Battle of Alberta 2.0 Gamethread
Calgary Flames at Edmonton Oilers, Oct 8, 2009 6:30 PM PDT
I don't often make predictions about game results, but if prodded about tonight I'd go with a Flames loss: there's been way too much go the Flames way in absence of actual performance for me to expect Calgary to win 4 in a row. If some certain highly paid players don't suddenly and inexplicably reverse what we've seen out of them so far, the club is bound to start seeing the bad side of scores. The 4th line and PP can only sustain things for so long.
Asked about the Oilers today, Derek replied:
Thus far, the Edmonton Oilers have a Jekyll & Hyde look, depending on the personnel on the ice. The J.F. Jacques experiment has not been a success, though Ryan Stone looks like he may be a bottom four-type forward for awhile. Steve Staios has looked very unsteady and as long as Renney continues to use he and Souray as the top pairing, Khabibulin is going to see some work. Dustin Penner has been the best Oiler thus far and Sam Gagner is beginning to look like a real NHL player. Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff continue to slump and one wonders how long Jacques will remain in Pat Quinn's good graces. The mood in Edmonton is improving, if only because Quinn's firewagon hockey brings excitement to the building every night.
I fully expect another Flames line to step forward tonight. I don't think it'll Jarome et al - they're too far away from effectiveness to start kicking ass - but it's probably about time for Langkow, Bourque and Dawes to have a good evening. Especially because, as pointed out in the pre-game, the match-ups should favor them over their counter-parts.

Go Flames
At least I get to watch this one on a TV :)
Man, this ATDHE is no good if the person streaming the game is changing the freaking channels! argh.
Do you have a Shaw Box, Lawrence? There’s a free preview of Centre Ice going on right now – check online for channels.

I actually am a no TV type. If I had one I would watch it all the time. I can’t say no to hockey though…and I live in Vancouver.
That’s ok! Because there’s also a free preview of GameCenter on NHL.com going on right now, and I bet you anything their feed is better than ATDHE.
by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Wait… wait… wait here, are you telling me that you don’t own a tv because if you did, you’d watch it nonstop? So you like purposely punish yourself? So… you own a computer… are you on that all of the time?
jus jks
It’s crazy I know. I’m not seeing a free preview of game cantre on NHL.com. Weird. I remember that last year.
I’ve searched the site and I guess it was just a 1-day preview last Saturday (with the 15 game schedule). Balls.

Hey Kent, nice work today on CBC, I lofted a few softballs in there for you to hit out of the park. Hopefully that stuff leads to more opportunities for ya.
I’m imagining you saying that like the Count from Sesame Street.

Jokinen’s job to get back as the high forward too. He’s some first line centre.
by R O on Oct 8, 2009 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions
i wasn’t watching. was it the “top line” plus regehr+phaneuf ?
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, but they’ve been better this game actually.
by R O on Oct 8, 2009 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions
That backhand pass is not Moss’ game. What the hell is it with top line these days? Completely sucking the essence from our players’ games.
I used the word vortex last game. It does have that feel.
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions
It isn’t the third wheel that is causing the problem.
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions
They’ve been ok but they’re doing too much stick work. Iginla and Moss are best battling along the boards and then driving to the net.

powerplay
nice, oilers manage to turn their first sustained zone pressure into a powerplay for the flames
Ethan Moreau really is good for a stupid penalty more often than not. That isn’t just an Oilgoisphere construct. But yeah, R O, they likely are.
Partiallly. Refs did miss a stick hold about 2/3 through that sequence which made it hard for Pardy to follow the puck.
by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions
But yeah the first 2/3 of that shift was horrible.
by R O on Oct 8, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Ok I haven’t checked TimeOnIce but will momentarily… I bet the Flames came out on top. It was a great period with a few brain farts.
At this time of year I prefer that to getting dominated but coming out with a lead.
And I bet you most of that was recouped in the shift from hell.

