Battle of Alberta 2.0 Gamethread

Calgary Flames at Edmonton Oilers, Oct 8, 2009 6:30 PM PDT

I don't often make predictions about game results, but if prodded about tonight I'd go with a Flames loss: there's been way too much go the Flames way in absence of actual performance for me to expect Calgary to win 4 in a row. If some certain highly paid players don't suddenly and inexplicably reverse what we've seen out of them so far, the club is bound to start seeing the bad side of scores. The 4th line and PP can only sustain things for so long.

Asked about the Oilers today, Derek replied:

Thus far, the Edmonton Oilers have a Jekyll & Hyde look, depending on the personnel on the ice.  The J.F. Jacques experiment has not been a success, though Ryan Stone looks like he may be a bottom four-type forward for awhile. Steve Staios has looked very unsteady and as long as Renney continues to use he and Souray as the top pairing, Khabibulin is going to see some work. Dustin Penner has been the best Oiler thus far and Sam Gagner is beginning to look like a real NHL player. Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff continue to slump and one wonders how long Jacques will remain in Pat Quinn's good graces. The mood in Edmonton is improving, if only because Quinn's firewagon hockey brings excitement to the building every night.

I fully expect another Flames line to step forward tonight. I don't think it'll Jarome et al - they're too far away from effectiveness to start kicking ass - but it's probably about time for Langkow, Bourque and Dawes to have a good evening. Especially because, as pointed out in the pre-game, the match-ups should favor them over their counter-parts.

Let the comments flow...

Go Flames

At least I get to watch this one on a TV :)

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

Not typically, as I’ve got cable at home, but I was away on business, and hotel TV coverage in US doesn’t seem to ever any hockey at all, much less Flames games.

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d be satisfied with Iginla if he got good at one-way hockey again.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:33 PM PDT reply actions

Have to listen to these dilholes eh. Fack

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 6:34 PM PDT reply actions

Man, this ATDHE is no good if the person streaming the game is changing the freaking channels! argh.

by LawrenceS on Oct 8, 2009 6:34 PM PDT reply actions

Do you have a Shaw Box, Lawrence? There’s a free preview of Centre Ice going on right now – check online for channels.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I actually am a no TV type. If I had one I would watch it all the time. I can’t say no to hockey though…and I live in Vancouver.

by LawrenceS on Oct 8, 2009 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s ok! Because there’s also a free preview of GameCenter on NHL.com going on right now, and I bet you anything their feed is better than ATDHE.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait… wait… wait here, are you telling me that you don’t own a tv because if you did, you’d watch it nonstop? So you like purposely punish yourself? So… you own a computer… are you on that all of the time?

jus jks

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s crazy I know. I’m not seeing a free preview of game cantre on NHL.com. Weird. I remember that last year.

by LawrenceS on Oct 8, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ve searched the site and I guess it was just a 1-day preview last Saturday (with the 15 game schedule). Balls.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Gene Principe’s opening “Flame and Oil” thing… words escape me.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

Hey Kent, nice work today on CBC, I lofted a few softballs in there for you to hit out of the park. Hopefully that stuff leads to more opportunities for ya.

by LawrenceS on Oct 8, 2009 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

Ahhh, No McL…. shows what I know.

by LawrenceS on Oct 8, 2009 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

hopefully a sign of things to come

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m imagining you saying that like the Count from Sesame Street.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

3 on 2 for the Oil, guess which Flames are on the Ice!

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

haha, I know, I know. Three guys deep as the Oil break out.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Jokinen’s job to get back as the high forward too. He’s some first line centre.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions

i wasn’t watching. was it the “top line” plus regehr+phaneuf ?

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but they’ve been better this game actually.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

This 3rd line has been pretty consistently solid so far this year actually.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:45 PM PDT reply actions

Oil hooking goes uncalled.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:47 PM PDT reply actions

reffing the other night was pretty loose as well.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

More like non-existent

by canadiancolts on Oct 8, 2009 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

That backhand pass is not Moss’ game. What the hell is it with top line these days? Completely sucking the essence from our players’ games.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:51 PM PDT reply actions

haha…that was my exact thought. Moss usually takes that puck down low and works the cycle.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I used the word vortex last game. It does have that feel.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Gotta swap him with Bourque, no?

