Calgary Flames at Pittsburgh Penguins, Mar 25, 2009 4:30 PM PDT

Penguins-1-onwater_medium

Flames @ Penguins

5:30, TSN locally

Enemy Perspective: Pensburgh

10 games left. Home stretch.

And thank god. March has been a tough one for the Flames. Imagine if they hadn't pulled out two improbable wins against the Red Wings...

Canucks are 3 points shy and Calgary is facing another back2back set, the first game of which is this evening. Pittsburgh is probably one of the hottest teams in the league currently having gone 7-1-2 in their last 10. Calgary, in contrast, is still stumbling and one begins to wonder if the goaltending or defense will shape up in time to save the NW Division crown and/or by the time the post-season rolls around.

Notes:

- No line-up changes that I know of this evening.

- Everyone knows to watch Malkin and Crosby, but try to keep an eye on Tyler Kennedy. He's basically the Pens David Moss this year: an underrated guy that gets good results away from the big guns.

- What happens to Jamie Lundmark when Bert returns?

We have some good offense! But…questionable defense.

How’s your PP? Looks like you have an early start with that

Tonight’s your best chance to score a SH goal or two. As you are seeing already.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

You too actually. Last I checked the Pens have given up either eight or nine this season.

What’s Pittsburgh defense like? We hear a lot about the offense out west, of course, and I know Fleury is a decent goaltender. But I don’t even recognize most of the defense, let alone know how well they play.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 4:43 PM PDT reply actions

The defense doesn’t have a bunch of big guys. The top line with Gonchar and Letang is primarily the offensive D-men. Scuderi and Eaton are the big shot blockers. Hal Gill gets in the lane and forces guys out of the crease, while Brooks Orpik is really the only muscle guy on the blue line.

That’s for the Malkin fans I’m sure ;-)

Iginla looked bad against Detroit and he looks terrible thus far tonight. Like his skates need sharpening or something.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:01 PM PDT reply actions

Eesh. That Moss guy in the right place at the right time. Accurate comparison to Tyler Kennedy btw

penguins are easily the better team this far. Flames look abysmal.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:07 PM PDT reply actions

That PP was terrible. Bobbling passes, on our own blueline, on the PP? Get a grip guys.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 5:07 PM PDT reply actions

Awful. Flames go 0-3 and the Pens go 1-1 and that’s the difference in the period.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:17 PM PDT reply actions

Moss had 4 shots on net in the period (and a crossbar).

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:21 PM PDT reply actions

OH!!!!! FUCK THAT WAS CLOSE!!!!

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 5:41 PM PDT reply actions

Can’t believe that didn’t go in.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:42 PM PDT reply actions

That wasn’t a good save by MAF, that was an off-target shot by Glencross. Amazing passing by that third line, however.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 5:42 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, Fleury got lucky.
The third line is the only one generating anything. The first line is a huge clunker right now.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:44 PM PDT reply actions

I can’t believe we’ve blocked 11 shots already. That’s a clear change in strategy. My understanding was that previously the Flames were coached to let Kipper get a clear view on those shots, but maybe the coaching staff has seen the problem with that strategy (namely, Kipper).

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 5:46 PM PDT reply actions

Yup. things have changed since the Blues game.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:51 PM PDT reply actions

Our fourth line is doing well on possession. Unfortunately, they don’t have the skill to really generate any scoring chances.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 5:52 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, they’ve been passable.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 5:54 PM PDT reply actions

To be honest I dont think Calgary is playing very bad at all right now. They arent getting a lot of great scoring chances but I’d say a lot of that is just Pitts playing really well defensively.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 5:59 PM PDT reply actions

on a plus note too iggy is gonna be pissed now. Perhaps he will take this game over?

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:00 PM PDT reply actions

had to run outside for a few minutes… why is Iggy going to be pissed??

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:01 PM PDT reply actions

talbot poked the bear

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:01 PM PDT reply actions

that was a blatant high stick. Its not just crosby whos a whiner its pittsburgh.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:04 PM PDT reply actions

For all the knocks against Vandermeer, at least he knows when to bleed.

And holy crap guys, play a bit of defence on the PP. Please.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 6:04 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, clear high stick.
The PP is awful still.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:05 PM PDT reply actions

man fleury is getting lucky tonight.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:06 PM PDT reply actions

i will never accept he meant to do that. Hes prolly the 5th worth goalie in the nhl right now.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:07 PM PDT reply actions

WOW!!! That shift was ALL iginla!!!

