Gamethread #3 - Hawks @ Flames

Chicago Blackhawks at Calgary Flames, Apr 20, 2009 6:30 PM PDT

Enjoy the injection of fanciful sentimentality and can-do-ism below? Great...

But now we're back to the real stuff. Flames are down by 2 to a club they haven't once beat this season - or even scored more than 2 goals on. Regehr and Sarich are still injured and the PP, while no longer oh-fer, still has all the poise and organization of gaggle of toddlers at recess.

To air a dreadful cliche, this is a must win game - that is, if the Flames have any designs of coming back in this series. Or at least squeezing one more home date out of the first round for their owners, who spent a lot of money on this 5th placed roster this season. They probably owe them that at least. On the other hand, if a contingent in the dressing is working on getting Keenan ousted, this would be an ideal game to throw...

Good news:

- Word from practice this morning is that Patrick Kane is a "game-time decision". Kane hasn't been Toews or Havlat good so far, but he is a significant cog in the Hawks offensive machine. His absence could only help Calgary's cause.

- Mike Keenan was seen running with these lines today:

Bork - Old man - Jarmoe

Squid - The Chin - Sore Thumb

Glengarry Glencross - No-lli Score-nin - Mo(N)sster*

Pluggers

Which closely matches my own thoughts on the matter. Here's hoping Keenan sticks with them for more than 5 shifts.

*(nicknames used to amuse long time readers and confuse passing enemy fans).

Bad News:

Anders Eriksson, curiously, declared to the media throng that he's playing. He had put in a few reps with Dion Phaneuf during the morning skate.

"I’m in tonight. Playing tonight," said Eriksson. "You’ve got to give the old guys a day off in between games. But I’m back in. I’m excited. I think it was good to sit back and see and watch the game the other night just to see what’s happening. Hopefully, I can bring that in tonight.

This might actually be good news, depending on how Keenan deploys ol' Bubba. Of course, since Iron Mike can't seem to contain himself when Anders is in the line-up, I wouldn't count on it. Twelve minutes of Eriksson against nobodies = good. 20 minutes against anything better than nobodies = trouble.

- Also, looks like Lundmark is the odd man out tonight. That sucks for a guy who had really proven to be a useful player down the stretch for this club. If there was any justice, Bertuzzi would be the healthy scratch this evening.

“Curly” – “Sat for Pardy” – “Cherry’s Chap”

"It's a great day for hockey" - BBJ

by jealous broadcaster on Apr 20, 2009 2:52 PM PDT reply actions

I would also accept “Dustin Timberlake” for “Curly”.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 3:03 PM PDT reply actions

At first I couldn’t differentiate between Chin and Old Man… we do have two old man centres… or at least the younger one looks older than the older one

by R O on Apr 20, 2009 3:20 PM PDT reply actions

i would accept “superman” for “chin” (obvious reasons), and would prefer “dustin timberlake” for the the pluggers line centre.

can you please tell me who’s in for “third time’s a charm” ? is it “the king” or “WoPete” (this is a “MoPete” reference for anyone who watches basketball/was a raptors fan three years ago).

also, i’m not sure who “sat for pardy” is but i’m pretty sure vandy’s on the blueline. ;)

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 3:34 PM PDT reply actions

(ohyeah, and it’s rarely used but “fez” should take the LW on the first line)

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 3:34 PM PDT reply actions

(ohyeah, and the re-insertion of eriksson should surprise nobody. i called it halfway thru the second period when sarich hadn’t taken a shift. it DOES show how smart eriksson is, though, since i’m pretty sure it’s a coach’s job to announce the lineup).

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 3:36 PM PDT reply actions

Bork bork bork!

Classic.

I’ll let myself out.

by fortybillion on Apr 20, 2009 3:52 PM PDT reply actions

Watching the Caps game right now...

…Ovechkin looks like a force of nature out there. Anyone remember when Iginla used to seem that way?

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 4:29 PM PDT reply actions

i presume this will be the place to be once again this evening…. in which case, i’d like to point out that pj stock’s playoff beard is coming in nicely…. ;)

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 5:07 PM PDT reply actions

I watched him for the first time in awhile the other night. I noticed he still can’t deliver highlights with any sort of poise or grace.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions

speaking of which, is everyone growing nice beards (or legs for those of the other gender)?