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

It isn’t the third wheel that is causing the problem.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Why not? Are they not both playing their off wings? While they’re at it, swap Jokinen with Langkow… or Boyd. Not liking these lines a lot.

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

What a play by Glencross to keep that puck alive for the Flames.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

The first unit hasn’t looked terrible so far, so that’s good.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

They’ve been ok but they’re doing too much stick work. Iginla and Moss are best battling along the boards and then driving to the net.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, nothing much going on, but at least the Flames aren’t giving them anything.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 6:57 PM PDT reply actions

powerplay

nice, oilers manage to turn their first sustained zone pressure into a powerplay for the flames

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

I haven’t checked but I bet they are going ballistic at Lowetide at that Moreau penalty.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

hahaha. On Moreau and not the refs I assume you mean.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

They’re lippin him over at OilersNation

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Ethan Moreau really is good for a stupid penalty more often than not. That isn’t just an Oilgoisphere construct. But yeah, R O, they likely are.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 7:01 PM PDT reply actions

Let’s make it 1 for 1, set Phaneuf up on the point and have Iggy redirect that!

by flamesfan on Oct 8, 2009 7:01 PM PDT reply actions

Wow who’s brainfart was that?

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:04 PM PDT reply actions

That was disgraceful. Terrible change.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 7:04 PM PDT reply actions

shouldn’t have played the entire power play

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:05 PM PDT reply actions

Nope. And he shouldn’t have glided to the box just then either.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Well Kipper had no chance really. Moreau played that perfectly.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:06 PM PDT reply actions

no doubt, hopefully they regroup quickly here and don’t let another in before the period ends

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Partiallly. Refs did miss a stick hold about 2/3 through that sequence which made it hard for Pardy to follow the puck.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

But yeah the first 2/3 of that shift was horrible.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

First terrible shift by the 4th line this year.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

undressed conroy there

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

not sure why conroy went to the boards there, giving him all that open ice

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

1 goal and they run around like chickens with their head cut off, and maybe the ref should notice that kipper is getting bumped a bit

by flamesfan on Oct 8, 2009 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

I think your prediction looks pretty safe, Kent. They look a bit fragile tonight.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 7:10 PM PDT reply actions

Bound to happen. Puck can’t skip right all the time.

Flames sure like to get scored on at the end of periods.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Last minute goals…!

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 7:10 PM PDT reply actions

That was not a good period.

by LawrenceS on Oct 8, 2009 7:10 PM PDT reply actions

I thought it was pretty stong aside from the last 5 minutes.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Very true, but you can lose a game in 5 minutes

by LawrenceS on Oct 8, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

flames were carrying possession until the breakaway goal

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok I haven’t checked TimeOnIce but will momentarily… I bet the Flames came out on top. It was a great period with a few brain farts.

At this time of year I prefer that to getting dominated but coming out with a lead.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:12 PM PDT reply actions

Very slight advantage to Calgary.

EV shots: 8-7 Calgary
EV Corsi: +1 Calgary

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:13 PM PDT reply actions

And I bet you most of that was recouped in the shift from hell.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow, that period went south in a hurry. I’d say the first 17 minutes were the best almost-period the Flames have played this year. Then a brain fart change by Phaneuf and a stupid play by Conroy on the PK (“I know! I’ll force him to the center!”), and all of a sudden it’s a big hole to dig out of.

by Subversive on Oct 8, 2009 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

Anyone else notice Gio and Bouwmeester spending a ton of time in the Dzone?
I did, and the numbers say:
- JBo: -1 Corsi
- Giordano: -4 Corsi

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:15 PM PDT reply actions

I gotta figure Regehr is either still injured or he was slow in recovering, and isn’t fit enough/strong enough.

