space for the Flames currently? Jim Vandermeer (2.3/year)? Wayne Primeau (1.4/year)? Andre Roy (550k/year)?