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I have an existing beard, if that counts.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions

i disagree entirely.

on a lighter note (if you can get lighter than pj stock), i saw your doppleganger at the vrri today.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 5:46 PM PDT reply actions

It’ll be interesting to see how Keenan deploys the Moss-Joker-Glencross line. Assuming he sticks with it for any length of time.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:37 PM PDT reply actions

Is that big-ass flag a new thing?

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

Also, FYI everyone, I busted out my third jersey of the series for tonight, after my 2008 Iginla and 2004 no-name didn’t work. Currently wearing my horsehead Regehr. He can’t play, but I can wear his jersey, which is almost as good.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

Uh, by the way, can anyone explain why Keenan REFUSES to play Iginla with Langkow?

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

No idea. He seems to want Langkow to play with Bertuzzi.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Panic time with Jokinen et al on the ice.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:45 PM PDT reply actions

And now Jokinen takes a stupid penalty at the wrong end of the ice.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:45 PM PDT reply actions

Great shift all around, after he pyloned himself in the D-zone and let Toews skate around him skills-competition styles. AND NOW THEY SCORE! THIS IS GREAT!

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

That didn’t take long.

Ripping start boys.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

haha! WTF is Aucoin doing on that play???

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I can’t blame Olli for that soft call. That was such a lame penalty. I`d like to see a penalty every time someone gets bumped after the whistle.

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Ugh.

Not good

Welcome to Smashville, Tennessee.

by Aditya T (smashville) on Apr 20, 2009 6:47 PM PDT reply actions

See? Did you see Iginla find Langkow there for the good chance? Every time they’re on the ice together now.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

at what point does jokinen get lynched by flamesfans ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

By the way

I’m a Preds fan first, Flames fan second. Since the Preds were ousted, GO FLAMES!

Welcome to Smashville, Tennessee.

by Aditya T (smashville) on Apr 20, 2009 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

And now, he skates into a too many men penalty. What a fucking moron.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:49 PM PDT reply actions

Wow. This is how not to play hockey. Absolutely abysmal.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:49 PM PDT reply actions

hahahaha it’s pure comedy

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

They look completely lost, and they aren’t waiting for the second to stink.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

i hope lombardi is watching and laughing

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

if nystrom, peters, sarich and boyd are playing…. who’s not ?? eriksson ????

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:51 PM PDT reply actions

“Experience” breeds poise does it?

I dont see it.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:51 PM PDT reply actions

not if you put toews in that sentence

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:51 PM PDT reply actions

Is that Jokinen on the fucking PK??

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:51 PM PDT reply actions

YES

I would accept a mid-game firing of Keenan right now.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

so what team do you guys wanna support next year ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

The Eric Nystroms.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

you know who’s been worse than Joks so far… Pierre F’n Mcguire!

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

you know who’s been better than jokinen ? EVERYBODY

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

WOOHOO.

Nystrom? Didn’t see that coming.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

that would be your defacto 4th line. which is cheaper, faster and better than your 1st line.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

Play Glenny the whole game please.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

True

Good play by all guys there. Nice pass by GlenX, and nice timing by Peters providing the screen/distraction.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Thank you Glencross. Great play to set that up.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

I think he’s reading this gamethread.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

How do you think this team would perform with Jacques Lemaire as the coach?

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

Im sure it would have a better PP, for one.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

There’s guys I’d rather have than Keenan but he isn’t one of them.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m with you on that one Robert. Minnesota didn’t come close to the Cup in a lot of years.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

You see, it’s a double negative. The abysmalness of it will create the power of Gretzky.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Gretzky as Phoenix coach, more like.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Phaneuf has been a big, throbbing liability tonight.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:55 PM PDT reply actions

Reverting to the mean, maybe?

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Or still hurt, perhaps. Either way, he’s getting eaten alive by Toews.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Bourque gets to babysit both Jokinen and Bert now. On the other hand, at least they’re sequestered on one line.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 6:58 PM PDT reply actions

Exactly. And why not let him elevate your most dangerous player until it’s desperate?

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Because Jokinen is “better” in the mind of our coach?

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

No kidding. That’s the scoring line from the very beginning of the season. Surprise, surprise, it generates some scoring chances.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Strange what happens when you put your top centre with your top wingers. Who’d have thunk it?