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:08 PM PDT reply actions

lol told u. The sign said dont poke the bear. Talbot didnt listen…

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:09 PM PDT reply actions

Flames PP is still terrible. They gave up, what 2? 3? shorthanded opportunities in that period? That’s just got to stop.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:10 PM PDT reply actions

Phaneuf

Has Dion made a right decision in the past month? My god he looks terrible. Horrible choice after horrible choice.

by Subversive on Mar 25, 2009 6:11 PM PDT reply actions

I dont know. he’s looked terrible to me all month as well. McGuire was talking about how he’s been “improving” recently. I dont see it at all.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:15 PM PDT reply actions

in comparison to where phaneuf was I actually dont mind his play now. I think what happened to him this year is what happens to a lot of young players when they sign a huge contract. They feel they have to carry the world to justify the salary, hell pull out of it next year like Vanek or Nash did. I honestly just think he has been trying to do way too much sometimes, highlight reel stuff. All in all though I have been enjoying his play.

Like im sorry guys that hudler goal that he was “responsible” for. Anyone whos names isnt lidstrom and its the same result.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:15 PM PDT reply actions

Isnt there supposed to be something about the 3rd year being tough and the 4th year being a blossom year for young players?

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:17 PM PDT reply actions

I dont know of any rule of thumb myself.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:17 PM PDT reply actions

i looked it up amongst the best defensemen (ie nidermayer, lidstrom, pronger, stevens, etc.) and found they all did face something similar in year 3 or 4

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:17 PM PDT reply actions

some had worse numbers than others but all were uncharacteristic of the player themselves.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:18 PM PDT reply actions

I think what makes this particularly bad year for Phaneuf is how out of line his results are with the team around him.
Calgary is a + squad in terms of GD but Phaneuf has the worst +/- on the team.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:19 PM PDT reply actions

yeah thats fair. I kinda blame keenan for that one to be honest. Hes really cut back the time of late but for a while there it was rediculous. Ill never forget that one game that went to OT and phaneuf played about 40 minutes and he couldnt even stand.

I also think Regher should be getting top minutes phaneuf should still be the #2

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:21 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t know about Phaneuf’s play next year, or where he is on the 3rd year/4th year development cycle, but he has been downright horrible for at least the past month – let’s not get fooled by highlight reel skills he still shows on occasion, his work in his zone and his defensive body language are horrible, period. A huge disappointment and anchor on the Flames SC hopes.

by maimster on Mar 25, 2009 6:21 PM PDT reply actions

I dont know how much can be laid on Keenan. Phaneuf hasn’t really turned a corner since he’s had his time reduced. And it doesn’t seem to matter who he plays with. Heck, he’s been taking on 3rd and 4th lines more recently.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:22 PM PDT reply actions

so what do u think it is?

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:23 PM PDT reply actions

I think that’s honestly the best thing for him. Phaneuf is an offensive defenseman, and he’s clearly most comfortable when playing aggressively. He’s never going to be able to handle tough competition like Regehr, so give him weaker competition and let him try to score some goals.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 6:24 PM PDT reply actions

Sorry, that’s sexist.

I really think he’s just young and needs to mature. The skills and potential are still all there, but guys can have bad years when you’re this age, and it’s the kind of thing that can last an entire season, unfortunately. I don’t buy that he’s “never going to be able to handle tough competition like Regehr.” This year, however, that’s 100% accurate.

by duncan on Mar 25, 2009 6:25 PM PDT reply actions

Uh, that was supposed to say “Elisha” above “Sorry, that’s sexist.” Somehow the thread deleted it.

by duncan on Mar 25, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Although, it would be funny if ngthagg was sitting there briefly wondering how I took his previous comment as “sexist”

by duncan on Mar 25, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough. Perhaps he will blossom defensively. But we shouldn’t give him shut-down duties before he has demonstrated an ability to play a shut-down role.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah i was gonna responjd similar to duncan. Hes an offensive D man but thats not all hell be. Pure OD are players like Bergeron. I figure hell turn into something more of an all round defensemen like lidstrom or pronger or stevens.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:27 PM PDT reply actions

to be honest im pretty sure while pardy looked good this season, i wouldnt put money on him being too effective next season they are just too young and defense is a learned skill.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

are they gonna let fleury get a shut out?

hand down is that happens this will be by far the lowest point of the season. Worse than getting their asses handed to them by SJS or CHI

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

well that was a good game sarcasm

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

if iggy kicks the fuck out of someone itll make me feel a lot better. Malkin anyone?