It’s not just that he’s slow and standing around a little. But he’s getting pushed around, and pushed down by guys who he wouldn’t’ve noticed last year. There were a couple plays on the far boards where he was just getting pushed around.

I hope it is a short term thing.

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 7:17 PM PDT reply actions

I shoulda looked a little closer at what he was eating in July when I ran into him at the Dairy Lane on 19th…

Too many dairy lane burgers maybe :)

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

He may still be getting the knee up to speed I guess.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Gotta wonder what’s going through the refs head when they let all sorts of stuff go all period and then call that…thing on Bouwmeester.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah that was awful. The guy looked like he slipped on his skates. Meanwhile obvious (to me) stick holds are being let go.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

http://lowetide.blogspot.com/2009/10/flames-at-oilers-g3-09-10.html

The Oilers fans also think they are getting outplayed in their own zone.

This is the first time we’ve had a significant deficit. I expect lots of zone pressure going forward, hopefully to the end of the game this time.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:20 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah. I was really happy with the game up until the break away goal which is encouraging despite the results. Hopefully that continues.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I gotta admit, that was a nice goal by Visnovsky. Really smooth maneuver, something you’d expect from Lidstrom or something.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:23 PM PDT reply actions

Or Giordano ;)

Yeah, it was a good play. Not sure why Conroy stepped out of the way, but it was great execution.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions

ouch, iginla’s knee follows through as he falls into souray

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

Good to see Jarome in the black, albeit for a period.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

what’s fenwick +/-?

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

same as coris, except with blocked shots factored out.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Goddamn what a gross looking hit.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:29 PM PDT reply actions

My gawd, bad call!

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 7:30 PM PDT reply actions

Questionable from the side but it did look like a trip from behind.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Not so bad, stick in the feet, and Souray was a bit vulnerable.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Nooooo Iginla that’s not a smart pass.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:33 PM PDT reply actions

I liked Jokinen going out of his way to smack someone behind the net

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 7:34 PM PDT reply actions

that was a nice shot block by nystrom

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 7:36 PM PDT reply actions

Moreau’s kind of a douchebag.

Flames maintaining nice pressure this period. Oilers are collapsing onto the net.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:38 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah. Flames aren’t really getting much in the way of chances though.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions

unfortunately, i don’t think moreau landed a hit to get iginla really motivated, he’s probably more frustrated at how little he got vent in that fight

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:38 PM PDT reply actions

Was that Phaneuf with an intercepted pass up the middle? Yuck yuck yuck.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:41 PM PDT reply actions

There’s the fight I was asking for! Too bad he didn’t get to pound him.

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 7:41 PM PDT reply actions

nice move by boyd on the blueline and then a nice back pass to glencross

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

golden opportunity here to close the gap

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

Shhh…don’t let the best 5on3 in the NHL hear you say that.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

fairly certain nobody on the bench is reading this on their cellphone :)

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

F me… Dawes was supposed to be IGGY!

by RossCreek on Oct 8, 2009 7:45 PM PDT reply actions

nice pass to dawes, better save by khabibulin

by Jeshko on Oct 8, 2009 7:45 PM PDT reply actions

Nice PP, they had the chances. Can’t sustain 70% forever!

I’d like to see a replay of that penalty.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:48 PM PDT reply actions

Very nice kill.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:52 PM PDT reply actions

Good cycle going, established offensive zone presence…destroyed by a prayer of a pass that had no chance of working.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

So, has anyone else noticed that the book on iggy the last couple years is basically, box him in on half boards, let him skate around, and dare him to make a pass?

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:00 PM PDT reply actions

just stand him in front of the net and absorb punishment…

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

this is the second time today i’ve heard this comment….

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

1 minute left, maybe we can make it out only down 2

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:02 PM PDT reply actions

Christ Boyd has been fighting it when it comes to shooting the puck since the start of the year.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:03 PM PDT reply actions

If he gets the chances, Kent, it’ll do. It’s when a guy doesn’t that you worry.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh yeah, for sure. I’d just like to see him rewarded at some point.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Prescient Kent… dunno if dawes touched it… but.

