Gamethread #3 - Hawks @ Flames
Chicago Blackhawks at Calgary Flames, Apr 20, 2009 6:30 PM PDT
Enjoy the injection of fanciful sentimentality and can-do-ism below? Great...
But now we're back to the real stuff. Flames are down by 2 to a club they haven't once beat this season - or even scored more than 2 goals on. Regehr and Sarich are still injured and the PP, while no longer oh-fer, still has all the poise and organization of gaggle of toddlers at recess.
To air a dreadful cliche, this is a must win game - that is, if the Flames have any designs of coming back in this series. Or at least squeezing one more home date out of the first round for their owners, who spent a lot of money on this 5th placed roster this season. They probably owe them that at least. On the other hand, if a contingent in the dressing is working on getting Keenan ousted, this would be an ideal game to throw...
Good news:
- Word from practice this morning is that Patrick Kane is a "game-time decision". Kane hasn't been Toews or Havlat good so far, but he is a significant cog in the Hawks offensive machine. His absence could only help Calgary's cause.
- Mike Keenan was seen running with these lines today:
Bork - Old man - Jarmoe
Squid - The Chin - Sore Thumb
Glengarry Glencross - No-lli Score-nin - Mo(N)sster*
Pluggers
Which closely matches my own thoughts on the matter. Here's hoping Keenan sticks with them for more than 5 shifts.
*(nicknames used to amuse long time readers and confuse passing enemy fans).
Bad News:
Anders Eriksson, curiously, declared to the media throng that he's playing. He had put in a few reps with Dion Phaneuf during the morning skate.
"I’m in tonight. Playing tonight," said Eriksson. "You’ve got to give the old guys a day off in between games. But I’m back in. I’m excited. I think it was good to sit back and see and watch the game the other night just to see what’s happening. Hopefully, I can bring that in tonight.
This might actually be good news, depending on how Keenan deploys ol' Bubba. Of course, since Iron Mike can't seem to contain himself when Anders is in the line-up, I wouldn't count on it. Twelve minutes of Eriksson against nobodies = good. 20 minutes against anything better than nobodies = trouble.
- Also, looks like Lundmark is the odd man out tonight. That sucks for a guy who had really proven to be a useful player down the stretch for this club. If there was any justice, Bertuzzi would be the healthy scratch this evening.

i would accept “superman” for “chin” (obvious reasons), and would prefer “dustin timberlake” for the the pluggers line centre.
can you please tell me who’s in for “third time’s a charm” ? is it “the king” or “WoPete” (this is a “MoPete” reference for anyone who watches basketball/was a raptors fan three years ago).
also, i’m not sure who “sat for pardy” is but i’m pretty sure vandy’s on the blueline. ;)
Watching the Caps game right now...
…Ovechkin looks like a force of nature out there. Anyone remember when Iginla used to seem that way?
i presume this will be the place to be once again this evening…. in which case, i’d like to point out that pj stock’s playoff beard is coming in nicely…. ;)
i disagree entirely.
on a lighter note (if you can get lighter than pj stock), i saw your doppleganger at the vrri today.
Ugh.
Not good

No kidding. That’s the scoring line from the very beginning of the season. Surprise, surprise, it generates some scoring chances.
Strange what happens when you put your top centre with your top wingers. Who’d have thunk it?

Our defensive coverage needs to be much better. We let them have way too much room to work when they have pressure on.

it’s swiss cheese period. we need gio/regehr or more healthiness

“He can’t be stopped.” Mike Keenan said about Bert this year. But he failed to finish his sentence:
“…from making stupid, backhand passes.”
That was the point where I thought, “yup, he’s crazier that a shithouse rat.”

Wasn’t that in the Donavan/kobesew days?
by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions
OK, let's look at that play
Bertuzzi makes a rare good physical play, and gets a scoring chance. His pea brain decides the refs are blind and he can get away with anything since he’s a good player, so he high-sticks a guy away from the puck.
BIGGGGG BODYYYY PRESENCEEEEE
Wow…Kipper flops at the side of the net and almost hands them another one.
And the hawks hit their 2nd post.
I think that Kipper has been over committing all season long. He’s always sliding further then he needs to.

It’s not our problem we are down 2-0. It’s the hot goaltending of the Khabibulin. We should stop being so hard on Jokinen and Bertuzzi. It’s not them, it’s him.
If Chicago still had Darren Pang we’d be up 2-0 with Joke and Bert with atleast 10 points.

