Blues @ Flames Gamethread
St. Louis Blues at Calgary Flames, Mar 20, 2009 6:00 PM PDT
- Blues in town tonight fresh off a 3-0 loss to the Canucks. The good news is, Calgary will have the benfit of a tired opponent on the second night of a B2B for the second game in a row. The bad news is the Canucks won again and are just 3 points back - again.
- The issue of Pardy v Vandermeer is moot tonight since Roy will be out of the line-up and one of them (probably Vandermeer) will be deployed as a forward on the 4th line. I'll be watching to see if Phaneuf remains a "third pairing" guy this evening as well.
- The Blues are a fairly interesting team. They've been lousy for a few years and have built up a nice stable of youngsters as a result (Oshie, Berglund, Johnson, Perron). This season was probably more about injuries than anything else for this club, however, thanks to long term ailments to Erik Johnson, Paul Kariya and Andy McDonald. And even despite all the hurt and all the kids, St. Louis is actually in the running for the post-season thanks to an impressive last quarter run here.
- Random fact: David Backes is the only 20 goal scorer in the league with 150+ PIM.
- This would probably be a good game to play McElhinney, assuming getting Kipper some rest down the stretch is a goal of Keenan's. The Blues, as mentioned, will be tired, they're a lower tier opponent and are 21st in the league in terms of GF. Of course, we all know that's not going to happen.

It would seem very logical but you have to think he will play in 4 more games. I cant see him not playing in at least one of the B2B games. That is of course unless it is a very important game, but might not be

There could be a possible exception depending on how much we need those last points, but I’m expecting exactly the same thing.

Wow, that was one hell of a dominant PP. That first unit is clicking!

That’s two games in a row we’ve gone over half the game without taking a minor penalty. That HAS to be a record.

Bit of self-destruction in the 3rd there.

Yeah, that was a choke, no question. St. Louis was one of the easier games left on the schedule. And we should have won it.
Vancouver just got much closer tonight.

So I would just like to take a moment to thank Kipper for personally losing htis game for them. Congratulations on almost ensuring your team doesnt win division now. ITs going to be one point back tomorrow night, I cannot imagine Phoenix even coming close to beating htem.
You know I honestly thought the team played a pretty good game tonight. There wasnt a lot to complain about but to watch Kipper ruin the night it was disheartening. I am almost positive they will have to face Chicago now and may not even get home ice. Can they beat them? Edmonton beat them on the second night of a back to back but Habby plays so well against hte Flames. Now im nervous. Iggy and Jokinen did almost everything they could (cammalleri was at fault for the tying goal).
I dont know what would happen if this team, with a sureal amount of talent loses in the first round again. It would be rediculous. Keenan would be fired, Playfair too, Sutter would be close.

i really can’t explain why my team can beat the big names but loses consistantly to the teams below the playoff line…. it’s totally infuriating.

I wouldn’t panic, really. The Flames are still playing decent hockey, they just aren’t getting the goaltending right now. There was a let-up in the third period for sure, but the club still generated more shots and probably chances that the Blues over the course of the game.

Step down off the ledge, Brent… ;-)
Seriously, though, well…crap! I reiterate, at this point I don’t care about the division title, just win a playoff round. They have to beat whomever they play, whether it is Chi or the 6th place team, whomever that is. This year has been too much of an emotional roller coaster, and at this point I don’t care about the rest of the regular season – it’s all about at least one playoff series win. If they get that one win, the sky’s the limit, I truly believe…but man, they’re going to kill me to get that one.
