Game 4: Battle of Alberta (Flames @ Edmonton) Post-Game

Tonight, Calgary had a chance to extend their start-of-season winning streak to four, something that I don't think has ever happened in the lifetime of my allegiance to the Flaming C. Even sweeter, they could do it against the hated Oil, and maintain a 6-point lead over the equally hated Canucks. What transpired tonight was something to behold, and in the end it came down to multiple photo (video?) finishes.

NHL.com recap
(look under "Game Reports" for useful info like Faceoffs, TOI and Play-by-Play)

First period:
EV shots: 8-7 Calgary
EV Corsi: +1 Calgary

How did the Flames look:
They spent a lot more time in the opposition zone than their own zone. A LOT more. Lord, I hope to be saying this frequently this season. The pace was fairly muted to me but the Flames' hard work paid off with Moreau taking an interference penalty late in the period. Lots of puck movement and shots at the net on the ensuing PP, although I thought there was a bit of a one-dimensional "pass to Phaneuf, shoot, repeat" feel to the PP. It fell apart after the PP though, as Phaneuf's horribly timed change led to Moreau skating out of the penalty box and putting a beauty wrister past Kipper. The fourth line proceeded to shit the bed, an a late Oilers PP put the hosts up 2-0. Bummer.

Notables:
Jokinen is really struggling. It's hard to really put into words how ineffective he is, so all I will say is this: he loses possession of the puck like it's going out of style.

Bouwmeester is essentially given a minor penalty for the skating ineptitude of JF Jacques. Which is ironic given how relaxed the referees were calling the game prior to this.

Second period:
EV shots: 4-2 Calgary
EV Corsi: +2 Calgary

How did the Flames look:
I will say, tentatively, that they played ok. Certainly not as dominant at EV as the first period. But ok! They had a really nice PK, a really nice PP (especially at 5-on-3) and the first line actually quietly (so quietly we couldn't see it, but it happened!) put together a decent period of driving possession. Hard work pays off in this period as the Flames score a very late goal.

Notables:
Early in the period, Iginla takes down Souray and both crash head-first into the boards. I can't say I'm impressed. Initially I thought it wasn't a trip (as the referee at centre ice deemed) but upon reflection I think it could have been. In any case Iginla did in some way knock Souray off-balance. Obviously it wasn't intentional (I don't think I have to explain why) but doing that at high velocity is stupid. Souray ended up with a mild concussion and Moreau ended up with a bruised ego after getting rag-dolled by Iginla in the ensuing fight. Oilers fans are crying for suspension but I don't think it's going to come (and I'm not sure it's warranted anyway).

Third period:
EV shots: 8-8
EV Corsi: even

How did the Flames look:
This period (and my recollection of it) are kind of disjointed as the score kept changing. I thought the Flames created some nice chances early and it paid off with a bit of a flukey tying goal (or that's at least how I remember it) that I initially thought would be credited to Kronwall. After the goal we spend a number of shifts in our zone (SIGH). Nothing comes of it, but the Oilers would capitalize on a failed breakout and go up by one with six minutes to go. That seemed to put the stopper to the Flames comeback but a breakout by Horcoff and Hemsky with the Flames net empty was thwarted, the Flames regain possession and a Bouwmeester point shot is redirected into the open and willing Oilers net with less than two seconds left. A nailbiter finish to be sure!

Notables:
The tying goal in the dying seconds was and is continuing to be disputed as it is unclear whether Bourque's stick was above the crossbar when he tipped it in. Obviously the dividing line on this debate features Flames fans on the one side and Oilers fans on the other side. Go figure!

Overtime:
EV shots: 2-0 Edmonton
EV Corsi +4 Edmonton

How did the Flames look:
A travesty of a period. A weak, weak tripping call is called on Giordano and the Oilers proceed to enjoy two minutes of 4-on-3 PP. This should all but guarantee victory for the home team (4-on-3 shooting and goal rates are through the roof) but thankfully for us the Oilers special teams are fairly inept. Kiprusoff makes a number of highly improbable glove saves - I say highly improbable as the shots seemed to be directed with sure certainty towards a pad or his chest, and yet ended up in his glove.

Notables:
Nothing really, except for an Iggy-of-old drive to the net that almost worked and would have saved us from dealing with the horrible penalty to Giordano.

Shootout:
Calgary:
Dawes - goal
Jokinen - goal
Iginla - did not shoot

Edmonton:
Gagner - miss
O'Sullivan - goal
Hemsky - miss

A controversial shootout. Dawes and O'Sullivan both score on glorious wristers, but the highlight was Jokinen's goal. After a deke on Khabibulin fails to move the goaltender in the opposite direction, Jokinen stuffs the puck against the post. Replays show the puck possibly hitting the outside of the net or outside of the post (hard to tell which) before bouncing off Khabibulin's pad and in. The shootout rules are very clear on rebound goals (not allowed) except in one specific case: when it goes off the post and then off the goalie's pad. In any case, the Flames win, 4-0-0 bitches!