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Looks like we’ve settled in here. Thank God.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

Our defensive coverage needs to be much better. We let them have way too much room to work when they have pressure on.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 7:02 PM PDT reply actions

For sure. The D-zone is swiss cheese thus far.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

it’s swiss cheese period. we need gio/regehr or more healthiness

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

YAY

Bertuzzi spinarama into the corner. He’s the best.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:03 PM PDT reply actions

“He can’t be stopped.” Mike Keenan said about Bert this year. But he failed to finish his sentence:

“…from making stupid, backhand passes.”

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

That was the point where I thought, “yup, he’s crazier that a shithouse rat.”

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I use the Bertuzzi spinarama at wednesday night ball hockey and it’s gold!

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m at the point where if it doesn’t turn into an odd man rush the other way, I accept it. That isn’t good.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

remember when we used to have a wicked forecheck ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:05 PM PDT reply actions

Wasn’t that in the Donavan/kobesew days?

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Annnnddd…Bert takes a penalty. In the offensive zone.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

At least it ensures he’s off the ice.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey atleast he’s consistent.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

OK, let's look at that play

Bertuzzi makes a rare good physical play, and gets a scoring chance. His pea brain decides the refs are blind and he can get away with anything since he’s a good player, so he high-sticks a guy away from the puck.

BIGGGGG BODYYYY PRESENCEEEEE

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

DID YOU SEE HIM HIT THAT GUY?! IT WAS LIKE….PCHAAA BOOOOM CRAAHHHH

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s hilarious. Every time Bert does something I like this year, he erases it as completely as possible by doing 5 things terribly.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow…Kipper flops at the side of the net and almost hands them another one.

And the hawks hit their 2nd post.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

I think that Kipper has been over committing all season long. He’s always sliding further then he needs to.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’ve noticed this as well. I need to watch some game tape to see if that was his style in the good years.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

what’s up with the let’s go oilers chant ??? we haven’t heard GO FLAMES GO at all yet

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

Can anyone…ANYONE…explain to me Jokinen on the PK?

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

He was a high draft pick so that means he’s good.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I bet anything it’s “he’ doesn’t seem into the game, let’s get him going”

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Can anyone…ANYONE…explain to me Jokinen on the CALGARY FLAMES ????

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:10 PM PDT reply actions

how often does Jarome get the puck taken off his stick in the neutral zone these days?? Every shift?

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Iginla, you are verrry slow.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

um. he looked good on that play.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

First decent think Jokinen has done all series.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

You’re probably right on both counts.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I just thought you were channeling Don Cherry.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Jokinen makes a nice move, giving himself a clear shot into the pads. Sigh.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

Better than him drifting into the corner and losing the puck I guess.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh for fuck sakes...

Iginla with Bertuzzi and Jokinen. I feel like Im on candid camera.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

honestly ? keenan is nuts. put glenX on that line. or moss. not iggy.
IT. DOESNT. EFFING. WORK.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

Wow, that was a classic no-look backhand pass by Bertuzzi. I mean . . . classic.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

Especially because it was near the offensive blueline.

What a useless tit.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

last minute chicago goal, anyone ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:15 PM PDT reply actions

There’s the icing call.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

And there’s Jokinen taking the d-zone draw.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Darn Jokinen not hurt.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

‘jokinen just got on the bench by that one’

That’s because his huge, pumpkin head has it’s own gravitational pull.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

sputnik ? orange on a toothpick ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

He’ll cry himself tonight on his HUGE PILLOW.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Well that went a lot better than it looked like it was going to go.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:20 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah. Flames should be happy they escaped that period tied. They came out flat, took 3 STUPID penalties and the Hawks hit a bunch of posts. On another night, it could be 3-0 CHI right now.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Dudes, according to this commercial, this NHL “Portal” gives you an “all-access pass to the playoffs.” Guy in the ad appears to be actually in the dressing rooms. Perhaps we should drop by there and do something about Jokinen, Keenan and Bertuzzi.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:23 PM PDT reply actions

I was going to suggest a knee-capping. It’s a longer term solution.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m more shifty than violent, Kent, but you’re not out of line, given the circumstances.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not our problem we are down 2-0. It’s the hot goaltending of the Khabibulin. We should stop being so hard on Jokinen and Bertuzzi. It’s not them, it’s him.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

If Chicago still had Darren Pang we’d be up 2-0 with Joke and Bert with atleast 10 points.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

“It’s not you, baby , it’s me”.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

hahahahaha…… awesome…. (that’s a joke, right ?)

