Flames/Lightning Post-Game: The Sheltering of Jarome Iginla
For two periods in Tampa, the Flames were the better hockey team. They won the possession battle and were up by one on the score clock. However, they gave it all back in the third period when they succumbed to fatigue and the dreaded defensive shell (ie; playing "not to lose"). Who knows how different things would have been had Kotalik (ejection) and Bourque (injured by cheap shot) still been around. We'll never know, unfortunately.

Greatest Hockey Entrance Video?
Greatest entrance video in all of Hockey I think so. The University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks.
This is the official UAF Hockey Open from the 2009-2010 season for the Alaska Nanooks. This video was commissioned by the University of Alaska Fairbanks and runs at Carlson Center home games on their jumbotron.
It said I had to come up with 75 words so what are some of your favorite entrance videos and if the Flames were to change their entrance song from Spitfire by Prodigy what should they change it to?

Flames @ Lightning Gamethread
With the Red Wings falling to the Kings this afternoon, another Flames victory would put them 4 points up on 9th place Detroit and in a tie with the Colorado Avalanche for second in the division. The Canucks won again, but, really, the NW division crown is probably not in the cards anymore. Not unless something happens to Luongo in the last quarter of the season that is.
Other stuff to watch for:
- The Lightning are a very middling team at ES. No regular skater has a positive corsi rate and they regularly feed their bottom-enders to the wolves so their big guns have a better chance to score. As Bob notes, they're only really deadly on the PP.
- Speaking of which, Cory Sarich is positioned to be the scapegoat for this contest. The proud owner of the Flames worst penalties taken and drawn ratio has been a disaster recently. With him potentially facing the likes of St.Louis, Lecavalier or Downie at ES, another couple of trips to the box are rather probable.
- Although the need for more firepower up front has taken a backseat recently, Alex Tanguay may still remain on the Flames radar as a deadline rental. He had a rotten start to the season, but has turned things around a bit recently (although word is he's not very popular with Rick Tocchet).
Comments a go-go.

Flames @ Panthers Post-Game - Reboot Working?
We're only two games into the reboot, but there are certainly a number of positive signs for Flames fans. Firstly, the shot differential has been through the roof thus far. Calgary out-shot the hapless Panthers 40-13 last night (insert caveat about the lousiness of the opposition here). Also on the rebound is the power play, which scored both goals, generated 9 of the Flames 18 scoring chances and 11 of the Flames shots. That's a drastic reversal from the rest of the season; up until recently the PP was so inept most fans would ruefully declare "decline" whenever a call went in the Flames favor.

Flames @ Panthers Gamethread
This evening we get to see if the outburst versus the Hurricanes was an aberration born of adrenaline and a lesser opponent or if we're into something more permanent here. Of course, FLA is arguably a worse team, but you know what I mean.
If this feels like the start of a new season to you, there's a reason - the Flames turned over more of their roster in the last week than they did during the off-season. Seriously. In the summer, they added Dawes, Sjostrom, McGrattan and Bouwmeester. Since last Saturday, they've added Hagman, White, Stajan, Higgins, Kotalik, Mayers and Backlund (sort of). As a result, most of the stats and work we've put into tracking the club's performance up until this point can basically be thrown out the window.
Stuff to consider:
- With that last sentence in mind, the Flames apparently have less than a 50% chance of making the post-season according to Sports Club Stats. Anyone still wondering what spurred Sutter to take such a radical route need only glance at the linked graph for the answer.
- The Panthers have some underappreciated players. Stephen Weiss was mentioned by Bob below, but for my money the best of the bunch may be David Booth. He scores at a high rate at ES, can take on tough competition and he moves the puck forward at a high rate (depsite the fact his team is terrible at it).
- Florida has lackluster depth after their name guys however. The bottom end of their roster gets killed on a nightly basis in terms of possession and that's likely where the Flames will have to make hay tonight. Will the injection of so many players, the Flames now have a fairly strong bottom 6.
Let's get it on.

Joker's Insight Into Phaneuf's Trade
"The biggest thing is, (former Flame Dion Phaneuf) wasn't accepted by the Calgary fans, even though he was once a Norris Trophy candidate." - Olli Jokinen

Flames Game Day: Days of the New
Now that all the nonsense regarding whales has faded, the Flames can get down to the business of actually winning games. Wednesday was an acceptable start, even noting the quality of the competition, but there are still a few matters that this iteration need to work through before they get into the more difficult portion of the schedule that awaits after the Olympics. With that in mind, it isn't a bad time for the team to get out on the road, where hockey is the only concern. Tonight, that road trip begins in South Florida, where they'll face a team that rides their goaltender like few others in the league.