Overall:
EV shots: 20-19 Calgary
EV Corsi: +1 Edmonton

How did the Flames look:
I thought the Flames played well this game. It was probably their most complete game, I hate to use that "60 minute game" cliche but here it is. They still have lots of shit to work on but honestly these are the Flames I want to watch every game, win or lose. Because if they keep getting the puck out of their zone and into the enemy's zone like they did this game, they're going to win. A lot. If there's anything I've learned in the last year about hockey, it is that possession is everything.

Notables:
Can't get that damn goals against per game under 3!

I thought Jokinen looked pretty good tonight. Not amazing but his best game this year by far. He was skating well and made some nice passes to Iggy. Boyd was horrific tonight. I would be tempted to sit him and see what Jaffray can do tomorrow night on the third. At the same time though, you don’t typically change a line up that has won four straight games.

by J.Bender on Oct 8, 2009 11:57 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t think that Boyd looked “bad” perse (Except that one time he was easily shoved off the puck) but he’s not burying his chances. That and he lost his helmat again… tighten your effing chinstraps kid, do you want a concussion or something?

A lot of thoughts have already been hashed over here about the numerous areas of concern for the Flames; KW does his homework and his observations are spot-on. The Flames are 4-0, but if you look back at the analysis of each game … they could easily be 0-4. I don’t want to be the jackass that gets on here and takes away from a great start – how crucial is it for any team to jump out of the gates this quickly and build momentum – especially when the “#1” line is ineffective at EV??? I am still wondering how long it will be before Sutter substitutes Jokinen with Langkow. Win-Win for everyone, no? I guess there is no urgency as long as they keep winning. The hockey gods are smiling on Calgary.

But they can be fickle.

I guess the good news is the Flames are picking up points when they are technically “struggling”. I think the team could be a whole lot better, which is a nice thing to say when you’re 4 and 0.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 9, 2009 5:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Not a win-win for everyone

It would likely be a win for Iginla/Moss, but a loss for Dawes and Bourque, who are finding their way with Langkow right now.

Totally agreed on Jokinen’s struggles, but I wonder if a Moss-for-Glencross swap on lines might be worth trying instead. Glencross wreaks a little more havoc than Moss, and might open up room for Jokey and Iggy. Wouldn’t go there for at least another few games, though. Way too early to start declaring total failures.

Was just watching over the highlights again…what a sick setup by Gio on Lankow’s goal.

Missed this one

happy to hear the won. After perusing the gamethread, it appears that things were better, but are still not the greatest.

The thing with this game and the reason I am optimistic is this: at no point in the game did I think that we were getting outplayed, nor did I think we were just holding on. The Oilers managed to put some offensive pressure on but I thought it was concentrated in a few shifts.

There is still lots to work on (e.g. first line needs to work on covering assignments in the Dzone) but in each of the first three games I felt we didn’t earn the win. Tonight I thought we earned it, and I say this having accepted the loss with 30 seconds to go (so the 2 points are just gravy).

by R O on Oct 9, 2009 5:54 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

Agreed. Frankly, if not for Khabibulin, this game is over after 30 minutes. I’m rather surprised Oiler fans are throwing him under the bus for giving up three deflected goals given how he played last night. Especially the save on Langkow, and his performance in that 5 on 3.

Loved listening to Quinn whine about the Souray-Iginla hit. Iggy was trying to go for the puck, and missed, badly. It sucked, but it was only tripping, and we all hope Souray will be ok very soon. But I did find it beyond ironic that that Pat Quinn was whining about a lack of class when he is publicly calling for someone to club Iginla over the head for that. Meanwhile, Iginla was on his knees, clearly concerned, and giving Souray encouragement as they tended to him, then refrained from pummeling Moreau when the latter fell during their fight. Got news for you Patty-boy, if you want to see what “dirt” looks like, you need only to take a look in the mirror.

Seriously,

I was reading some of the post at hockeyfights, some says Iggy was classless? It wasn’t a pretty hit on Souray, yes, but I am sure he didn’t want it to turn out this way. Then fight with Moreau, damn, he wait and wait until he gets up before throwing any punches, if that’s not class, I do not know what it is, then they b!tch about punches after the linesman steps in? The way I see it, Iggy waited until he gets up then start throwing punches while the linesman steps in, if he is so ‘classless’, he would have punch the sh!t out of him while he was down. Seriously…

by Outz on Oct 9, 2009 8:38 AM PDT reply actions

Iginla has built a reputation of class so it’s not really an issue in my mind.