Im not going to give a free ride to Jarome, either. I think he had maybe 2 good shifts in that period. Six minutes of ice, zero shots. Just not enough out of him.
Yeah I miss the days when he would draw 2 guys over to him and he would power through them into the slot for a shot or pass.
by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Fair enough
But in fairness to him, it must be tough playing withthe shit rotating linemates he’s dealt. His best two shifts were those with Langkow, and they generated chances.
no, seriously. there are cross-crease passes but NOBODY in red out front of the net. EVER…. waht’s up with that ?
Well look at Detroit it obviously doesn’t work for them.

Just go hard to the damn net for once.
by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions
That view behind the net really showed Iggy’s sloppy play. He missed the pass and lost the puck, because he was looking for the next play before he had made the previous one.
i honestly cannot explain what makes jarome terrible this year, other than (at this point) it’s confidence lost.

Never mind this crap PP
I can’t believe that assface in the Bertuzzi jersey just insdie the blueline at the left of your screen is still standing up when the camera comes by. It’s playoffs!

Bertuzzi missed that pass from Iggy because it was on his forehand. We know that Bert is only good on the back hand.

The Flames can’t pass, can’t shoot, can’t skate. Are they actually TRYING to lose? Those two powerplays were worse than the St.Louis powerplays last night

It's a bad sign when ...
Negative to positive comments in a string like this go at a ratio of about 150:1. I mean, we’re some negative bastards, but …
we’re totally in this game, we just need to make smarter decisions so that this doesn’t end up like the last 2 games!
The Hawks must feel like the Flames did in that 4-1 loss to Vancouver in the Division Title game right now.
you might notice i’m never right when i guarantee shit. it’s one of those stupidstitions.

So who’s ready for the shutdown defense? (That is, the Flames shut down their defense to give up a couple of goals)
The Flames may actually win a second period this series. That would be a positive. It’s amazing how much Chicago dominates puck possession. Everytime they hem the Flames in and then we break out, I think OH….TWO on ONE…..then the screen pans over and their are 2 Hawks “D”. Then I remember….god we suck right now
Bert and Jarome, obviously. They’re unstoppable…

Well, we're ahead. That's good
I wasn’t overly impressed with that period, but what the hell.
At least we aren’t the Habs I guess.
Uh, don't speak too soon
There’s a whole third period ahead, and I smell an ineffective 2-2-1 on the way.
Look at Kobasew’s two goals in the first four games of the playoffs. He was definitely expendable at the price of Brad Stuart, just like Ference was absolutely less valuable than Wayne Primeau. At the time AND now.
corsi thus far.
Doesn’t paint a pretty picture. I expect it to get worse now that the Flames are ahead going into the 3rd.
Yeah, I can’t see Olli’s plus 7 holding up. And Iginla and Langkow, uh, not good at all.
by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions
I hadn’t been following the Sharks-Anaheim series. I’m not Ducks fan, but I’ll be thrilled to see the Sharks go down in the first round. (Partly because they’re the one team ahead of us on the “most overrated” chart right now, as long as they don’t win a cup.)
I remember looking at Hiller’s numbers midway through the season. Anaheim’s got a steal of a goaltender there.
They’ve had 2 consecutive back-ups (Bryzgalov) that were about as good as Giguere. Nice luxury.
by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions
To attempt to provide an answer to this, both he and Glencross are getting lost in the shuffle. Keenster will DS Iginla and Jokey at every opportunity, and with the lines being adjusted shift to shift, they’re getting shorted.
Not a good reason, but might be the reason.
It’s pretty disconcerting to see the Hawks winning the possession battle against the Flames on home ice. Calgary’s primary strength during the season – ES play – isn’t even winning out here.
They’ve been in the ditch for 6 weeks straight. At some point that’s not a bad patch, just who you are.

Nice! Whodda thunk we would have come out aggressively to start the third? Not me.
Also nice to see a rebound go right onto our stick for a change.
Smartest comment by the color man tonight: When the Flames are all doing the same forecheck/dump in game, they do well.
It took the Flames a while to figure it out. There’s nothing wrong with Dump and Chase, especially if the other team is good at slowing you down over the blue line. The Flyers took two games to figure that out against Pittsburgh. They got it right yesterday, and look at the results.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

I don’t know if its been mentioned yet but the last time the hawks played the flames at the Dome in a playoff game I believe it was Jarome’s second NHL game.