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:36 PM PDT reply actions

Calgary’s first line is absolute garbage in this game.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:36 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed Kent, but what a horrible effort early on in the third by this team. Can’t elevate when they have to here.

by duncan on Mar 25, 2009 6:37 PM PDT reply actions

We’ve looked so weak in the third, I have no hope of a recovery. I was expecting them to come out aggresively, but it’s been the opposite.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 6:37 PM PDT reply actions

hte most frusterating thing is fleury is marginally better then roloson. And he is prolly gonna get the SO. I knew they shoulda played Cumac tonight. I was saying that a few days ago. This was a lost cause from the beginning.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, the whole team looked like shit to start the period…but the first line has been bad all game. And they were pretty bad last game too. I dont like that trend.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:40 PM PDT reply actions

Maher is saying Bertuzzi hopes to be back tomorrow night.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

Hey, never count out the Flames.

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

The only thing appalling is the absolute under-the-bus throwing that is going on here…

“That was a good game”

“lost cause from the beginning”

“No Hope of recovery”

…and my favorite…

“lowest point of the season”

There is still 10 minutes left in the game, and I agree, it’s not fun to watch, but you sound like Oiler fans!

…last time I checked, the games not over… But please… feel free to continue to throw the team you love so much under a tire…

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

What the hell are you talking about?

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I just can’t believe Hal Gill scored like that. I never knew he had it in him

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

It’s my right as a fan to throw whoever the hell I want under a bus, or any other type of moving vehicle. They look like shit and they don’t deserve to win, so there.

by Subversive on Mar 25, 2009 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

I think the Pens have been very good tonight. They are way stronger on the puck than I remember.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:44 PM PDT reply actions

the reason i said low point of the season is because Fleury is soooooooooooo bad. I have a special hate for him too.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:44 PM PDT reply actions

VERY strong on the puck… What are turnovers/giveaways looking like statistically…

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:45 PM PDT reply actions

I’m just calling it as I see it. The Flames came into the third down by only a goal, leading in total shots and EV shots. They let in another goal, and they’ve given up the lead in shots.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 6:45 PM PDT reply actions

Fleury is fine, don’t kid yourself…he’s made some nice saves this game

by maimster on Mar 25, 2009 6:46 PM PDT reply actions

Glengary Glencross just can’t buy one.

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 6:46 PM PDT reply actions

their special teams are way to inconsistant. The PK is usually pretty good but man their PP needs some sort of trend game to game

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:46 PM PDT reply actions

Fuck me the front of the net is tight infront of fluery.. not a lot of pucks getting through…

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:47 PM PDT reply actions

That first line is aggravating to watch. They run around in their own end, then when they finally break out, it’s time to change.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

on a plus not I dont think anyone can try and blame Kipper tonight. Hes looked quite solid.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:49 PM PDT reply actions

3-2? Did they just pull up on a 3-2??

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:51 PM PDT reply actions

Flames dont have it tonight. They’ve flubbed a lot of scoring chances and the Penguins are way too hungry and strong.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, they are playing great hockey. Flames “difference makers” are nowhere to be found in contrast.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 6:55 PM PDT reply actions

does Kipper play tomorrow do u think?

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:56 PM PDT reply actions

So this is the first time the Flames have been shutout since the 6-0 loss to the Canucks at the beginning of the season. huh

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 6:56 PM PDT reply actions

Slightly off topic of the game, but was asked this earlier by a friend; curious what you all think….

who’s your Coach of the year candidates?

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:56 PM PDT reply actions

Todd McLellan
Brent Sutter
Claude Julien

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Coach of the year should include SJS’s (I cant remember his name), Julien and Sutter

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they kinda have to play Kipper tomorrow. I dont like it either but they need at least 1 win on this B2B

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 6:57 PM PDT reply actions

Sutter (NJD), Keenan (CGY), Julien (BOS)

by Cubesworth on Mar 25, 2009 6:59 PM PDT reply actions

Matt Cooke hits the post on an open net.

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 6:59 PM PDT reply actions

None of the Pens can hit the open net

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

Cripes. Why did bother to have Kipper in net at all? We’d have been better off with 6 skaters.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

Should have had Kipper on the bench all game…

by Steal Thunder on Mar 25, 2009 7:01 PM PDT reply actions

How can you blame the goalie when his team scores ZERO goals??

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 25, 2009 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

No, we’re not blaming Kipper, we’re making fun of Pittsburgh for missing the net repeatedly.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Sigh . . . go St. Louis, I guess.

by ngthagg on Mar 25, 2009 7:02 PM PDT reply actions

is that who Vancouver plays next? Thats actually not an opponent I would wanna face right now. They can really bring it now.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Yyeah Cumac totally needs to start playing the beginning of B2B’s. You know if they lose the first and they absolutely need to win the second Kipper can take them there. Plus if they win the first thats just a bonus.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:02 PM PDT reply actions

Flames aren’t making me feel good about them lately. Their special teams are an absolute abortion.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:04 PM PDT reply actions

yeah im curious to see how they do in playofffs

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:06 PM PDT reply actions

your all gonna laugh but maybe Bert actually can bring them something good tomorrow (?)