The problem was the play (entangling his stick in Souray’s feet while approaching the boards with speed) was stupid and dangerous and Iginla is smart enough not to do that.

by R O on Oct 9, 2009 9:05 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Another undeserved win for the flames, and another night of ineffectiveness by the top line.

Either they have to get it going, or we promote Prust and his fellow ‘Stroms to the first unit, because they’re the best players on the ice overall thus far.

As far as Iggy’s class goes, there could be none classier. I never understood the need to read the useless crap that oilers fans post, and bringing it over here is just as bad as posting it.

by jessnbrown on Oct 9, 2009 9:01 AM PDT reply actions

That’s a bunch of undue criticism IMO.

Prustrom weren’t the best line out last night (That was Dawes-Lanks-Bork in my eyes). The top line showed signs of life, regulation shots on net were down, no big minus players (only Regehr ended with a negative +/- IIRC). That’s reason to be smiling as far as I’m concerned.

My only annoyance with the game last night was that the shots were kept down and 3 still got past Kipper (not liking this 3.00GGA so far). Frankly, were we to have lost that game I’d have called it an undeserved loss

by Parallex on Oct 9, 2009 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

“My only annoyance with the game last night was that the shots were kept down and 3 times there were awful bone-head defensive breakdowns, twice by Phaneuf, which basically left Kipper to the wolves. (not liking this 3.00 breakdowns/game average so far).”

“What I did like to see was Kipper making so many smart glove saves in overtime, even when they were low at the pads, or in the chest area, which completely negated rebound chances and probably was the difference between winning and losing in OT on the penalty kill”

Fixed.

by LawrenceS on Oct 9, 2009 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions

No, I think I had it right the first time. Ultimately the netminder bears the most responsibility for keeping the puck out of the net. Kipper’s great in clutch pressure situations (dudes got ice water in his veins) but that doesn’t entitle him to a free pass.

But I wasn’t really referring to him earlier since I consider GAA more of a team stat anyways (for individual Goalie stats I like sv% more as a barometer).

by Parallex on Oct 9, 2009 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions

I guess I was just thrown by this “the shots were kept down and 3 still got past Kipper.” It seemed to be pointing to Kiprusoff as opposed to the team.

“Ultimately the netminder bears the most responsibility for keeping the puck out of the net.” I totally agree with this, but that also means that when he makes the saves credit should be given if it’s earned.

I’ve never looked to give Kipper a free pass, but there is a culture present of burying the guy, and that’s as undeserved as being overly-sympathetic.

by LawrenceS on Oct 9, 2009 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

The top line finished in the black on the shot totals. Here are corsi numbers from last night:

Iginla +6
Jokinen +3
Moss +8

Prust -6
Sjostrom -6
Nystrom -7

So I think it’s fair to say that the top line was doing something right last night, and the 4th line was the weakest line.

That said, the first line still needs to find some better chemistry and needs to stop flipping passes crossrink to waiting defenders.

by Jeshko on Oct 9, 2009 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

so gio gets a shit-ton of penalties, most are unwarrented (some are downright imaginary)…. i’d like to do the maths on how often the opposition scores while gio’s in the box, cause i imagine it to be a VERY low percentage. last night when he got 2mins during OT i was HUGELY confident the flames would kill it…. is that weird ?

by walkinvisible on Oct 9, 2009 9:02 AM PDT reply actions

4 on 3, i was at the edge of my seat the whole time…. Other then the OT penality was unfortunate, Gio was just awesome.

So we think CuMac is going to play tonight?

by Subversive on Oct 9, 2009 9:46 AM PDT reply actions

i hope not…but i’d rather have it happen sooner than later…sutter needs to get it that the guy sucks and find us a legit backup or just start exposing Leland to the NHL.

I guess what Im saying is that McBackup will show ability when he plays. And I’d rather have losses with Irving than McBackup, cause at least those losses will amount to something in the way of grooming a solid goalie prospect.

by KingJafi on Oct 9, 2009 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see how we can truly know if McBackup sucks or not. He got thrown into terrible situations all year last year, and the team played awful in front of him in nearly every case. I want to see what he can actually do before I pass judgement.

by Subversive on Oct 9, 2009 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

I still personally would have liked him to play last night, but I’m hoping we see him tonight. The problem is, I don’t wanna be saying after the fact “Well, McL spells the end of the winning streak” I think he’ll do alright, but Dallas will be hungry after two losses, and starting the first game at home, on a four game win streak, second of a b2b will be balls for the kid, but what do I know?

by LawrenceS on Oct 9, 2009 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for these great post game writeups – love the breakdowns by period and with Corsi numbers. I missed the game last night (except the shootout), so this was good to see.