Anyone else notice Gio and Bouwmeester spending a ton of time in the Dzone?
I did, and the numbers say:
- JBo: -1 Corsi
- Giordano: -4 Corsi
I gotta figure Regehr is either still injured or he was slow in recovering, and isn’t fit enough/strong enough.
It’s not just that he’s slow and standing around a little. But he’s getting pushed around, and pushed down by guys who he wouldn’t’ve noticed last year. There were a couple plays on the far boards where he was just getting pushed around.
I hope it is a short term thing.
I shoulda looked a little closer at what he was eating in July when I ran into him at the Dairy Lane on 19th…
Too many dairy lane burgers maybe :)
Gotta wonder what’s going through the refs head when they let all sorts of stuff go all period and then call that…thing on Bouwmeester.
Yeah that was awful. The guy looked like he slipped on his skates. Meanwhile obvious (to me) stick holds are being let go.

The Oilers fans also think they are getting outplayed in their own zone.
This is the first time we’ve had a significant deficit. I expect lots of zone pressure going forward, hopefully to the end of the game this time.
I gotta admit, that was a nice goal by Visnovsky. Really smooth maneuver, something you’d expect from Lidstrom or something.
For those interested in following the shot counts along:

Questionable from the side but it did look like a trip from behind.

Not so bad, stick in the feet, and Souray was a bit vulnerable.
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Moreau’s kind of a douchebag.
Flames maintaining nice pressure this period. Oilers are collapsing onto the net.
unfortunately, i don’t think moreau landed a hit to get iginla really motivated, he’s probably more frustrated at how little he got vent in that fight
this is the second time today i’ve heard this comment….

If he gets the chances, Kent, it’ll do. It’s when a guy doesn’t that you worry.

hmph. i wonder why I like giordano ??!? ;)
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions
The first line is a fair way in the black as well.
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions
So, question for discussion… it seems that when iggy and Jokinen are on the ice together, they are just not on the same page, not moving the same way.
One throws a bad pass in the direction of the other, or try’s to stick handle around too many people while the other guy goes where he isn’t a support or outlet.
Is it Iggy not moving to space and Jokinen trying to get him the puck because he was brought here to feed and clothe iggy?
Is it Jokinen not putting the puck where it needs to go?
Is it Jokinen not playing hard nosed enough?
I don’t really know. I’ve never liked Jokinen’s passing or vision, but it also looks like both guys are trying to force plays. Kinda like a kid who trades for his favorite player in a video game, puts him on a line with his other favorite player, and then spends the entire next game trying to get both of them a goal every shift.
i would suggest that there’s been a series of guys who have trouble playing with iggy because of the pressure to have the captain perform: tanguay is a good example here….. too much time looking to pass and not enough time making the smart hockey play.
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions
WI: I agree about the problems with Iggy, but Jokinen has been particularly inept…
When you break them up, they both play substantially better on other lines. So, why is that combination so BAD
hey, don’t get me wrong. i hated the jokinen trade at the start, and i’m still not a fan.
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions
i don’t know if i agree… there was still a whole lotta passing when there should’ve been some shooting.
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions
(on the other hand, have i mentioned that i really like that giordano guy ??)
:)

Kent, if you’d been around in the ‘80s, guys like him were a dime a dozen in the coaching and managerial ranks. He’s an anachronism now, to be sure,
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Because good ones keep working in their leagues? Agreed, loud and wrong is always in style in the analyst’s chair. Matt Millen in the NFL is another shining example.
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Nice to see them get a break near the end there. I think they’ve played a pretty good game here. Phaneuf is driving me crazy, but the 1st line looks a lot better. Not dominant by any means, but significantly less putrid. Also, this “So, has anyone else noticed that the book on iggy the last couple years is basically, box him in on half boards, let him skate around, and dare him to make a pass?” is so incredibly accurate that it scares me.
Yup.
Ahem: I fully expect another Flames line to step forward tonight. I don’t think it’ll Jarome et al – they’re too far away from effectiveness to start kicking ass – but it’s probably about time for Langkow, Bourque and Dawes to have a good evening.
What`s funny is that they were in the red re: Corsi after two. That shift turned it.

