Flames @ Predators Post-Game
Well, that was something. Easily the Flames best 60 minute effort of the season, I'd say aside from a couple of shifts in the second period, the Flames were the best team in this game from start to finish. Most telling is the fact that the Flames held the Preds to just a few ES shots on net and a single scoring chance in the final frame - especially because Calgary has struggled with letting teams back in games while leading this season. That was text-book shut down hockey in the third and it was nice to see the team - finally - execute that sort of strategy.
Oddly, a number of players were under water in terms of corsi this game, but that probably doesn't tell the tale. The Preds were pressing later on, but their efforts were rewarded with a lot of blocked shots and passes. Langkow et al faced Arnott while Jarome faced the checking unit of Smithson, Legwand and Ward most of the evening and, with apologies to Barry Trotz, the set-up couldn't have favored Calgary more - in fact, that's the strategy I hope Sutter will favor going forward, assuming Bourque lands back on Langkow's unit. Jokinen has been playing better, but I think I still prefer him playing against the likes of third liners like Ward and Smithson rather than going Power v. Power.
David Moss had probably his best game of the season as well, scoring the opening goal with a great effort and just generally being solid all over the ice. The Flames are a better team with him playing at his best and, whatever unit he ends up on once Bourque comes back, the puck will start heading the right direction more often if Moss can sustain the gains he's made recently.
Also a positive is the fact that the PP got back on the board again. Things have looked better with the man advantage since that brief period where the players spent a lot of time standing around hoping the puck would pass through the defenders.
Overall, this was undeniably a step int he right direction. A healthy Bourque and more third periods like this and my hopes for more than a play-off berth will start to perk up.
Highlight of the night - Let's go with Moss' GWG

Ok, I am smiling ear to ear over last night’s game. Seriously, what a string of good hockey can do for the worries. It was an incredible game, and I think it may have been the most complete game by the Flames in recent (or longer) memory.
Tally it up:
Shutout, 2 PP goals, Goal by a defender, 5 different scorers, 3 pts 1st line, 2 pts 2nd line, 3 pts utility forward, Outshot opponent 30-22, 4-4 PK, hell….we even won the fight.
Awesome…. and Dawesome.
This considering we had Sarich and Bourque, two top line players out with injuries really illustrates the depth we have as well. It is quite impressive actaully, that with some of the Lundmark bashing I was doing on his earlier flops, that we can pull a guy up from the AHL and he can play effectively, during sheltered times, on the top line.
I’m starting to look at this team as very nearly a complete team after these efforts. If we get a chance to see Bourque with a finally arrived Jokinen and Iggy and it works….do we need a better LW? I’m loving the Dawes-Lanks-Moss line and I think we should keep it. I’m loving that Boyd can float around and be effective anywhere. At this point, I’m even OK with McGratton being in and out of the line-up, as long as it’s out more than in.
We have tremendous depth on “D” and really would only seriously fear an injury to Kipper as a major disaster.
Speaking of the MAN:
Last games: 1.000% ev sv%, Highlight reel: 1-6
Game stats Kipper: 15-5-3 – .925%* (.942% ev)
.920 sv% +: 14 of 22
sv% >/= opp. sv%: 17 of 22
<27 s/a: 5 of 22
>30 s/a: 9 of 22
>33 s/a: 7 of 22
Highlight reel: 87 – 63
*Just a side note…it has taken Kipper exactly 5 games, 5GA and two shutouts to return his sv% to .925 (within .001 of the .926 he had) since the Flames pulled the cry-baby game and lost 7-1 to the Hawks.
and finally PS…
Can Ballard be suspended for swinging his stick baseball style and injuring his own goalie? You know if it was the other team’s goalie he would be…I say…send a message, it’s stupid, dangerous and childish to see defenders smashing their sticks on the net. 2 games. Call me a fanatical dictator if you will.
I don’t know what would be the right course of action with Ballard. I mean, that was mind-bendingly stupid but it wasn’t malicious and I doubt it’ll ever happen again. Maybe leave it to be dealt with by the team?
Yeah, I think internal punishment would be the proper course of action. 1 game in the press box and a locker room apolagy to Vokoun personally and the team as a whole.
You guys are probably right. I think it’s just one of those “this could have been avoidable” things. Maybe it’s because I have a huge beef with seeing players smash their sticks in the first place, that I am jumping all over this example, hoping for immediate action. Especially when young kids emulate it, at the levels I see more frequently. I’ve long held the opinion, that it is worthy of an unsportsmanlike conduct 2 minute penalty. I would always ask: What happens if he hits someone in the eye? or the stick breaks and hits someone in the face?
It’s a stretch, but it’s like the old mothers adage “Don’t run with scissors” You know some kid fell, and made that rule stick.
Perhaps a suspension is extreme, but I think lasting change sometimes comes from extreme initiatives. Suspend him one game to get the league’s attention…and change the rule to a 2min. penalty for ‘stick-swinging’. It may not stop it forever, but it will hopefully reduce the frequency.
Fleury used to piss me off and embarrass himself when he did all that stick smashing shit and I bleed my fanaticism for Theo, so there wasn’t much bias.
here I go adding more on…
I guess another way to look at it is this:
I think the league can/should take opportunities to create a culture of a zero-tolerance approach to careless use of the stick. Expecting players to assess when it’s ok to swing a stick when angry, and when its not, -when speed/emotions are high - is too much to ask of these guys quite frankly. I think it’s an all-or-nothing approach. Swinging the stick is banned when associated with anger, vs ok when attempting to shoot/hit the puck. I think the mindset is clearly different enough that there would be no confusion on ice by either officials or players.
Bo Jackson (remember him?) used to snap bats over his knee…. could you imagine if he started whipping them through the air towards the dugout cause he was upset?
Perspective

