Flames @ Coyotes Gamethread

Calgary Flames at Phoenix Coyotes, Dec 3, 2009 6:30 PM PST

This is one of those games.

You know the ones. Where all the arrows are pointing in the right direction for a win. Where your hopes for the team are high and everything in the universe seems to be indicating a sure-fire victory. And you lose.

Think about it:

- Bourque returning from injury and on the first line

- Team coming off best win of the year

- Kipper nursing a 2 game shut-out streak

- Iginla coming off a first-star-of-the month performance

- PHX a rag-tag bunch the Flames should be able to beat.

Throw in the fact that I'm paying to watch this contest and the gut-punch loss is all but guaranteed.

Prove me wrong Flames. Prove me wrong.

“It’s like the vendors are selling fire.”

Nice line, Ferraro. Now lets get this Canuck silliness over with.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 6:30 PM PST reply actions

And we get to enjoy the charm and wit of Charlie Simmer.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 6:34 PM PST reply actions

A few of the folks at Lowetide figured Mickey Redmond on the Wings feed was liquored, so if Charlie’s sober, we’re likely ahead of the game. Or it might help, who knows?

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

Three shifts in the offensive zone. Good start.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 6:40 PM PST reply actions

Meh powerplay.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 6:43 PM PST reply actions

But continuing to control it in the offensive zone is good.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

Bleh, that could have gone in in so many ways.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 6:45 PM PST reply actions

Hahaha Conroy’s answer….Bring Jarome to a desert island with him.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 6:49 PM PST reply actions

That answer was even funnier after seeing his wife…not sure what he was thinking. My favorite was Nystrom (I think it was him) who just said “woman”

by maimster on Dec 4, 2009 8:04 AM PST up reply actions

There’s no real nice way to say it, but the PPV features are unbelievably sad.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 6:50 PM PST reply actions

I do want to know why Olli Jokinen was so far over to the left there.

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

After a good initial volley, the Flames looks like they’ve gone to sleep recently.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 6:55 PM PST reply actions

Phoenix has way too much room to skate in our zone.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

Wow. That was lucky.

“Good job by the Flames penalty killers”. Uhhh…watch the game, Rob.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:02 PM PST reply actions

Not sure who the D man was there…got himself way out of position.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:03 PM PST reply actions

Heh, not surprising.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:04 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, that was some pretty shoddy positioning.

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

Kipper looking amazing.

The rest of the team…not so much.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:04 PM PST reply actions

Stacking the pads?? what the? who is that in goal Gump Worsley?

by LawrenceS on Dec 3, 2009 7:05 PM PST reply actions

Nice idea on that play.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:07 PM PST reply actions

What’s happened to Nystrom?

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 7:08 PM PST reply actions

For that matter, what’s happened to Moss? They’re going with a Prust-Nystrom-Moss fourth line now?

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 7:09 PM PST up reply actions

Ah, Nyzerman. Brent must have just been bored there.

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

Talk about timely.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:10 PM PST reply actions

Phaneuf made that whole move by jumping up.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 7:10 PM PST reply actions

I can’t believe that goal. I was about to say that the Flames are lucky to escape this period tied, and then…

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:11 PM PST reply actions

Scoring chances 8-7 in favor of PHX who were well ahead until the final minute of the third.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:12 PM PST reply actions

Majority of the Phoenix chances were around the midpoint of period in a big bunch. After the penalty kill it seemed to be pretty uneventful.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

Great awareness of the time on the clock by everyone. Phaneuf knew he could afford to jump in, Moss knew where he had to be.

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 7:12 PM PST reply actions

Agreed, good stuff all around (and a nice bounce to boot).

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

….Conroy’s wife is hot….

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:14 PM PST reply actions

“it really seems the Flames got their feet moving…”

Stop it Charlie. Just stop it.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:20 PM PST reply actions

Dog Sutter almost seems normal. No bitter beer face, at any rate.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 7:24 PM PST reply actions

Why did they ask Lance Bouma what his favorite band is? Why not his favorite color? Or the air-speed velocity of a Swallow?