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Im not going to give a free ride to Jarome, either. I think he had maybe 2 good shifts in that period. Six minutes of ice, zero shots. Just not enough out of him.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:33 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah I miss the days when he would draw 2 guys over to him and he would power through them into the slot for a shot or pass.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

But in fairness to him, it must be tough playing withthe shit rotating linemates he’s dealt. His best two shifts were those with Langkow, and they generated chances.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Jokinen? First line?

Makes perfect sense to me.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:39 PM PDT reply actions

so hey, when they talk about traffic in front of the net, they’re just kidding right ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:40 PM PDT reply actions

That kinda sums up Dion’s year.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:40 PM PDT reply actions

Question

At some point, does it make sense to send out someone to “shadow” Toews, Avery-style?

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:40 PM PDT reply actions

Glencross? I’d pick a defenseman, but nobody can do it without Regehr.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

The more they hit, the better chances they get.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 7:40 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, they need to keep up the intensity.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

no, seriously. there are cross-crease passes but NOBODY in red out front of the net. EVER…. waht’s up with that ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:41 PM PDT reply actions

Well look at Detroit it obviously doesn’t work for them.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions

wow. mis-read by bert there (shockingly)

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:42 PM PDT reply actions

Just go hard to the damn net for once.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Bourque still isn’t up to game speed yet.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:42 PM PDT reply actions

iggy’s floating too

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

What’s with guys not having a playoff beard. I think that’s the main problem right there.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

Looks like Keenan is eschewing regular trios tonight. Almost every shift is different. Trying to confuse Quenneville’s match-ups.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

people that used to crash the net are now just floating… learning lessons from bert, perhaps ???

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

Way to protect the puck, Jokey.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

That’s just a terrible play. Go wide or dump the puck in, but don’t get it poked off your stick.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Haha…there’s Jokinen’s patented skate into coverage in the neutral zone.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

it’s like he taking lessons from Bert.

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe they’ll start playing now since the PA just played the first song from their pregame skate

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:45 PM PDT reply actions

hm. maybe they’re all looking forward to golfing.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:46 PM PDT reply actions

Seriously. Iginla is awful out there.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:48 PM PDT reply actions

No reason not to cradle that pass.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

dude, the FLAMES are awful out there

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:49 PM PDT reply actions

That view behind the net really showed Iggy’s sloppy play. He missed the pass and lost the puck, because he was looking for the next play before he had made the previous one.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 7:49 PM PDT reply actions

i honestly cannot explain what makes jarome terrible this year, other than (at this point) it’s confidence lost.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

One Hawk, three Flames…Hawk gets the puck.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:49 PM PDT reply actions

BEST. POWERPLAY. EVER.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:49 PM PDT reply actions

Never mind this crap PP

I can’t believe that assface in the Bertuzzi jersey just insdie the blueline at the left of your screen is still standing up when the camera comes by. It’s playoffs!

where’s the guy in front of the goddamn net

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

i’m pretty sure i could coach this team better right now

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

Bertuzzi missed that pass from Iggy because it was on his forehand. We know that Bert is only good on the back hand.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

Not to mention that Bertuzzi was looking towards the net. He’s also only good when he’s not looking.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That was a decent shift though.

I wish they could decline.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:52 PM PDT reply actions

I say throw 5 D-men out there on this PP and see what happens. Can’t get any worse, right?

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:52 PM PDT reply actions

do you think we’ve ever started a powerplay with pressure ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:53 PM PDT reply actions

Put Nystrom out there. At least he’s scored in this series.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:53 PM PDT reply actions

exactly… might as well try some new guys with energy!

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m sorry, but who retrieves the puck with that group?

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 7:53 PM PDT reply actions

wow. that was bertuzzi in front of the net, btw. just giving credit where credit is due.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:54 PM PDT reply actions

That’s how you screw a PP. Do nothing and then take an offensive zone penalty at the tail end.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 7:55 PM PDT reply actions

guaranteed goal here. for the bad guys

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 7:55 PM PDT reply actions

One of Bertuzzi or Jokinen is going to score?