haven’t loggedon here in a while but………Not really sure why the general tone of KW posts remains so negative. I know you are a ‘half empty’ show me kind of guy and that you take pride in being so, but its just misplaced now. The basic phenomenon we are witnessing is a team that looks like it is starting to gel and become a formidable opponent. I would suggest that the trajectory has been consistently upward for a few weeks now (Chi game being an anomaly). What you should be “hoping” for is a #1 or #2 seed in the west. And yes, I realize Chicago and SJ anre both very good teams.
PS – does anyone really care about corsi stats? – seems to me it rarely squares logically with the outcome of the game. Outcome being all that is important of course. Jay B. being a -12 last night is all the proof you really need.

Well, Bonesman, I’m not going to accuse you on not paying attention the last few years, but…the Flames have pulled this type of nice early-to-mid-season run for the last several seasons. They had a team best win streak under Playfair in November. They did something similar the next year under Keenan in December, including a 6-for-6 road trip. They were probably one of the best teams in the league from Dec-Feb in 08/09, a period in which I think they lost something like 5 games in regulation. Each year, all of it has collapsed in a heap come April.
Calgary’s had a real nice start to the season, but it’s going to take more than November of Iginla lighting it up and Kipper standing on his head to get me to start declaring the Flames a legitimately elite team. Because I’ve seen this act before. Nashville was the first game in a few weeks where I felt the team legitimately dominated the opponent and the result was never really in doubt.
As for corsi, it’s mostly a broad strokes stat the tends to be more meaningful over large samples rather than single games. It’s shown to be repeatable and therefore representative of a team’s strength over the long-run and it tends to correlate well with scoring chance differential at the individual player level. What it doesn’t necessarily do is tell you how good a player is after game “a” or “b”, especially for a guy like Bouwmeester who spends all his time take defensive zone face-offs against really good players – in that case, it just tells whether that player time in the offensive or defensive zone during the contest in question.
It’s a point of interest for some, but feel free to ignore it.
I agree - Sort of
No doubt you have a good memory and always do your homework and I agree that the playoffs are the only real benchmark – but I think the 09-10 version is not just hot and cold but trending the right way. For $7 million per annum Kipper should steal a game here and there – but that hasn’t happened much in the last two years because the defence in front of him had no composure and seemed to give up boatloads of good chances and rebounds. Big improvement there you would have to agree and, given the personnel, room for further improvement. Since I don’t devote that much time to stats, I have to just stick with the basics and (as of today) the Flames are 4th in GAA and 4th in GFA. I just think it looks like a better package than I have seen in years. Less volatile and able to win most games by scoring 3 goals. With Keenan and Playfair teams it wasa bit of a box of chocolates from night to night. To put it simply, I see a team identity emerging. I suppose the Sutters are starting to deliver on that promise. Don’t get me wrong, it is a long year so silly to get too excited
Correction
6th in GFA and 6th in GAA – was quoting that Boomer guy from the radio in the note above – but just checked nhl.com