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:24 PM PST reply actions

African or European?

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t know…

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

Were you even alive when that movie came out?

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 7:27 PM PST up reply actions

Likewise, the parents learned me my Monty Python, though.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

Didn’t think so. Never stopped me from watching Hitchcock, though, so no different, I suppose.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

what IS lance bouma’s favorite colour ? i MUST know. he’s the heir apparent to tömi mäki.

by walkinvisible on Dec 3, 2009 10:07 PM PST up reply actions

Not quite enough space for Moss to work with that earlier.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:40 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, he brushed against his back as the guy fell.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

Two minutes for being in the area.

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

Dammit, almost Lanks.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:42 PM PST reply actions

Another quick whistle saves the Flames a goal.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:42 PM PST reply actions

Lucky whistle there.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:42 PM PST reply actions

Solid, Kipper, solid.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:43 PM PST reply actions

Well the bad whistle made up for the bad boarding call, I guess.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:45 PM PST reply actions

Well, they could only dodge things for so long.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 7:45 PM PST reply actions

Too bad it had to be a goal like that.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 7:46 PM PST up reply actions

Wow. Seeing-eye shot.

by duncan on Dec 3, 2009 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

Can’t believe how many bullets the Flames have dodged in this game.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 7:56 PM PST reply actions

Chances were 6-6 in that period, although a bulk of the Coyotes came with the man advantage.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:04 PM PST reply actions

Not surprised that Phoenix didn’t get much at EV. The Flames were in the hole re: Corsi in the first, and they’re only -1 after two. Even game, tie score. Seems right to me.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

by walkinvisible on Dec 3, 2009 8:11 PM PST reply actions

hahahahaha i’m at sunshine. i hate my job.

by walkinvisible on Dec 3, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions

at sunshine? what job takes you to sunshine in the middle of the night… do you get to ski in the day?

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:24 PM PST up reply actions

do you ski if you find yourself at a ski resort not for work?

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

not really. snowboard maybe but terribly…. ;) right now drinking beer. what’s the score ?

by walkinvisible on Dec 3, 2009 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

I am solving technical computer problems unrelated to hockey… and my network connection is terrible so streaming is not an option

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

yeah but… what’s the score ??

by walkinvisible on Dec 3, 2009 8:53 PM PST up reply actions

what’s the beer, and who’s paying?

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

um. i can’t believe we lost that game.

by walkinvisible on Dec 3, 2009 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

Tara McCool is terrible

It’s shocking that she has had a job in television for as long as she has.

These broadcasts are so mickey mouse, it’s embarassing. Glad I’m not paying for it.

by Subversive on Dec 3, 2009 8:18 PM PST reply actions

The feed at justin.tv is shockingly good. I’m quite impressed.

by Subversive on Dec 3, 2009 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

Everything is shocking in my world tonight, apparently.

by Subversive on Dec 3, 2009 8:21 PM PST up reply actions

Prucha’s line versus Iginla’s line and the Flames spend the shift in their own end.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:22 PM PST reply actions

Did these guys spend the intermission drinking?

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:26 PM PST reply actions

Maybe ’neuf did

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:26 PM PST up reply actions

Taking pointers from Ron Artest, maybe?

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

They partied with Ron Artest.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

I’M SLOW OK.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Ah, sorry, Colin ;-)

That story made me laugh, and yet at no point was I surprised. Ron-Ron is an odd dude, even by odd-dude standards.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

Hehe, all good. Everything out of his mouth is comedy gold.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 8:32 PM PST up reply actions

Robert beat me.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Geezus I gotta phone Shaw and get my modem upgraded… their latest “network management” upgrades have made my network connection so lossy, it’s horrible…

Bursty traffic with lots of lost packets does not make a smooth video stream…
I guess I just gotta give up on watching online tonight

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:26 PM PST reply actions

no one to blame but myself… I coulda upgraded it like 4 years ago… inertia is the big limiter

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

There’s been one scoring chance in this period.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:33 PM PST reply actions

What a scrambly piece of crap this period has been.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 8:33 PM PST reply actions

Yeah. No Picasso this one.