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 7:56 PM PDT reply actions

It's a bad sign when ...

Negative to positive comments in a string like this go at a ratio of about 150:1. I mean, we’re some negative bastards, but …

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 8:03 PM PDT reply actions

We’re lucky it’s 1-1 in this game. But there’s just very little to be positive about at this point.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I was just thinking the same, but I would like to add that vs. potential…Nystrom and Peters have been the best on the ice. That’s another bad sign

by LawrenceS on Apr 20, 2009 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

we’re totally in this game, we just need to make smarter decisions so that this doesn’t end up like the last 2 games!

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 8:04 PM PDT reply actions

hahaha. Finally a bad goal on Khabibulin.

Jokinen’s big body totally caused that goal, of course.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 8:05 PM PDT reply actions

actually do have to give Olli some credit on that. bad goal by ’bulin

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions

no kidding, but the shot doesn’t even happen without Jokinen’s effort – and the game stays tied

The Flames may actually win a second period this series. That would be a positive. It’s amazing how much Chicago dominates puck possession. Everytime they hem the Flames in and then we break out, I think OH….TWO on ONE…..then the screen pans over and their are 2 Hawks “D”. Then I remember….god we suck right now

At least we aren’t the Habs I guess.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 8:12 PM PDT reply actions

Uh, don't speak too soon

There’s a whole third period ahead, and I smell an ineffective 2-2-1 on the way.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Naturally. Flames will have to better in the 3rd. Especially in the neutral zone where they made a habit of handing over the puck.

I’d say Iginla has to get better, but Im at the point where I don’t expect that to happen anymore.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty impressed with Sarich’s game so far, considering how wounded he is.

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 8:15 PM PDT reply actions

Look at Kobasew’s two goals in the first four games of the playoffs. He was definitely expendable at the price of Brad Stuart, just like Ference was absolutely less valuable than Wayne Primeau. At the time AND now.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 8:18 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I can’t see Olli’s plus 7 holding up. And Iginla and Langkow, uh, not good at all.

I hadn’t been following the Sharks-Anaheim series. I’m not Ducks fan, but I’ll be thrilled to see the Sharks go down in the first round. (Partly because they’re the one team ahead of us on the “most overrated” chart right now, as long as they don’t win a cup.)

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 8:19 PM PDT reply actions

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

They’ve had 2 consecutive back-ups (Bryzgalov) that were about as good as Giguere. Nice luxury.

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Moss has played only 7:25. Any valid reasons out there?

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 8:19 PM PDT reply actions

To attempt to provide an answer to this, both he and Glencross are getting lost in the shuffle. Keenster will DS Iginla and Jokey at every opportunity, and with the lines being adjusted shift to shift, they’re getting shorted.

Not a good reason, but might be the reason.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Bertuzzi also has more than 12 minutes of ice tonight.

What a waste of time.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s pretty disconcerting to see the Hawks winning the possession battle against the Flames on home ice. Calgary’s primary strength during the season – ES play – isn’t even winning out here.

It took the Flames a while to figure it out. There’s nothing wrong with Dump and Chase, especially if the other team is good at slowing you down over the blue line. The Flyers took two games to figure that out against Pittsburgh. They got it right yesterday, and look at the results.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 8:56 PM PDT reply actions

Kipper’s been solid tonight.

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 8:56 PM PDT reply actions

Not a lot of big saves, not a lot of panic situations. Just calm and competent. Which is all we need right now.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Borque’s first slash had almost no contact on the Hawk stick.

-Colin

by Colin S on Apr 20, 2009 8:56 PM PDT reply actions

Despite the penalties, Bourque’s managed five shots, tied with Moss for most shots.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 8:57 PM PDT reply actions

Indeed. Moss 1st star, Glencross 2nd, Kipper 3rd.

Maybe swap Kipper for Glenc.

Havlat v. Vandermeer is a mismatch. Bad things are bound to happen.

why was dion not skating on that play ?

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

The support players came through this evening. And Kipper was good.

Parallels?

The Flyers lost game 1, the Flames lost game 1.
The Flyers lost game 2, the Flames lost game 2.
The Flyers won game 3, the Flames won game 3.