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:03 PM PDT reply actions

Finally the 2nd line scores. And that’s why I like Giordano…

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:04 PM PDT reply actions

hmph. i wonder why I like giordano ??!? ;)

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

It was inevitable. You can’t spend so much time in the offensive zone and not have something happen.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 8:04 PM PDT reply actions

Cumulative shots up to 2nd period:

EV shots: 12-9 Calgary
EV Corsi: +3 Calgary

Slowly but surely.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 8:05 PM PDT reply actions

The first line is a fair way in the black as well.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup, which is nice to see. Jokinen is still annoying me, but it’s more nit-picking than anything.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions

So, question for discussion… it seems that when iggy and Jokinen are on the ice together, they are just not on the same page, not moving the same way.

One throws a bad pass in the direction of the other, or try’s to stick handle around too many people while the other guy goes where he isn’t a support or outlet.

Is it Iggy not moving to space and Jokinen trying to get him the puck because he was brought here to feed and clothe iggy?

Is it Jokinen not putting the puck where it needs to go?

Is it Jokinen not playing hard nosed enough?

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t really know. I’ve never liked Jokinen’s passing or vision, but it also looks like both guys are trying to force plays. Kinda like a kid who trades for his favorite player in a video game, puts him on a line with his other favorite player, and then spends the entire next game trying to get both of them a goal every shift.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

i would suggest that there’s been a series of guys who have trouble playing with iggy because of the pressure to have the captain perform: tanguay is a good example here….. too much time looking to pass and not enough time making the smart hockey play.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions

WI: I agree about the problems with Iggy, but Jokinen has been particularly inept…

When you break them up, they both play substantially better on other lines. So, why is that combination so BAD

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

hey, don’t get me wrong. i hated the jokinen trade at the start, and i’m still not a fan.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Nope. The season before Keenan decided to hate him.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions

i don’t know if i agree… there was still a whole lotta passing when there should’ve been some shooting.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

(on the other hand, have i mentioned that i really like that giordano guy ??)
:)

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions

btw WI,

thanks for the invite over here for the in game discussions…

I gotta pay attention to when my old friend Duncan is doing his in game commentary at HTP so I give him my peanut gallery contributions.

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Shut up, Doug MacLean. How you ever were an NHL GM is beyond me.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:11 PM PDT reply actions

Kent, if you’d been around in the ‘80s, guys like him were a dime a dozen in the coaching and managerial ranks. He’s an anachronism now, to be sure,

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Why do broadcasters always employ the worst GM’s as analysts?

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Because good ones keep working in their leagues? Agreed, loud and wrong is always in style in the analyst’s chair. Matt Millen in the NFL is another shining example.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions

My suspicion is that loud is the criteria, right or wrong doesn’t matter much..

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice to see them get a break near the end there. I think they’ve played a pretty good game here. Phaneuf is driving me crazy, but the 1st line looks a lot better. Not dominant by any means, but significantly less putrid. Also, this “So, has anyone else noticed that the book on iggy the last couple years is basically, box him in on half boards, let him skate around, and dare him to make a pass?” is so incredibly accurate that it scares me.

by Subversive on Oct 8, 2009 8:15 PM PDT reply actions

yeah, Phaneuf is pulling the same stupid stuff. Not a bad game all around otherwise though.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah!

Synopsis: Smart play by Bourque, no shot, no problem! Passes to Kronwall and boom! goal.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 8:28 PM PDT reply actions

Wooooooo!. They were certainly all over them.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:28 PM PDT reply actions

yeah
beautiful goal, totally set up by that pick play springing borque.

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:28 PM PDT reply actions

nice play by dawes as well.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:28 PM PDT reply actions

Yup.