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

Well, Kipper has to be better and they have to figure the special teams stuff out.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

Special teams have been too inconsistent but I actually thought Kipper played very good today.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

He was decent today. I thought he lost his net on the Gill goal, but he really wasn’t at fault overall.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I fear Bert returning, because Keenan’s going to put him with Jokinen and Iginla who are pretty lackluster at ES right now. Bert won’t improve things.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

I doubt Keenan does. In practise he was trying it but he rarely follows through in the game. I bet Cammalleri returns to the top line when that happens and the second line is something like Langkow Lundmark and Bert

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Anything good about this game folks? Moss I guess…

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:10 PM PDT reply actions

They really werent that bad defensively either. they gave up a lot of odd man rushes but they played them all well once they were back there. Kipper too! lol

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

Pittsburgh with an open net? That was pretty entertaining… I only caught the third…

by Steal Thunder on Mar 25, 2009 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

Glencross played pretty good too just didnt have much luck

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

It wasn’t a terrible game, quite frankly. The Flames missed some glorious chances. The main issue for me was the PP – it gave up more chances than it got.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:12 PM PDT reply actions

yeah i figure that open net was kinda a testiment to their defensive play. Them missing the net wasnt not do to what the flames were doing.

Actually the 4th line didnt look too bad either even thought they were playing godard and shit players like that.

I full well expect a victory tomorrow regardless of whos in net now. I just cant imagine them letting themselves lose twice at htis point no matter what it takes.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

I think Keenan needs to re-think the Jokinen/Iginla duo. It doesn’t look effective to me.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

maybe he should resurrect Langkow Iggy and let Jokinen play on the 2nd line with Cammalleri. Thatd be a damn solid 2nd line.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

I thought that was the plan to be honest when they first got him. I was thinking when the team was healthy itd look something like:
Bourque-Langkow-Iggy
Camm-Jokinen-Bert
Glen-Conroy-Moss
Lundmark-Boyd-Nystrom

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:20 PM PDT reply actions

thats the ideal to me. That would be such a well balanced attack they really should be able to dominate anyone

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:21 PM PDT reply actions

I think so too, with the 2nd line facing softer opposition.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:21 PM PDT reply actions

yeah that first line should be very defensively responsible seeing as how 2/3 at times may play on the PK.

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:22 PM PDT reply actions

I wonder the odds of Keenan actually implementing these lines. He may consider it. Theres no doubt Langkow and Iggy work well together

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:26 PM PDT reply actions

I think we’ll see something like that if the initial Bert/Jokinen/Iginla dream line fails.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

Bert and Jokinen did play alright together the few game they did. Maybe it would work out…

by Brent G. on Mar 25, 2009 7:29 PM PDT reply actions

I wouldn’t hold my breath.

by Kent Wilson on Mar 25, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Overall thoughts from tonight – well, there are some pretty good teams in the league, and frankly I’d now put the Penguins in that category. When you play good teams, especially on the road, you can play a decent game and still lose – just like Detroit did on Monday. Yes, that’s my way of saying I thought they were decent tonight, like they were in New Jersey, but lost to a team who played better.

Still the same headaches as all year, of course – inconsistent Iggy, poor Phaneuf, putrid PP, dubious D on occasion. I’m not sure any or all of that will be corrected between now and when their year ends, but they’ve gotten this far and I’ll choose to hope it’ll continue into May this year.

by maimster on Mar 25, 2009 8:12 PM PDT reply actions

I just re-read that, and I guess of reached the stage of mindless-head-in-the-sand fan, living on a prayer. The Flames – nearly every Flames team since the 80’s – sends me off the bends, into the hills, at this time of the year…

by maimster on Mar 25, 2009 8:14 PM PDT reply actions

OOPS…‘guess I’ve reached’…

by maimster on Mar 25, 2009 8:15 PM PDT reply actions

from what kent was saying above, yeah, i agree, the jokinen-iginla duo seems to be a little off right now. brents idea for the lines when everyone is healthy seems awesome, but for the moment something has to be done to spark the two big guns. some sort of combo tomorrow night with lanks-iggy and jokinen-cammalleri would be nice to see, but with the winger depth right now its hard to say who will be playing with who…

does anyone else think putting cammy on the point on power plays is a bit of a bad idea considering how many shorty chances get given up? with phaneuf poundin the pooch like he is right now, maybe keenan should put dion on the second unit with an accountable d-man and move adrian up to the top unit…..