May the parallels continue, for the good of both teams.

that’s pure satisfaction , sure.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:17 PM PDT reply actions

I’m surprised at that, actually. I guess Chicago got most of their leads in shots on those last PPs.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

It wasn’t any hell at the end of the second, IIRC.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

CORSI doesn’t take PP shots into account I think.

by R O on Apr 20, 2009 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Or EV only , to be more precise.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s what I meant. I think Chicago got 7 of their 17 3rd period shots on the PP.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I still have faith. Flames in 7!

by BIGBADBLAINE on Apr 20, 2009 9:17 PM PDT reply actions

Clawed it back in the third. Jarome and Langkow worst on the team is hard to believe though.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 9:18 PM PDT reply actions

Way I see it, math is about right after three games. Flames have won three periods, Hawks have won six, and it’s 2-1 in games.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 9:18 PM PDT reply actions

GD is equal right now, surprisingly. If ’Bulin falters again, I have to figure the Hawks will start to get scared. Goaltending has been their biggest advantage.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Good Night and Good Hockey

I’m tired. Off to bed. Great game.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 20, 2009 9:20 PM PDT reply actions

okay before you go, duncan fo

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:21 PM PDT reply actions

Well it was scrambly tonight, but you clearly saw tonight what happens when you have competent goaltending.

Jarome’s mad now, hopefully all those myths about him “needing to be fired up” are true… won’t hold my breath.

Third line was the obvious MVP, but I thought Sarich quietly had a capable game. It wasn’t mistake free by any means. But, he was the best of the D, I thought.

Vandermeer and Aucoin continue to be bad. Jokinen looked… like a difference maker? Wtf?

by R O on Apr 20, 2009 9:21 PM PDT reply actions

Jokinen turned things around after that terrible first period.

Bertuzzi needs to be sat. He’s a total waste.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s so weak on the puck. It’s so disheartening to watch.

by R O on Apr 20, 2009 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Sarich is a really interesting case. He was struggling when matched with Regehr on the top line, but I thought he really improved his play when he dropped down to lesser competition. And he’s being called on to take on tougher guys, and he’s holding up. Pretty similar to Conroy, actually. Reduced role → increased confidence → better play, I guess.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed. He’s starting to play to his contract for sure. And the thing is, you can totally tell the difference that having him makes (calmer when he’s on the ice, scramblier when he’s off) – which tells you how different this series could be with Regehr.

by R O on Apr 20, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Does anyone remember how Sarich played against the Sharks last year? I remember the hit, of course, but I don’t remember if that was the rule or the exception.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

just want to second the love for Sarich this game. he played simple and solid.

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

okay, so seriously ?
that bertuzzi tap on keenan —the one that said “wait a second, coach. think about it” -- was sortof fascinating.
could you imagine ANYONE else doing that ? boyd ? iginla, even ???

there is a relationship there. a friendship or something.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:23 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I agree. That was really interesting … perhaps Keenan’s a father figure there. Wouldn’t be the craziest thing.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn’t catch it, when was that tap? During the last-minute scrum?

by R O on Apr 20, 2009 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah — Keenan started to angrily head towards the ice to say/do something, then Bert stuck his hand out, said something, and Keenan laid off.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I think I referred to it once in a fit of anger as “bi-curious love”.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

it was truly out of character for a coach/player relationship. but probably explains A LOT

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Is Keenan Bert’s Ernie?

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

ahahaha. Gold.

Bert knows from experience that doing stupid things when you’re angry is bad.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Bert likes it behind the back, no looking.

Okay, sorry, I’m going to stop now.

by ngthagg on Apr 20, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

i hate wearing the jrXL in public

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

It’s called commitment. Wearing the Gio 5 would be like a Bertuzzi spinarama backhand at this point.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah but if i wear gio to the game, and we lose, i can always come back with the jr XL for G5

i hope it’s not spelled like that….

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Stop trying to justify. You don’t break up a winning lineup.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

but you DO keep going back to the jokinen-iginla duo

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

okay fine. jrXL. can i BRING gio in case a mid-game change is needed ???

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Only if there’s a three-goal gap in the wrong direction.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

this is seriously gonna keep me up for the next two nights. i’m pretty sure the gio jersey has only lost once at the dome this year, while the jr XL has lost a lot of games…. i’m seriously gonna lose sleep over this.