Ahem: I fully expect another Flames line to step forward tonight. I don’t think it’ll Jarome et al – they’re too far away from effectiveness to start kicking ass – but it’s probably about time for Langkow, Bourque and Dawes to have a good evening.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:28 PM PDT reply actions

What`s funny is that they were in the red re: Corsi after two. That shift turned it.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

ohhhhh kippy !!!!! :)

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:29 PM PDT reply actions

that was some of the best kipper play in the last couple years.

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:30 PM PDT reply actions

again dion and reggie right there doing not much

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:30 PM PDT reply actions

I hope so. Better hurt than playing like shit naturally.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

pretty quiet out in rexall currently it seems.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:31 PM PDT reply actions

What a positively terrible sequence on the forecheck by Iginla there.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:32 PM PDT reply actions

good hustle by boyder

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:33 PM PDT reply actions

Nice play by pardy to recognize that he could skate it out to C and wing it in.

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:33 PM PDT reply actions

That`s more like the fourth line we like.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:35 PM PDT reply actions

Is jokinen taking lessons from Iggy on how to try and bring a puck across a blue line?

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:35 PM PDT reply actions

i’ve only watched a period and a bit but i keep hearing “blocked by giordano.”

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:35 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, he’s made like 5 notable shot blocks.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

…“knocked down by giordano”

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

“Jokinen, through the middle…he is stopped”.

Uh-huh.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 8, 2009 8:35 PM PDT reply actions

i totally thought the same thing. he really likes that move and rarely makes it across….

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

isn’t it nice to see the fourth line come on the ice and not have to hold your breath for the entire shift ?

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:37 PM PDT reply actions

but is it really an improvement when the first line is on the ice that’s causing the breath holding

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Jokinen gave up on that puck pretty easily.

am i gonna be the first person to say that i’m not in love with this lineup ?

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:48 PM PDT reply actions

i’m not sure what it is, exactly…. but there’s definitely something missing.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions

probably…. it’s dawes. and not that i don’t like dawes, i just don’t trust him to be enough… also, i’ve never really liked jokinen, i’m doubtful that bourque can reclaim the ground he made last year and i’m not convinced moss is the real deal….. and i’m not even TALKING about the suffering of regehr and dion….

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

i just think that everybody looks a little lost. there’s a player on every line that i’m concerned about. and i’m suddenly unconvinced that brent’s gonna ever break up pairings that he wants to see succeed.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

it’s sad when the only guys i think are really working to their potential are nystrom, sjöström and prust.

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he wants to let the guys go for 5 or 6 games to get it figured out for himself… I think in the next couple games you might see some line changes coming into the games.

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That. Cory Sarich might help, too. At least he’d cut some people’s EV and PK minutes.

by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

So, here’s another anomaly?

The flames jersey numbers are all below 35 (current game rosters)

by d_p_h on Oct 8, 2009 9:17 PM PDT reply actions

Isn’t this an organizational thing? The Flames AHL numbers are all larger than the NHL numbers.

by R O on Oct 8, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

that’s actually not true (aside from pete vandermeer’s #75, really. i give the goalie #37 a pass). when they get called up they’re higher but that’s cause 1-35 are mostly taken anyways…..

by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Two explanations for that:
1.) I was talking out my ass.
2.) I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Now the Flames know how it feels to fight tooth and nail to win a game I thought Iginla after the Souray hit and fight with Moreau he woke up. His effort in the overtime shows what he can do when given the puck.

Robyn Regehr still looks out of place in my books hopefully a shake up his in his future, Kipper in the overtime on the penalty kill truly proved that the goaltender is your best penalty killer.

Now do we see McBackup tomorrow I would hope yes I think he has something to prove not only to the coaches but himself and the fans of the team.

What is truly comical about the Northern team is that they have a different guy who announces Oil Kings games, yet they made sure he sounds exactly like the Oilers PA announcer. Everything else about the WHL game presentation is just a smaller version of what the Oilers do as well. It’s actually rather pitiful that the Oilers aren’t even attempting to develop a separate identity for their junior team.
