Flames Claim Lawrence Nycholat

Ever since the Flames 03/04 Stanley Cup run, where the club experienced a multitude of injuries on the back-end, Sutter has made a point of acquiring some nominal depth blueliiner at or around the deadline every year. Last season, it was Jim Vandermeer. The year before, David Hale.

And this year, it's former Sen/Canuck Lawrence Nycholat.

Make no mistake, this guy slots in at around 8 or 9 on Calgary's depth chart. Nycholat is 29 years old and has 45 NHL games to his credit. He's put up decent numbers in the AHL, but never really done anything in the big league. His 14 games this year is too small a sample for his underlying ES stats to tell us anything, but that's not really here nor there with this kind of acquisition. Let's call him "Brennan Evans insurance".

With Bertuzzi now out, one can almost guarantee that Nycholat isn’t the only player we pick up. I wonder if we grab any of the many forwards who appeared on the waiver wire today?

Satan would be a natural Bert replacement, assuming he’s available by the time the Flames get their turn. Morrison has always looked good against the Flames too, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Sutter is tempted to pick him up (even though he’s been pretty much horrible otherwise this year).

Actually…I can see Sutter liking Aaron Voros as well.

Nycholat was a really strong junior defenceman … much better than Brennan Evans, so I think he’s a bit above that. He’s got some skill, kind of a poor man’s Giordano, really. But based on what I’ve seen, I’d at least be comfortable putting him into an NHL game. Which wasn’t the case with good ol’ B.E. back in 04.

Well, that’s why he’s insurance against another Brennan Evans making an appearance.

Ah, now I get it. I thought you meant Brennan Evans-style insurance. OK. Back to drinking now.

To be fair, I wasn’t very clear.