As you should. It’s a tough call, and I can’t imagine what’s more important than this decision right now. But I’m confident you’ll come through in the end.

by duncan on Apr 20, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed. As a parting thought, Jokinen gets away from Iginla tonight and plays better. Langkow plays as poorly as we’ve seen in a while with Iginla. Is Jarome the carrier? NIght, all.

by Robert Cleave on Apr 20, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Good question. The big guy was awful tonight. Keenan resorted to benching him in the 3rd.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

To be fair, Iggy and Langkow were generating some chances in the first. Maybe they just had a bad game, but I want Keenan to start that line more. It can’t hurt – we’ve had enough of the Olli/Iggy experiment.

by walkinvisible on Apr 20, 2009 9:46 PM PDT reply actions

Wow - interesting read of the comments...

I had a hockey game so tape delayed the feed, and just finished watching. And my impressions during the entire game (other than the first 5 minutes) are so completely out of step with the comments I just read. I’ve already said I’m Mr. Optimistic, but seriously, that was as negative a set of comments overall for a well played win that I’ve ever seen. I guess most everyone is seeing Chicago completely dominating the Flames this series – everyone is entitled to their opinion, so that’s cool. But I’m seeing a well-played, evenly matched series where the home team has won every game…and the next one’s in Calgary.

Oh well, it’s always good to read others to get contrary opinions, so I’ll be back. But reading most of the comments was pretty disappointing…

by maimster on Apr 20, 2009 11:02 PM PDT reply actions

I’ve never understood why people have expectations of “comments”. Especially gamethread comments, where stuff is said off the cuff without reference to perspective. It doesn’t make me happy or sad to see negative or positive comments. I just find it interesting either way, depending on how I saw the game.

Anyways, I like what I saw from some quarters in the game (support players, defensemen, Kipper), but there were still some areas that could improve (PP, Iginla, Langkow). I thought CHI deserved better through 2 periods but Flames were probably full value in the third. I like the teams chances if Jarome would awaken from his slumber if they can continue like this.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, reading over the comments and it surprises ME how negative they are.

Maybe it’s the nature of the beast. Either the very good or very bad is expressed. the in-between isn’t bothered to be communicated. Im guessing if you looked at a gamethread at CP it wojuld be similar tonight.

Anyways, I actually came away with a better overall impression of the game than was communicated here I’d say.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought the team played well, even when it was tied. But we all seem to use the comments more to vent about small mistakes than to praise good small plays like, “nice hit by connie” or “smart play by leopold”

by mr_daveyt on Apr 20, 2009 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty much. Part of it maybe the last 6 weeks of relative futility causing frustration. Also, I make for a terrible cheerleader, even at the best of times.

by Kent Wilson on Apr 20, 2009 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough – I think I was fired up after the game (they beat the Hawks, finally, for crying out loud!). You’re right that gamethread comments are very ‘raw’ and reading them after the fact probably isn’t too productive!

by maimster on Apr 21, 2009 6:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I think what happened was that we saw a lot of “the same old bullshit” last night – Jokinen being terrible (in the first), Bertuzzi being terrible, etc. As a fan that really makes watching difficult, as these factors have cost us in the way of losses and post-game grief. Hence a lot of the negative comments.

Overall though I’d say the Flames held their own.

by R O on Apr 21, 2009 7:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Is Bourque out?

Does anyone know … is Bourque Injured now? Burrish is definitely getting suspended. You wanna talk about a suspendable offense of cross checking to the head and factor in it was in the last minute of a game out of hand (ie sending a message) I cant imagine how he wont be out a game or two. I wonder if that was some sort of retribution. Chicagos full of shit Kanes not out with the flu, hes totally hurting after those hits by Bourque. Its just easier to say “Flu” than “Our Star player is a whiney little bitch who is too small to play in the NHL”

by Brent G. on Apr 21, 2009 7:48 AM PDT reply actions

One of the MSM (Herald or Sun, don’t remember which) is suggesting gamesmanship by Keenan which I tend to agree with. Bourque was probably hurt but I don’t think it was enough to keep him out of the lineup.

by R O on Apr 21, 2009 8:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Regardless, it was a stupid move by Burish.