Next goal wins this game.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:34 PM PST up reply actions

If I was coaching Phoenix, I think a one-shot game would be what I’d want.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 8:36 PM PST up reply actions

WHO THE FUCK IS DOUG MOSS, CHARLIE?

by Subversive on Dec 3, 2009 8:36 PM PST reply actions

President of the Coyotes, actually, but obviously not who he meant.

I hope, anyway.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Couple close calls in the second half of that penalty.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 8:40 PM PST reply actions

Looks like both teams just want overtime.

-Colin

by Colin S on Dec 3, 2009 8:44 PM PST reply actions

Gio got caught on that one. Not the best goal Kipper has allowed recently either.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:47 PM PST reply actions

Well, can’t say Im surprised.

Fairly bland effort by the Flames. Coyotes probably deserved that one, especially considering the fast whistle.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:53 PM PST reply actions

That fast whistle almost evened out the atrocious penalty call on Regehr.

The pussification of hockey continues unabated.

by Resolute on Dec 4, 2009 7:57 AM PST up reply actions

I think if someone turns their back at the last second before being hit into the boards, they should get the penalty. Call it “boarded by stupidity”. Reggie and Moss penalties were both ridiculous.

by maimster on Dec 4, 2009 7:59 AM PST up reply actions

Can’t really say the result was unjust. Phoenix played a pretty tidy third.

by Robert Cleave on Dec 3, 2009 8:53 PM PST reply actions

Chances were 3-2 in favor of PHX in that period BTW.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 3, 2009 8:54 PM PST reply actions

a display of offensive talent and creativity the likes the NHL has rarely seen?

by d_p_h on Dec 3, 2009 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

Boring ass game

That game was kind of boring to be honest.

by tsukemonoki on Dec 3, 2009 10:07 PM PST reply actions

15 minute meltdown, Kipper flubs the quick turn around shot by Prucha, Gio gets pwned by Pyatt!?!?, no goal support and the Nashville game is history long ago. Lame.

I guess this should go in the post game….fAck.

Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V

by LawrenceS on Dec 4, 2009 7:13 AM PST reply actions

Flames always play horrible on PPV. I’m fairly certain it’s because they’re embarrassed about the horrible production quality of the broadcasts.

Rob Kerr’s not a bad PBP guy, though. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get a full time gig with a team at some point.

by Subversive on Dec 4, 2009 7:24 AM PST up reply actions

Chuckled at your comment about Kerr doing PBP… I was saying the same thing to a buddy I know (TV broadcaster) back home. Some bad stories about him though, not a nice fellow. IMO he’d be better on radio, the Bill Gates lookalike thing doesn’t go well on television. Totally agree, the production values on PPV are terrible. adtdhe.net might be poor but at least I don’t have to pay for it ….

by Calgarian in SJ on Dec 5, 2009 12:57 PM PST up reply actions

Saw the game taped and missed Kent’s intro beforehand, but I would have completely agreed with the premise and the game played down to the expectations. I may have been tired from trying to keep up with a bunch of college kids on the ice earlier in the evening, but I kept falling asleep during this game which sums it up very well. Boring!

Although, I will say, after watching the first intermission, I think a blindfolded game of “Guess the Sutter” would be a treat. Good to see Duane sounds like Brent and Daz, right down to the sound bites.

by maimster on Dec 4, 2009 7:58 AM PST reply actions

All good things come to an end but what made me mad was the the Coyotes didn’t even play that great, we had the chances but those damn posts always mess things up and it always sucks when a former Canucklehead scores the GWG.

Get back at it on Saturday against arguably the best the NHL has to offer.

30 years of the NHL's Best Hockey, It got us through some tough times.