I hope so. Better hurt than playing like shit naturally.
by R O on Oct 8, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions
i totally thought the same thing. he really likes that move and rarely makes it across….
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions
isn’t it nice to see the fourth line come on the ice and not have to hold your breath for the entire shift ?
looks like dion of last year: trying too hard and attempting to do it all himself. one word: simplify.

“Looks”? Is, amigo, is. At least at EV.

i’m not sure what it is, exactly…. but there’s definitely something missing.
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions
probably…. it’s dawes. and not that i don’t like dawes, i just don’t trust him to be enough… also, i’ve never really liked jokinen, i’m doubtful that bourque can reclaim the ground he made last year and i’m not convinced moss is the real deal….. and i’m not even TALKING about the suffering of regehr and dion….
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions
i just think that everybody looks a little lost. there’s a player on every line that i’m concerned about. and i’m suddenly unconvinced that brent’s gonna ever break up pairings that he wants to see succeed.
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions
it’s sad when the only guys i think are really working to their potential are nystrom, sjöström and prust.
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions
That. Cory Sarich might help, too. At least he’d cut some people’s EV and PK minutes.
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions
It’s a pure passing centre for iginla that is what is missing
by canadiancolts on Oct 8, 2009 8:50 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
David Moss is slowly becoming a victim of his linemates.
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.
The vortex of suck around Iggy and Joker is strong, Kent. I’m not sure anyone can overcome it.
by Robert Cleave on Oct 8, 2009 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions
Even though olli took that puck away from the oiler it was weak and that was an awful giveaway
by canadiancolts on Oct 8, 2009 8:53 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
I cant believe they give up 21 shots and take 27 and won’t come out with a victory. Backwards this team…

gio is the king of the weak/phantom penalty. the good news is that the opposition rarely scores on ‘em…. (but it’s also not usually in OT).

kinda dumb, but I got less problems in that situation, you are chasing from behind and sticking your stick in…. how is it different than giving a little shove or pull with the stick on the legs? stick it under “accidently on purpose” the ones that kill me are the ones where the guy is skating and has his stick not even in the play reaching, and dude steps on it.
But olli still sucks he has to help the dman there
by canadiancolts on Oct 8, 2009 9:05 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Cumulative shots to OT:
EV shots: 20-18 Calgary
EV Corsi: +1 Calgary
Can’t read too much into this, with only 3 minutes of 4 on 4.
Jokinen is worse fail suttee fail

They were way better I think. The kind of pressure they were generating would probably have resulted in another PP on another night.

Isn’t this an organizational thing? The Flames AHL numbers are all larger than the NHL numbers.
by R O on Oct 8, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions
that’s actually not true (aside from pete vandermeer’s #75, really. i give the goalie #37 a pass). when they get called up they’re higher but that’s cause 1-35 are mostly taken anyways…..
by walkinvisible on Oct 8, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Two explanations for that:
1.) I was talking out my ass.
2.) I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Now the Flames know how it feels to fight tooth and nail to win a game I thought Iginla after the Souray hit and fight with Moreau he woke up. His effort in the overtime shows what he can do when given the puck.
Robyn Regehr still looks out of place in my books hopefully a shake up his in his future, Kipper in the overtime on the penalty kill truly proved that the goaltender is your best penalty killer.
Now do we see McBackup tomorrow I would hope yes I think he has something to prove not only to the coaches but himself and the fans of the team.

Yeah that too
OOOOOOOOOOOOILERS GOAL SCORED BY NUMBER 83 ALLLLLLLLES HEMMMMMMMMMMSKY.
Home of the NHL's Best Defense.
What is truly comical about the Northern team is that they have a different guy who announces Oil Kings games, yet they made sure he sounds exactly like the Oilers PA announcer. Everything else about the WHL game presentation is just a smaller version of what the Oilers do as well. It’s actually rather pitiful that the Oilers aren’t even attempting to develop a separate identity for their junior team.