Well...it wont be a sweep at least.
The support players came through this evening. And Kipper was good.
Parallels?
The Flyers lost game 1, the Flames lost game 1.
The Flyers lost game 2, the Flames lost game 2.
The Flyers won game 3, the Flames won game 3.
May the parallels continue, for the good of both teams.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I’m surprised at that, actually. I guess Chicago got most of their leads in shots on those last PPs.

Way I see it, math is about right after three games. Flames have won three periods, Hawks have won six, and it’s 2-1 in games.
Good Night and Good Hockey
I’m tired. Off to bed. Great game.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Well it was scrambly tonight, but you clearly saw tonight what happens when you have competent goaltending.
Jarome’s mad now, hopefully all those myths about him “needing to be fired up” are true… won’t hold my breath.
Third line was the obvious MVP, but I thought Sarich quietly had a capable game. It wasn’t mistake free by any means. But, he was the best of the D, I thought.
Vandermeer and Aucoin continue to be bad. Jokinen looked… like a difference maker? Wtf?
Jokinen turned things around after that terrible first period.
Bertuzzi needs to be sat. He’s a total waste.
Sarich is a really interesting case. He was struggling when matched with Regehr on the top line, but I thought he really improved his play when he dropped down to lesser competition. And he’s being called on to take on tougher guys, and he’s holding up. Pretty similar to Conroy, actually. Reduced role → increased confidence → better play, I guess.
Indeed. He’s starting to play to his contract for sure. And the thing is, you can totally tell the difference that having him makes (calmer when he’s on the ice, scramblier when he’s off) – which tells you how different this series could be with Regehr.
okay, so seriously ?
that bertuzzi tap on keenan —the one that said “wait a second, coach. think about it” -- was sortof fascinating.
could you imagine ANYONE else doing that ? boyd ? iginla, even ???
there is a relationship there. a friendship or something.

Wow - interesting read of the comments...
I had a hockey game so tape delayed the feed, and just finished watching. And my impressions during the entire game (other than the first 5 minutes) are so completely out of step with the comments I just read. I’ve already said I’m Mr. Optimistic, but seriously, that was as negative a set of comments overall for a well played win that I’ve ever seen. I guess most everyone is seeing Chicago completely dominating the Flames this series – everyone is entitled to their opinion, so that’s cool. But I’m seeing a well-played, evenly matched series where the home team has won every game…and the next one’s in Calgary.
Oh well, it’s always good to read others to get contrary opinions, so I’ll be back. But reading most of the comments was pretty disappointing…
I’ve never understood why people have expectations of “comments”. Especially gamethread comments, where stuff is said off the cuff without reference to perspective. It doesn’t make me happy or sad to see negative or positive comments. I just find it interesting either way, depending on how I saw the game.
Anyways, I like what I saw from some quarters in the game (support players, defensemen, Kipper), but there were still some areas that could improve (PP, Iginla, Langkow). I thought CHI deserved better through 2 periods but Flames were probably full value in the third. I like the teams chances if Jarome would awaken from his slumber if they can continue like this.
by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Actually, reading over the comments and it surprises ME how negative they are.
Maybe it’s the nature of the beast. Either the very good or very bad is expressed. the in-between isn’t bothered to be communicated. Im guessing if you looked at a gamethread at CP it wojuld be similar tonight.
Anyways, I actually came away with a better overall impression of the game than was communicated here I’d say.
by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions
I thought the team played well, even when it was tied. But we all seem to use the comments more to vent about small mistakes than to praise good small plays like, “nice hit by connie” or “smart play by leopold”
Pretty much. Part of it maybe the last 6 weeks of relative futility causing frustration. Also, I make for a terrible cheerleader, even at the best of times.
by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions
I think what happened was that we saw a lot of “the same old bullshit” last night – Jokinen being terrible (in the first), Bertuzzi being terrible, etc. As a fan that really makes watching difficult, as these factors have cost us in the way of losses and post-game grief. Hence a lot of the negative comments.
Overall though I’d say the Flames held their own.
Is Bourque out?
Does anyone know … is Bourque Injured now? Burrish is definitely getting suspended. You wanna talk about a suspendable offense of cross checking to the head and factor in it was in the last minute of a game out of hand (ie sending a message) I cant imagine how he wont be out a game or two. I wonder if that was some sort of retribution. Chicagos full of shit Kanes not out with the flu, hes totally hurting after those hits by Bourque. Its just easier to say “Flu” than “Our Star player is a whiney little bitch who is too small to play in the NHL”
